Dan, do you go back and shape the underside of the lid at all, or is it just flat inside? Love your stuff by the way. I'm a beginner but you've inspired me to do some nice little pierced candle holders and bowls.
May i ask why it is that you don't throw a small cylinder and cut it in half to make the two lugs instead of pulling them, I find it to be much quicker and symmetrical. Oh and you have a great style and your passion for this art is obvious, i love it!
thank you for posting the wonderful videos. I have learned so much from you. I am curious about your "everthing" tool. You know the one you use for everything. Where can i purchase one. I love it!
Dan... You have great fingers for pottery! Long and lean! Went to the website and loved the humor. You all must laugh a lot at work! Thank you for sharing your techniques with us beginners. -Mickey (Michigan, USA)
Thank you for putting up such videos, it is from you that i learn how to throw just by observing and applying it in class. i have a couple of questions: what type of wheel are you using (the brand, etc.)? and what is that darker clay you use to paint at the end? thank again for posting these videos.
You have given my a lot of good tips and i thank you for that. As far as clay for oven ware, can you use any clay for that? i have a cone 4-6, will that work? thanks, todd
@HarmlessBystander I usually have heard about stoneware as being highly tolerant. Midrange like 4-6 would, to my knowledge be stoneware. Still depends on the clay body.
@jaartj3 cone 6 is all that i use and so far i have no complaints. after all its being fired in a 1500 F kiln i think the hottest ive ever seen an oven is around 600
@jaartj3 I wouldn't go any lower than ^6 unless you're using micaceous clay -- the problem isn't the oven temp as much as the possibility of thermal shock as it goes from cooler to hotter temps or vice versa. When in doubt, do some test dishes and try them out at home. Also try googling 'pampered chef stoneware care' for care instructions. :)
Excellent work! You gave me some great tips, especially for the lugs. Your tools are very different than mine, I'd love to see them displayed some time.
I'm a beginning ceramics student in college. I find your videos inspiring and very fun to watch. What is it that you're brushing on the pot? Is it a stain? Not the slip, but the two dark lines.
Why don't you score your clay?

Where did you get that trimming tool? Great Pot!

beautiful demo. Thanks!
One question:
What about hollowing-out the underside of the lid, or the bottom of the pot?
How are these supported (especially the lid) in order to scoop clay out for a lighter, hollow, surface?

How did you know the lid would fit so well?

Great video!
Do you trim the bottom of the pot and the bottom of the lid as well?
Also what is the actual movement you make when you form the lip for the lid?

@jaartj3 to be honest as a cooker oven is only max 250c I would think you'd be OK as your kiln would be a lot hotter than the oven would get.
Cheers,Dan

@youdanxxx Thermal shock tolerance can be a problem regardless. Some bigger clay manufacturers list this sort of thing in their product details.

Another excellent demo, how-to video. I can see making cookie jars with the same shape just not adding the lugs.. One more for me to try...
