I had a large, wooden box once. It was almost empty, but it did have a few gemstones in it: topaz, ruby, onyx, emerald, etc. Not all of them were polished, but that was okay. Their value was evident. People seeing my box almost empty started dumping handfuls of gravel into it. It quickly became full.
