personally the video just stinks! an original swamp of Sales to some other great video that does not exist. - Over stating all me me me - I did I did I did - Its done its done
Awesome video. This is very helpful for me especially since I'm taking Data Structures. My professor always reminds us that Data Structures is the heart and soul of Computer Science. If you suck at Data Structures.. man.. you are basically useless, especially since everything else in the major builds on top of Data Structures ;D.
You hit the key point at about 00:42: If the design stinks, the software will stink. I think Agile is loved by people who want to avoid design and just play on the computers.
@dying2l actually software is very large in terms of what is successful to pursue in what you wish to develop from databases to mobile to games to legacy or even network management software
@mrbit10 Thank you What kind of what can I expect fresh out of college? I want to develop games but I'm guessing I will have to work on smaller projects first and build my resume?
This guy does not have enough background to even have a valid opinion on software engineering. Someone like me, who has been a principal engineer for 25+ years, worked at Adobe (I worked on Photoshop in 99), IBM, and did about 20 other commercial applications and games. Yeah I am talking shrinkwrapped commercial software. This mrbit clown hasn't done anything.
Design is very important, but don't listen to someone who never did a single commercial app for advice.
well thanks for your input, however, someone of your stated experience would hardly come off as you did in comment, but if I must, I have worked with/for in part or whole: ADP,AIG, Xerox, Microsoft, Continental Airlines, American General LIfe to name a few, but the real point is that the video is not about being a pissing match nor was it about how great I am, I was asked to give a bit of my experience & I did it as respectfully & educationally as I saw fit. Nonetheless, thanks for your input.
FrankRizzo, stating that someone's wrong and simply stating that they're wrong isn't doing much for your credibility. Say what you think is wrong and people might consider your opinion to have some foundation.
I don't have to prove anything, I am not the one standing on my soapbox spewing a bunch of bullshit without proving my background. You need to prove yourself, not the other way around.
Now now Frank, I'm surprised that any company would of accepted you amongst their ranks with such an angry and over-inflated ego.
Either way; I never said you had to prove anything I said people would understand your comment better if it had any foundation; tell him what's wrong with the video.
Simply boasting that you've got 25 years experience without saying what's wrong only makes you look like a silly billy. Are you a silly billy Frank?
Thanks for the vid'. I'm looking to go into software design after I graduate. I'm homeschooled and therefore don't have any teachers to teach me C#, it's been pretty slow learning it myself. Is there a book or tutorial you'd suggest?
Yep, design is the most important. When ever I have asked a SW ENG, to change certain things I get the reply with this is beyond the scope of the design. Code can be changed very easily, but if it requires a design change, well, it might as well be a new project. I deal with systems that have limited resources (slow processor speeds, and limited foot print), and design is critical, from the beginning. Once a project is kicked off, the design and most of the feathers have to be layed out.
Software design is intense. I'm going to school for Computer Information Systems, and just started my first C# class. WOW! What a world in it's own. Great video :)
dude, we don't want you telling us your CV. You're a great programmer, we get it. Tell us some tips about how to actually implement a good software design, what would be a bad one, etc.
lmao!!! actually when i am tired as I was in this vid it will happen, also when i drink too much :P the cool thing is that i have depth perception of which i thank my eye doctor, most cross-eyed ppl never gain depth perception.
@mrbit10 The light is good (hopping you don't hurt your eyes with a lamp as does Adrian :-/) But I maintain you'd better be farther and zoom in, the upper right insert is clean (still I don't think yellow is a good color, better of a transparent white with solid white borders)
and maybe add some light in the back (not from in front of you but like ambilight) This setup looks like "Tells from the crypt" :P
But It sure have the advantage to get better exposure of your LCDscreens
Thanks MrBit, I requested this video just over a week ago. Great video with some nice anecdotes. I am starting my first real big software design project for a real client in a couple of weeks for my university course and I can't wait to get stuck in! You should come lecture some of our modules rather than some of the old fuddy-duddy professors we have lol

Wow you made off the shelf software. How's that make you're work any better?

It shows my 25 year background and proves I know what the fuck I am doing, kid.

And how does that make what you did was any better because of its presentation, man.

that could get real boring but what specifically did you have in mind? DB design, GUI, OOP inheritance?

how do you like the new style in HD, i hated the yellowish/orangish light captured in last years vid, i prefer the dark but with controlled lighting.
