3 3 3 Paul Revere & The Raiders! I remember The Hollywood Palace coming on Saturday evenings & got all my dumb weekend homework done before ithe show came on. We didn't have color TV until 1968 but it was no big whoop since I watched PR&Rs on WTAI in B&W anyway.
@psychkoala Under the Beatles? I don't think so! The Beatles music did not age well IMO. The Raiders music was ahead of its time and sounds good to my ears today along with Animals, kinks, Zombies.
I remember this performance. I saw them at my rich uncles house. You know... The Raiders in color! Up to that point I would only see them in Black and White on the Show "Where the Action Is"
the Raiders are cool, but this might have been after the time of the Hollywood Palace super "act-card presenter girl" Raquel Welch.---or does anyone remember that?
At 17 I saw the Raiders live at the Oakland Auditorium in the 1960s, and it was a show that brought the house down; much better than would even be apparent by these fine clips. As we went in from the hallway, Sonny and Cher were to our left smoking a cigarette. And as might be expected, young Cher looked quite cheeky and bored, letting her eyes wander all over my trousers.
I heard you Fang at the Winnipeg Arena. THe Raiders were my favoite band next to the Beatles and Stones. My older cousin and his girlfreind took me because I was only about 10 or 12 yrs old. You guys were about good clean fun. I watched you on Where The Action Is everyday !
PP&R's is the very first big concert i ever saw. i was in 8th grade. interestingly i dont remember the guitar and bass guys doing their "steps" like i see in all these videos now. loved this band way back in the day!!!
There are quite a few southern California bands, as an example of a region, who played clubs, made a number of recordings, but never really broke on a larger scale. Rick's Ripcords, The Ban-Shees, The Girly Girls, The Desotos, Quentin Sand and the Sandpile, The Olivers, Primal Dream, The Sun Teens, Earth Tones, Camilla Rush and The Sorority, Beck'N'Call, The Surf 6, Frank Hester and the Futures, among others. Good performances, just didn't go national, let alone international.
I am a HUGE fan of this group and was wondering if there were ANY actual LIVE performances on you tube without lipsync on any T.V. shows from the sixties?
Thanks to Fang and everyone for some great radio tracks. When I started in '68 your catalog was "then" - and it sounded great on a loud top-40 AM station like the one(s) I worked at. Coming out of a strong station ID with the first couple of keys on "Just like me" is pure radio power. Cool to think about it again...
Phil and Mark still tour, not together though. They are still belting them out, sounding and looking good. It would be great to get these two R&R Legends to tour together. The Great Airplane Strike is one of my favorites. It was nice that the guitar players got to stay out front for part of the song.
I just got to say this was THE BEST band ever. I had all their albums and was totally in love with Fang and Mark, (still am, lol). Their music sounds as good today as it did in the 60's. I was lucky enough to see them live when I was 12 or 13 and they were awesome!
@patinala where did you see paul revere and the raiders live? i was 13 in '69 when "let me" came out and of course i loved that one! lol. i remember standing on the track at school in a 440 relay for my very first time, i was the second man, and as i stood there waiting and talking to my apponent (it was his first race too and we were very nervous) but off in the distance was the sound of paul revere and the raiders and 'let me' and oh yah, when that batton hit my hand, i left him in the dust!!
These guys were the GREATEST!!! When you talk about '60s American Rock Bands, these guys are at the top of our list!!! I've seen them in concert 3 times now and it was ALWAYS A GAS!!!!
Don't know if Fang is still monitoring the comments on this clip, but if so - why, when the Raiders were considered one of the premier live acts of the 60's, did you never perform live on tv. I have a 3 dvd set of your appearances and the closest the band ever came to anything live was an occasional open mic for Mark and the Jack Benny show, where the band recorded a new track for "Him Or Me" but still mimed to it while Mark sang live. I know you were gone by then but am still curious.
@RP50 wow ,you have a 3 dvd set , i did,nt know that there was so much paul revere material out there .
is there any chance of me buying a copy of your discs as i am a really big fan of them ,and would love to see all of their appearances from the 60s onwards , cheers ,jimmy : )
I love that guitar walk down lick, kind of like these boots are made for walking except Nancy's was on the bass guitar, same year 1966, I was 10 years old, these guys are the reason I play guitar, every garage band in southern Ca love to try and play these tunes they were part of the music revolution.
Brian....glad you posted this...I've always liked your dad and the group....great to be able to listen to their music today...I was around when it was first popular and still like it.
A great band, but sadly, they didn't play there own instruments on many (not all) of the songs they recorded. Much like the Beach Boys, they had to learn the songs to play them live, but on record, it was usually studio cats.
@karmices You're sadly mistaken with your facts. I'm the original bass player for the Raiders, and I played my instrument on all the recordings during my time period with the group. As a band, we sat in the studio with our producer, Terry Melcher, & worked out the basic track. This was OUR music, OUR performance, with OUR own hands, and OUR own souls. Comments like this make me sick. I was an eyewitness, I know the truth. After the original band split in '67, it's anyone's guess. -Fang
@SonicWheelRecords I was told by a member who shall remain nameless, that the "classic" line-up from 1965-1967 broke up for a few reasons, one of which was the Raiders didn't play on many of the tracks they recorded. Another reason was the teen appearance they had instead of the more serious rock that was coming out in late '66-'67.
@SonicWheelRecords To Fang - Should have replied here first but to reiterate what I wrote above, why did the Raiders, who had a reputation as one of the great live bands, never play live on TV? I know a lot of shows only allowed lip synching but others were live some or most of the time (Sullivan, Shindig, Hullabaloo occasionally and some others.) I have 3 dvd's full of Raiders performances and there is not one that is live. Plus I've read that Paul didn't play on much of the Melcher stuff.

