It might be splitting hairs, but "Death Rock" probably grew out of West Coast punk -- 45 Grave, Christian Death, TSOL, faster, simpler, more quitar. See the "Hell Comes to Your House" comp (1981). Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi Is Dead" (1979), is widely regarded as the launch of "Goth" as a genre...dark, artsy, atmospheric post punk (often European) bands that could play their instruments and fancied themselves more "sophisticated." Many bands cross genres.
It's retarded how people that were not even born when the dispute betwen Rozz & Valor began and have nothing to do with either of the musicians personally are taking sides. What I do know is that I had a great time partying with Valor after a CD show in 2008 and he was down to earth and very courteous. In the end everything that counts is what it's pressed on the records. Everything else is myth and subjective speculations of no value for the consumer.
Deathrock Better orginaly know as batcave if you are goth you would know this you would also know why it was called batcave i personaly hate the term deathrock stick to it original roots it sounds and feels a lot better.
Valor wasn't that bad--he made some good music, SOME. CD under him was a different beast than with ROzz. I agree Valor should've changed the name cause by not doing so he was pretty much riding on coattails. Saw CD twice, both times with Valor--1st time was a great show, 2nd time he was being an arrogant prick and I left after the 3rd song cause he announced "no music until there is SILENCE!" So musically often good, personality==0.
@Waver80 yeah, and it's because of those theories that soon you will become a cave man too, but this time on a sterile planet with nothing to eat, to drink and to breath except toxic craps, see how your argument was stupid... and btw, I was not even speaking of those kind of "theories"....
People detest valor because he took something that wasn't his and changed it drastically and even when Rozz told him to stop using the name he wouldn't and copyrighted it. also, this isn't early, maybe for the valor era it is but christian death formed in 79.
People who worship at the altar of Rozz generally tend to hate Valor. I'm not obsessed with Rozz I just like the music. That being said, I also like Valor a whole hell of a lot.
because Valor is a fucking thief and tried to steal CD from Rozz...
that was Rozz's project from the start... NOT VALOR! he tried to copy Rikk's guitar riffs many times... the only things worthy of a listen were Catastrophe Ballet and Ashes.... even Ashes was a bit weak...
boring, I will not deny that I'm a rozz fan, but I tried to give Valor a chance even listened to a few albums, but when you're putting out such strong imagery you better have the music to back it up, otherwise it's just funny. Church of no Return is aight, but it's not enough to be just aight, when you claim the Christian Death name.
I think the problem with Valor is both that he doesn't fully understand the subversive nature Rozz brought to the band and he cannot keep up to the same level of artistic wit as Rozz. He can't write lyrics!!
That said, he's a helluva musician, and I really do like Atrocities. Most of what he did after that was rubbish, though. Especially when he blended metal music with Christian Death, ugh, shite work.
I don't hate him, I just can't view him in the same artistic light as Rozz.
@deadboys1010 i do agree to an extent. he wasnt a bad lyricist but its true he didn't quite grasp what Rozz was doing and instead took the name Christian Death into a literal meaning writing blatantly anti-christian songs which wasnt EXACTLY what Rozz was trying to do (and no i am not getting into a religious debate here either). blending metal into it wasn;t bad. i happen to like Valor's musicianship on Pornographic Messiah and Born Again Anti-Christian as absurd as the titles are
@deadboys1010 i think valor put alot more great albums out other then atrocities such as sex, drugs & christ, sexy death god, the prophecies were all great albums too. blending metal into cd was great, you can hear the metal influence when valor first joined cd. on atrocities the song Ventriloquist, was very heavy. however i gotta say the shit he has been puting out since 99 has been garbage & i must agree that rozz williams was indeed the heart of christian death. R.I.P. Rozz.
Only seen Christian Death twice, in 1989 and 2008, 20years difference, and both times they blew me away with their passion for THIS music. In the end it doesn't matter if it is Rozz or Valor, it is the fact that such a great band can continue for decades, without major label support, to remain "underground, subversive and influential" without f**king up, I have loved every CD except one(which shall remain nameless). Rockin'!
I'd been listening this music 20 years ago, but the first time I see the vid- I was never aware of his DuranDuran looks though. The music is still fantastic. My favorite album from Christian Death.
In 1979, Joy Division was described as being "dancing music with Gothic overtones."
That's where the term came from, and it stuck to describe most of the post-punk bands of the late seventies and early eighties. The terms are mostly interchangeable, but I myself consider heavier music "Deathrock" and more melodic tones as "Gothic Rock," but like I said, it doesn't really matter, it's all good stuff, anyway.
I liked both Valor and Rozz, they added their own style to C.D. It's too bad they couldn't work out their differences. They put out great songs together.
I dig some of Valor's C.D. stuff, but to my ears, most of his stuff just kinda plods along. With the exception of the "Atrocities" album (there wasn't a single dud on that one, IMO), his songwriting skills are kinda hit & miss. However, this song rocks.
The issue, as I've come to understand it, is not whether Valor ever fronted the band (he did and he does), but rather, that he continued to use the name "Christian Death" after Rozz's departure even though he had agreed not to.
I've read different things. On one hand, it is said that Rozz sold Valor the name. The gimmick of attaching "Featuring Rozz Williams" on the later Rozz C.D. releases was a loophole to avoid legal trouble with Valor.
OTH, the first two releases from Valor without Rozz have "For Sin And Sacrifice We Must Die A Christian Death" . The band was supposed to be renamed "Sin And Sacrifice" when Rozz left.
........so that sounds like Valor knew damn well, that he was NOT suppose to use the name "Christian Death".
However, to me, it's irrelevant. I'm not concerned what the name of a band is if I like the MUSIC.
Yes, Valor was probably in the wrong, but what does that have to do with his MUSIC???
Saying that Valor is an asshole is one thing. What I disagree with is when ppl decide they hate all his MUSIC without even hearing it. Valor has written some great stuff.
