What an incredible blending of two very distinctive voices. Both of them have such a "roughness" to their voices, yet, blended, it really works. Great song from my teen years in Daytona Beach, FL!! Many fond memories of this song playing in the background while hanging out with friends. It was such an incredible time in my life. Thanks Stevie and Tom!

@bennoyes05 Tom Petty may have been one of the few rock stars Stevie didn't bang back in the day. They were close friends. I think Stevie was also friends with Tom's first wife Jane so that may have made him off limits. Jane was the inspiration for the title "The Edge Of Seventeen". Stevie asked Jane when she met Tom and she replied "at the age of seventeen". She had a thick Southern accent and Stevie thought she said "the edge of seventeen" and thought it made a great song title.

@michaelakel Tom Petty wrote her the song "Insider" because she wanted him to write her a song, because she really really liked the music they made. Tom fell in love with "Insider" and kept it for his album. Stevie understood because it wasn't as 'swampy or bluesy' enough for her. She wanted something more like TPATH was playing, not Insider, like she was playing. He had SDMHA already written from a past album, and played that for her. She loved it and they recorded it for her album Bella Donna.

@robertlaf That's a valid take, really...I don't think her vocals on FM's "Gold Dust Woman" (recording on that song went deep into the night the day it was cut)would have happened without him.

Still though, I think this collaboration with TP and the Heartbreakers was a no-brainer -- they were and still are good friends -- and nobody else out there, no one, could have delivered this song properly. It's still the best duet I've ever heard.
