Digital cameras will pick up IR, but most of them have an IR-cut filter to prevent it from being seen. You'll need to remove it or use a camera that doesn't have one. Removing it from a webcam is pretty easy, but it is a pain to remove from a regular camera without also replacing it with some glass of equal thickness.
These IR leds do woke quite well for a flashlight, Look at the light I built with this led.

ebay is a simple place to get these leds, all digital cameras should,
and if you use a pulse supply it wont.