Actually I heard from someone "close" to the band, that said it was trickery on Valor's part. Gitane even mentions it on her "Life in Death" cd, that she herself had a hand in taking the name away from Rozz (in so many words). Basically, like Valor got her to trick Rozz somehow, and she knew it was wrong, but did it anyway. I've been a fan of theirs for over 20 years...I love Rozz's music dearly, but there's also a few things Valor did I appreciate. Atrocities was actually a good album Cheers!
That's interesting. I remember reading interviews with Rozz where he flat out says he doesn't give a crap about Christian Death. So I wouldn't be surprised.
But why this thing with "Sin And Sacrifice"???
Anyway, Rozz had some genius moments.......Valor had some genius moments.
Rozz had some steaming pieces of shit.....Valor ditto.
VALOR IS SHIT and so was his band before rozz but after rozz valor sure did pick up imo (in my opinion) and so did rozz they both have stuff that rules and stuff that's not so good
jesus just give it a rest and enjoy the damn music....
Valor has written some good songs, but he's always struck me as more of an imitator while Rozz was more of an original. That said, I wasn't that impressed with Rozz's output after he left Christian Death (with the odd exception, of course).
No, Rozz ..the better one.. is dead.. suicide April Fools day ...This one, Valor.. is playing a show tonight in Miami... but I prefer Christian Death 1334 with Eva O.. Post Rozz..of course the best forever and always for me will be with Rozz...
What amazing sound! is the first time i heard about this project, sounds like a even-more-depressing-post-punk than sisters of mercy, very nice song indeed!
I do like this very early valor and one or two later songs (always did, I still have Wind Kissed Pictures on vinyl), but really, it always was all about Rozz and his lyrical genius and delivery. Bad video, interesting for historical purposes, great song.
uNOOb, by any chance is your vinyl of The Wind Kissed Pictures the Italian version(has the Opheila painting on the cover) or is it the American one with Gitone on the cover? One of my all tiem favorite songs is Lacrima Christi.
I don't care what anyone else says, Valor DID write some good stuff. Not all of it sucks.
Sometimes I think that Rozz could simply make fart noizes with his armpits and people would go........"oh, it's sooooo brilliant!!!!"
And im tired of this reverse discrimination crap. "Agitating a minority"? Sounds like I'm washing a bunch of A-rabs. Be a man. Your all minorities now and so am I, eventhough my ancestors have lived here for centuries, I look around and feel like I'm in a foriegn country. Grow a pair, and take a joke for once ballon knot.
You people get so damn offended over stupid shit. I never said anything negative about gays or anybody else. I simply stated that when the dude first appears on the camera, I find his appearance very striking. Take a damn chill pill you uptight twerp.
Rozz was definitely more "homo" than he was straight. I knew him right before he offed himself. And he wasn't married to Gitane, he was married to Eva O. Valor and Gitane were an item... dunno if they were married, but they have a kid together. Get your facts straight before you offer an opinion! :P
But would you snuffle my muffin? I love how people always say things like "you claim you knew him" like he was fucking John Lennon or something. He was a dirty junkie pedophile that lived in Hollywood who was in a band. Dime-a-dozen buddy, and if you didn't notice, I wasn't name dropping for street cred. :P
It's been what, 10 years? No haunting yet, but that could be because I'm not a 13 year-old boy. Did I mention "pedophile"? :)
Hey! April Fools day just passed! That means Rozz's suicide anniversary just passed! Fuck, that was a crazy time period. Three people in that crew offed themselves over the course of like 3 weeks; two hangings, one deliberate heroin overdose.
I prefer Rozz over Valor's voice, although this is a great song. I agree with some of the other comments, that Rozz was able to bring out an unexplainable darkness, & expressed that through his songs & spoken word, etc. Hi is an inspiration to many,& he's greatly missed. Hails to ROZZ!
Valor has definitely put out some crappy albums, notably Sexy Death God and Pornographic Messiah, among others. But his early contributions to the project were excellent. But Rozz's output of crap, through his revitalized Christian Death in the 90s, far outweighs that of Valor. Rage of Angels and Path of Sorrows are SO bad, that they make All The Hate seem like pure genius.
When i saw him in the late 90's he was wearing (on stage, no less) sweatpants pushed up to his knees and a faded black tank -top. His guitarist had on Metallica t-shirt!! (inside out). Valor was hairy and filthy. Really ooky. Yuck!! We only went to see Switchblade Symphony anyway.
well, i gotta say this to all the Valor haters, Had Rozz not committed suicide by hanging he would have overdosed. I have seen Valor get stomped (check the Valor vs Frankie from hexed on youtube, a lil something for ValorHators Inc to chuckle about), get dicked outta money at shows in Spain and France, have hissy fits etc, hell I have even partied with the guy on occasion but I gotta say at least he's no junkie and so he's alive, touring and making music whereas Rozz can't.
y'know I went and checked out Valor vs. Frankie and it had the opposite effect on me. It kinda' sickened me to be honest. Eva O. in the audience causing a scene; yuck. And I thought, y'know I didn't hate David Gilmour when he "stole" Pink Floyd from Roger Waters. Valor didn't steal Christian death; Rozz really let it go. And I really think Atrocities IS my favorite. Just wanted to say thanks for opening my old rusty mind a little!
This is supposed to make me hate Valor LESS? Listen to "Catastrophe Ballet" and then listen to this wannabe twaddle. Valor what a douch bag!!!! Even when his version was decent ie: Atrocities it was Gitane Demone holding his flaccid ego erect. Give me a break!
In all fairness, Rozz had already left Christian Death in 1985, after restarting it in 1981. Valor took over in 1985 shortly after Rozz left. The band never intended to reuse the name "Christian Death." It was a marketing scheme made by some Italian bookie. Christian Death actually put on flyers "Out of the Ashes of Christian Death Rises Sin & Sacrifice," but people went around screaming about how Christian Death got back together. Valor and the band won the rights to the name, so why the fuss?
I think people overlook Valor's creative abilities simply because Rozz was far more charasmatic as a frontman. Rozz's often-pretentious antics somehow worked for him, whereas Valor just comes across looking like a douchebag even when his songs are good, as is the case here.
What a jam!! He is an amazing artist regardless of the politics and the name you put behind it. GItane seals the deal, no matter which of the two contributed their talent to what album. Christian Death is one of a kind all around