Lost many albums through the years but somehow I kept a close eye on this one. Fang, you are one of the all time greats. Just ask my sister who had your pics plastered on her bedroom wall.
@SonicWheelRecords It's great to hear Paul Revere And the Raiders on youtube. My older brother who grew up in the 60's and was 15 years older than I, used to let me listen to this song all the time. At 45 years of age now I still DIG it!
@SonicWheelRecords Wow, Fang! I loved you guys from fourth grade or so - you were my favorite band...my brother worked at a temp agency sometime probably early nineties or so, and Drake Levin called in with some business...don't know details. Sorry to hear he died. That said, I did enjoy the Raiders with Harpo in the band, but lost interest as they started replacing more of you. Good to see you're still playing (checked out Sonic Wheel).
@SonicWheelRecords just found the song "melody to an unknown girl" what a beautiful song. it never fails to smooth me. i remered this song for all these years and could not get it out of my mind. i described it on a different song and someone recognized what i was talking about and gave me the name. blew my mind when i heard the raiders did it. forgotten all the good stuff you all did. congraulations.
@karmices should have a clue before making "factual" statements. Clearly you have been outed by Fang and it takes only a cursory search for Beach Boys to realize how good of a studio and live band they were. Brian has stated that he shared the arrangements and worked them out with the band before entering the studio. Both bands may have had other studio musicians participate but it was their music and their playing that carried the water.
@lonbozarth Thank you for agreeing with me. Your last sentence goes along with what I said. " Both bands may have had other studio musicians participate but it was their music and their playing that carried the water" Thanks again!
They made good music but who on earth made the guitarists prance around like that. The performances I have seen just don't go with the music. Were they different when playing live concerts?
@trevor40 It's all down to personal perspective. I respect your opinion but I disagree with it. To you, that's entertainment. To me, that was total disappointment. I expected an R & B / rock band, something like 'The Yardbirds' or 'The Who'. What I found was a 'Disney' style boy band. I have enjoyed their records for 40 odd years but they are seriously at odds with the televised performances. I shall stick to the records and others can watch the videos as they bring pleasure to many.
They were considered one of the best live acts of the 60's and in over 750 tv appearances they never performed live once (that I have been able to find - live vocals over backing tracks notwithstanding.) While there was a ton of lip synching in the 60's, plenty of groups played live also. I'd love to know why the Raiders weren't one of them..
I remember seeing this on Hollywood Palace back when I was a little boy. I could never get enough of these guys, I was a big Elvis and Beatle fan but these guys had a different look and sound that really appealed to a lot of us growing up in the mid 60's.
Thanks so much for posting this. Ahhhhhh Mark Lindsay was and always be the most beautiful man in the world with his FANTASTIC VOICE...love ya Mark, for 42 yrs since I was 12 yr old.
Paul Revere and the Raiders were terrific! Great music from a bygone era. And great to see the late-great Ray Bolger doing the introductions for this classic '60's and early '70's musical act! Although Ray Bolger did not make many films, any time I catch him on an obscure old movie (other than his well-known turn as the scarecrow from "The Wizard of Oz"), he never fails to enliven the proceedings!! Thanks for this wonderful post!
I was almost the perfect age when this great music was at the top of the charts. I really miss the variety shows that showcased this kind of great talent. Rock 'n' Roll, where, oh, where have you gone?
Note the guitars are NOT plugged in? They didn't have wireless technology back then. haha Can you say Lip Syncing? hehe Gotta Love It!! They still were a fun band!
@JohnnyRocker4U all bands lips synced,,back then even on sullivan
the mamas and papas did... watch hulla baloo it was common....not cool by standards nowadays..but their equipment was not great and fans were screaming.... and there was a product to sell..God Bless the 45's!!! this band was still real good and very underated
i really like this band and wonder why they don't seem to be mocked for their obvious show biz.people are usually so cynical and sarcastic about stuff like this.it's nice for a change.i just wish ''just like me'' was about 20 minutes longer.
Paul Revere & the Raiders were the greatest American band. Shame on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for their exclusion. They set the standard for others to emulate.
@chookiechooks It is my understanding that Drake actually played on every hit single, up to & including "I Had A Dream." Seems to me I read somewhere that Harpo (Jim Valley) did, in fact, play rhythm guitar on this one, however. I know Ry Cooder also did some session work with them around this period. I believe he plays slide on Ups & Downs.
