STOP DOWNLOADING! Bands deserve to get paid. It doesn't make them "sellouts"..If your boss doesn't pay you for your job at Mc d's you are getting ripped off like downloaders rip off bands.Cool bands cant recoup costs from their labels and are getting dropped. We will be stuck with GaGa and Beiber cuz 12 yr olds pay for music more than "indie" kids do. It is also compromising the state of the internet. It's a human problem not a music problem.Give something back to music and the net.
I wasn't going to comment, but the "all music can be danced to" comment made it so I had to. I don't think people should think of this as music so much as art (using a musical medium, perhaps). You're not supposed to absorb it in 2 play-throughs, just like any good piece of art takes more than just a few seconds to really take in (except maybe predictable, obviously "good" art as well).
Now I'm not the biggest fan of this album or anything, but damn..art does not have to equal groovin', ya know?
Im going to be honest i'm pretty open minded with music and enjoy many different types of it but i just dont see how this is music. I can't imagine why anyone would want to listen to this.
the problem i have noise you cant dance to it. all music i ever heard you can dance. you some interesting points on the genre. like hearing different sounds of instuments.
I've listened to a lot of noise over the last 10 years. Nothing new here. Yellow Swans, Gang Wizard, Lightning Bolt, Neon Hunk, Yip Yip, Beast Men, The Skaters, Vodka Soap, Acid Eagle, Double Leopards, BASTARD NOISE...etc. These are great bands. Red Horse does not impress. Check out James Ferraro's (The Skates) solo work. It really opened my eyes.
And? I think this band sucks. So I listed the ones I like to give a basis for my comparison. It's better than leaving a vacant drive-by comment like "this shit sux d00d" or "namedrop namedrop namedrop".
I really enjoyed the first track off of this album. To say I received a psychedelic effect from the percussion on it is an incredible understatement. On first listen, it was really harsh and shrill to listen to, but the longer I went into the track, the chimes had an almost calming effect. I will check out the other parts tomorrow.
@oxfordye I listen to stuff like Emancipator and The Flashbulb, that's pretty enjoyable. But this...it just sounds like chaotic screeching noises. It does sound pretty nice at times, but half of the time some of the instruments used are unbearable to listen to.
Noise and Free Improv often aim to make a "heavy" atmosphere, and that can definitely include harsh sounds. It just depends how well-organized the sounds are that change its effect on the listener. You kind of have to fall into a trance when listening to this type of music.
You should track review the lastest Charlift song, "Met Before", you haven't reviewed any 'snyth pop' in a while, and I thought this song might be a good one. As far as experimental music goes, I think Red Horse have gone to the limits of this genre, giving listeners something to think about although I don't quite know what that is...but I'll give it more listens.
Have you changed your mind about the little Women LP from last year? I enjoyed this Red Horse album but I did feel it was like a diet version of Merzbows 1930.
I've never really listened to or enjoyed much noise music, but I quite enjoyed this music.I also like the simple, minimalistic cover; I think it'd make a nice addition to my growing vinyl collection!
Not recommending anything to review, rather, one not to review: Lupe Fiasco's Friend of the People. It's awful. Don't waste time and whatever the fuck bandwith is by filming and posting a review of a terrible mixtape.
@thejailer718 TRANSLATION: all music that I do not personally like is overrated because I only like good things and if I don't like it, it is because it is crap and people who do like it are idiots.
Hey Anthony, how about a review of Vildhjarta's new album--Masstaden. Are you familiar with "djent"? In fact, you could do a video about the djent sound. I would call it a subgenre of metal that is gaining popularity.
Very industrial, I found. I used to be into noise (Andrew WK's Ancient Art of Boar album TORR, for example) but I seem to have moved past it. I can appreciate it, but it doesn't grab me as much as it used to.
the more free your form of artistic expression seems, the more confining the set of rules you apply to it. more directions mean more dead ends. but when you get the shit right, it's delectable.
Anthony, I've given a try almost every metal album you've reviewed, I've even learned to enjoy Death Grips, but please, don't you EVER do this to me again. K?
this is..........NOT art, and a huge waste of effort. "would you like fries with that/" should have made the "album" as it is a real part of the future of these two guys. There's the short truth of it, like it or not.
I'm curious to know your opinion on any of Charlotte Gainsbourg's recent tracks—White Telephone, Terrible Angels, or Paradisco, etc. I believe they'll be released on an album soon enough, one that was also produced by Beck. :)
Anthony!!! here is some Dutch music I recommend: Blaudzun and Pete Philly. You give me good music, I give you! Just listen to a few songs, They are 2 amazing artists. Oh and 'de jeugd van tegenwoordig' is something you might like aswell!
i thought Birchville Cat Motel was "out there" until now, to say this is "all over the place" is not accurate at all. i loved it... most noise or free jazz albums just dont have the textures and the dynamics this album has and when i say free jazz i mean Sun Ra or that weird Pat Metheny/Derek Bailey "the sign of 4" album. This is an amazing album which to me blurs the line between free jazz, noise and electracoustic composition. i´d give it a strong 8. bad Fantano! baaad Fantano! :)