........so that sounds like Valor knew damn well, that he was NOT suppose to use the name "Christian Death".
ClaudLeon 2 years ago
Actually I heard from someone "close" to the band, that said it was trickery on Valor's part. Gitane even mentions it on her "Life in Death" cd, that she herself had a hand in taking the name away from Rozz (in so many words). Basically, like Valor got her to trick Rozz somehow, and she knew it was wrong, but did it anyway. I've been a fan of theirs for over 20 years...I love Rozz's music dearly, but there's also a few things Valor did I appreciate. Atrocities was actually a good album Cheers!

To BellaStrega50,
What I still don't understand is why Gitane get's a free pass with all the Rozz fanatics.
I mean, she recorded 3 albums, 1 ep and like 2 or 3 singles with Valor under the name "Christian Death".
It seems that simply because she trash talks Valor, apparently, all is forgiven with the Rozz crowd.
Anyway, for me, The Wind Kissed Pictures(and the various singles at this time), Atrocities and The Scriptures is Valor's finest IMO. Take Care.
ClaudLeon 2 years ago
Maybe because she made amends with Rozz? I dunno...
and they did record Dream Home Heartache together, which was rather kick ass IMHO :)
BellaStrega50 2 years ago
"and they did record Dream Home Heartache together". Hmm. I'll try to check that out.
Frankly, I wasn't too impressed with most of Rozz's post C.D. projects. Path Of Sorrow's was ok. But nothing to scream about.
OTH, I havn't dug most of Valor's stuff starting with S And D and J.C. and everything after.
Ironically, I think they both hit their stride when they worked together for Catastrophe Ballet and Ashes.
But that's just me.
Fun talking with ya. ;p
ClaudLeon 2 years ago 2
Oh please do check it out, there's not one song on that album that I don't like.
CB and Ashes were good indeed, lotsa danceable tunes on both that were played in the clubs back in the day. I enjoyed both albums :)

ClaudLeon 2 years ago
VALOR IS SHIT and so was his band before rozz but after rozz valor sure did pick up imo (in my opinion) and so did rozz they both have stuff that rules and stuff that's not so good
jesus just give it a rest and enjoy the damn music....
Daka12s 2 years ago
Valor has written some good songs, but he's always struck me as more of an imitator while Rozz was more of an original. That said, I wasn't that impressed with Rozz's output after he left Christian Death (with the odd exception, of course).