The Raiders were doing "moves" like this & more, long before F&TD! Not only that but they are probably the most underrated of all fo the U.S. rock bands out of the '60s. They really should be in the Hall Of Fame. Most definitely my favorite American rock band of all time! Would love to see Mark, Paul, Phil & Jim get back together, perhaps with Keith & Joe, Jr.! Drake & Smitty R.I.P.
@randywdc : I think the RHOF views PR & the Raiders as a novelty act and not a serious band. What with the dance moves and Revolutionary War costumes.Too bad. They were a fine band with good songs that sound just as good today as they did in the 60`s.....
They didn't 'go over' very well in the U.K. and, weren't played over there because of their Revolunary Theme, but Paul Revere & The Raiders were America's answer to the "British Rock Invasion" of the 60's !
This is what music is albout, late 50s 60's and 70s and some 80's. Music now is crap, rap sh^t is not music. none of rappers can sing a note. I HATE what you hear on the radio now adays. You Tube, Thank you for giving us what music is really like.
Don't get me wrong, I love The Raiders and the songs, this one is one of my favorite songs by anyone! But this was a result of trying keeping up the Rolling Stones, which isn't a bad thing.
I got a personal lesson from Jim "Harpo" Valley back in '03---just doin' the Raider shuffle. :) These guys are/were all great guys. Love 'em. Yes, Mark is still out there, sounding and looking as good as ever! Check out his website and pick up some of his newer projects, including " Video Dreams", "Looking for Shelter", and "Rick's Cafe"---yes, the "Sioux" in the liner notes, who helped with the playlist, is moi...:)
Love the guitarist choreography...Notice how they all look like they are enjoying themselves. Why is it so many contemporary groups look like they would rather be anywhere else but where they are? Not knocking the music necessarily but wondering why so much angst....
guitar sounds sick, unfortunately the groups getup doesn't go with their music but theres plenty of 60's fashion mistakes in music so i can forgive them
underrated is the word. i grew up listening to these guys and you couldn't turn on a radio without hearing their music. they had one of the best lead singers in the business in mark lindsay.
I've seen Mark twice in concert recently -he puts on a great show and is still very fit! Have also talked to him many times on the phone> via his radio show. He's a sweetheart!
pumper's comment is classic. If they put groups like the Hollies on R&R HF then Mark Lindsay should have been inducted based on his brief solo career.
The Great Airplane Strike is but one of many examples of why Paul Revere And The Raiders were one of the ten best bands of the twentieth century. One of the few examples of the Jim Valley era Raiders in Action (pun intended). God bless them!
May I add... Vox a music equipment company equipted this band with music gear and pushed this band and that ditinct sound you hear is their talant playing thru that VOX gear.. A real british sound... I love this band!
I loved this song. It was different. Back then all the songs had two verses, a chorus, and a third verse. This song didn't. And, as always, the guitar player came up with a riff that was new and different.
This morning, World Class Guitarist, Hit Maker & Pop Star Drake Levin passed away at his home in San Francisco with his beloved wife Sandra holding him. Drake was 62 years of age.
It's important for me to express how many of you touched Drake's life, from the past, down to this very last moment.
This is the great , legendary Raiders line-up that was one of the truly great live acts of the Sixties. If you never saw them live, in concert, I feel sorry for you--one of a kind showmen. They must be put in the Hall of Fame now--no more effen around.
You're forgetting about the period (1961-1964) before they hooked up with Terry Melcher.....there may have been a lack of top 40 singles during that period, but their stage show was far from being "cheesy." They were a tough, R&B-infused rock band.
I grew up w/ these guys on "Where The Action Is" so many wonderful years ago. Mark was one of the greatest lead singers that ever held a microphone...they DONT make 'em like that anymore. God Bless these guys for all the memories they gave us kids of the 60's. This stuff is priceless to us.
I couldn't agree with you more about Mark!! Did you know he's touring with the Teen Idol Tour (Peter Noone & Micky Dolenz) starting May 8th in Westbury, NY? I will be there. Haven't seen him in 38 years!! :-)
wish I was there:) Now if only we could get Mike Nesmith, Davy Jones and Peter Tork (whose recovering from cancer surgery, btw--god bless ya Pete)together again it would be the coolest deja vu I could think of !!
Yeah, PaulRevereRidesAgain. I caught em all, fortunately. I had a feeling they they wouldn't last that long. You can get those on a DVD that sells on ebay from time to time.
That person "TuneToThe6T's"or something like that ,should' ve spelled them a bit different, that way it takes longer to find them for copyright reasons. like...Kic ks, or Pa ulRev ereand TheR aiders ☺
I remember watching PR&R on a Saturday morning show...I think it was "Where the Action Is", IIRC.

They made good music but who on earth made the guitarists prance around like that. The performances I have seen just don't go with the music. Were they different when playing live concerts?

Its called showmanship, entertainment, cant you tell by the Smiles on their faces :-)
trevor40 1 year ago 2
@trevor40 It's all down to personal perspective. I respect your opinion but I disagree with it. To you, that's entertainment. To me, that was total disappointment. I expected an R & B / rock band, something like 'The Yardbirds' or 'The Who'. What I found was a 'Disney' style boy band. I have enjoyed their records for 40 odd years but they are seriously at odds with the televised performances. I shall stick to the records and others can watch the videos as they bring pleasure to many.
hawkmoon03111951 1 year ago
Totally agree with you..did they even play their instruments? I know Mark could sing.
TheBluesguy62154 1 year ago
They were considered one of the best live acts of the 60's and in over 750 tv appearances they never performed live once (that I have been able to find - live vocals over backing tracks notwithstanding.) While there was a ton of lip synching in the 60's, plenty of groups played live also. I'd love to know why the Raiders weren't one of them..

I remember seeing this on Hollywood Palace back when I was a little boy. I could never get enough of these guys, I was a big Elvis and Beatle fan but these guys had a different look and sound that really appealed to a lot of us growing up in the mid 60's.

Extra points for having Ray Bolger! Great clip ...
peepff 1 year ago
Paul Revere and the Raiders were terrific! Great music from a bygone era. And great to see the late-great Ray Bolger doing the introductions for this classic '60's and early '70's musical act! Although Ray Bolger did not make many films, any time I catch him on an obscure old movie (other than his well-known turn as the scarecrow from "The Wizard of Oz"), he never fails to enliven the proceedings!! Thanks for this wonderful post!

Love those LEGS. Very hot. Fang was such a cutie, too.
chookiechooks 1 year ago
@chookiechooks It is my understanding that Drake actually played on every hit single, up to & including "I Had A Dream." Seems to me I read somewhere that Harpo (Jim Valley) did, in fact, play rhythm guitar on this one, however. I know Ry Cooder also did some session work with them around this period. I believe he plays slide on Ups & Downs.
randywdc 1 year ago
The Raiders were doing "moves" like this & more, long before F&TD! Not only that but they are probably the most underrated of all fo the U.S. rock bands out of the '60s. They really should be in the Hall Of Fame. Most definitely my favorite American rock band of all time! Would love to see Mark, Paul, Phil & Jim get back together, perhaps with Keith & Joe, Jr.! Drake & Smitty R.I.P.
randywdc 1 year ago
@randywdc : I think the RHOF views PR & the Raiders as a novelty act and not a serious band. What with the dance moves and Revolutionary War costumes.Too bad. They were a fine band with good songs that sound just as good today as they did in the 60`s.....
whyyeseyec 1 year ago 2
@randywdc
They didn't 'go over' very well in the U.K. and, weren't played over there because of their Revolunary Theme, but Paul Revere & The Raiders were America's answer to the "British Rock Invasion" of the 60's !

We have the Kingsmen, Paul Revere & the Raiders, the Sonics for starters.

Pacific Northwest had some great garage bands (don't forget The Wailers) - but so did the rest of the USA:
NORTHEAST: Blues Magoos, Barry & The Remains, Velvet underground. SOUTHEAST: Sam The Sham & The Pharoahs, The Gentrys.
MIDWEST : Shadows of Knight, Music Explosion, Cryan Shames, The Castaways.
SOUTHWEST: 13th Floor Elevators, Bubble Puppy.
CALIFORNIA: The Standells, The Leaves, The Seeds, Chocolate Watchband, Music Machine, Syndicate of Sound, Count Five...

I know what you mean Lee ,
But in The Beatles case, it was
"cheesyness"backed by charisma.
The Raiders were more or less a
"manufactured band like The Monkees.
After '66 except Lindsay, none of these dudes played on their own albums. ,
It was all about Terry Melcher and his merry band of ace session men.
Don't get me wrong.I'm a fan, I bought
their singles in the 6T's.
PAULLONDEN 2 years ago
You're forgetting about the period (1961-1964) before they hooked up with Terry Melcher.....there may have been a lack of top 40 singles during that period, but their stage show was far from being "cheesy." They were a tough, R&B-infused rock band.