I guess he picked April Fools' Day so that people would wonder if he had really done it. Haha! Good one.

What amazing sound! is the first time i heard about this project, sounds like a even-more-depressing-post-punk than sisters of mercy, very nice song indeed!

is not only one necessarily, so shut up you two.

I do like this very early valor and one or two later songs (always did, I still have Wind Kissed Pictures on vinyl), but really, it always was all about Rozz and his lyrical genius and delivery. Bad video, interesting for historical purposes, great song.
uN00b 2 years ago 2
uNOOb, by any chance is your vinyl of The Wind Kissed Pictures the Italian version(has the Opheila painting on the cover) or is it the American one with Gitone on the cover? One of my all tiem favorite songs is Lacrima Christi.
I don't care what anyone else says, Valor DID write some good stuff. Not all of it sucks.
Sometimes I think that Rozz could simply make fart noizes with his armpits and people would go........"oh, it's sooooo brilliant!!!!"
ClaudLeon 2 years ago 3
Premature Ejaculation wasn't far from Williams making farting noises with his armpits and I'm sure many thought it was brilliant.

One more thing... Rozz wasn't a homo. He was married to Gitane Demone.
countessnoxi 2 years ago
Rozz was definitely more "homo" than he was straight. I knew him right before he offed himself. And he wasn't married to Gitane, he was married to Eva O. Valor and Gitane were an item... dunno if they were married, but they have a kid together. Get your facts straight before you offer an opinion! :P
snufflemuffinpants 2 years ago
Rozz was also a total piece of shit, as were most of that crew. It's kinda gross to me that people idolize him so much.
snufflemuffinpants 2 years ago 4
RELAX! I meant to say Eva O!!! & I wouldn't want to sniff your muffin either!
countessnoxi 2 years ago
You claim you knew him before he died, & you bash him like that too! I hope he comes back to haunt ya. :))
countessnoxi 2 years ago
But would you snuffle my muffin? I love how people always say things like "you claim you knew him" like he was fucking John Lennon or something. He was a dirty junkie pedophile that lived in Hollywood who was in a band. Dime-a-dozen buddy, and if you didn't notice, I wasn't name dropping for street cred. :P
It's been what, 10 years? No haunting yet, but that could be because I'm not a 13 year-old boy. Did I mention "pedophile"? :)
snufflemuffinpants 2 years ago
No, I wouldn't snuffle your muffin. I'm far from 13.
Yes it's been 10 yrs. R.I.P.
The only reason Kieth Richards is still alive, is because he gets his body detoxt, otherwise he'd be long gone too.
countessnoxi 2 years ago
That, and he hasn't hung himself. :P
Hey! April Fools day just passed! That means Rozz's suicide anniversary just passed! Fuck, that was a crazy time period. Three people in that crew offed themselves over the course of like 3 weeks; two hangings, one deliberate heroin overdose.
Totally nuts.
snufflemuffinpants 2 years ago
I prefer Rozz over Valor's voice, although this is a great song. I agree with some of the other comments, that Rozz was able to bring out an unexplainable darkness, & expressed that through his songs & spoken word, etc. Hi is an inspiration to many,& he's greatly missed. Hails to ROZZ!

It's the hair! That's the main thing I hated about him. It's called no-lye relaxer - you can purchase it at any drugstore!

RoseCrossVato 2 years ago 2
I dislike all the material Rozz did under the Christian death Ft. Rozz era though I would put it on the same level as Valour in the nineties.

Christian Death is cool. I saw them more times than I can count back in the 80's. Rozz was a nice person contrary to the image he portrayed.

well, i gotta say this to all the Valor haters, Had Rozz not committed suicide by hanging he would have overdosed. I have seen Valor get stomped (check the Valor vs Frankie from hexed on youtube, a lil something for ValorHators Inc to chuckle about), get dicked outta money at shows in Spain and France, have hissy fits etc, hell I have even partied with the guy on occasion but I gotta say at least he's no junkie and so he's alive, touring and making music whereas Rozz can't.
avdiz 3 years ago
y'know I went and checked out Valor vs.
Elgrandeshit 3 years ago
