Ihsahn was definetly the driving force in emperor when it came to writing music. All the same, his solo stuff is awesome but I still wish Emperor was still together
LOL!!!!! That was corny to me to say the least, but I liked the raw production, even if the guitar work was sub-par.
I will say though that he has grown a helluvalot since then... Listen to his new material (in Inexordium). He is crushing on drums and the message isn't preachy or evangelistic at all!!!!
and my thing is.... what else are they gonna sing about except what they know!
but.... a look at Extol's and especially Antestor's lyrics sans music just shows that they address and experience the same hate, pain, sorrow, joy, religious challenges including hating religious authorities-whatever else as anyone else in the Black Metal scene, they just happen to ALSO believe that there is a God who is the solution to those problems.
Just ordered this album - a tad late perhaps! Got the other two though, they're both amazing so hopefully this one is as good. Ihsahn>Emperor? Discuss lol
@Al266667 I honestly don't see his solo stuff being better than Emperor, nor do I see it the other way either. They are both masterful entities on the same playing field and both create equally amazing music. I mean, honestly, with Ihsahn's complete control over the production of the final Emperor album, you could basically count that as his first solo album (in spirit). Hell, his solo stuff is pretty much where Emperor could've gone if they were still releasing new music.
He reminds me a lot of Extol's Ole Borud! He does more brutal death vocs than Ole but Ole does better clean vox/harmonies! Both also experiment with a bunch of different styles of music but always remain prograssive!
@dapianoman76 *sigh* No offense, but I can't help but think that the idea of making black-derivative metal for the purpose of drawing people to Christianity is wholly dishonest to the very ethos of the music. Go listen to your Extol and Antestor if you please, but most Ihsahn fans are going to find it rather insulting that you imply a) they can't see how aesthetically bad it is, and b) that hearing some Norwegian bloke praising Jebus will convert them to the system that black metal so despises.
@idreamofur I have been an Extol and an Antestor fan for years, and I just see it as artists singing about what they relate to. Extol and Antestor have never had "preachy" lyrics! I never listened to them and felt like I needed to be drawn to Christianity, same with Emperor.... Never felt drawn to Satanism or Athiesm from listening to them. As far as I am concerned, all three bands represent good art from different perspectives and walks of life!
@dapianoman76 Reading my reply again, I realize I was overly abrasive. So let me clarify. I fully support the rights of artists to make music with whatever message they want in whatever way they want, but I find it very fishy whenever Christian bands (as opposed to bands who happen to be Christian) enter into a very irreligious scene and adopt the style and atmosphere of the music while pushing an evangelical Christian message. I think it goes beyond the music and into bringing souls to Jesus.
Just like someone said a while back (can't remember who...)
"There are 8 notes in a scale, show me the satanic one". On the same note, I say "show me the Christian one!
I am sure that Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven faced the same kind of controversies and criticisms back in the day. Good and bad art (and raw talent) will speak for themselves and should be appreciated as such.
@dapianoman76 And I really want to stress that I'm not dissing Christian artists. I just think that if you are going to make a band whose chief message is a Christian one, black metal is not the place to go. Obviously, Beethoven was a religious man who wrote quite a bit of excellent religious music. But he didn't buy a turban and write a bunch of bland middle-eastern music to reach out to the infidels. And I don't think that Extol would deny that they want to bring souls to Christianity.
...Some Christian (AND NON CHRISTIAN) bands should not ever associate themselves with or call themselves black metal-not even because of lyrical content, but because the quality of music and musicianship is so horrid that it is an insult to the genre.... I won't even mention most "death core" or whatever other "core" bands are out there! Read Extol's interviews, they say they never wanted to be an evangelist band. And; "Undecieved", "Burial", & "The Forsaken" are 3 classic extreme metal albums!
@dapianoman76 We'll just agree to disagree then. You do make good points about them having somewhat varied and genuine lyrical content, as opposed to, say, Horde (Invert the Inverted Cross? Really?). But I have to insist on the whole concept of religious certitude being antithetical to what I would argue is the heart of Black Metal - self-empowerment. The most flamboyant strains of Satanism and Paganism are still symbolic in nature - there is no bowing to a greater authority than oneself.
I think that mutual respect while agreeing to disagree is perfectly fine! Your life, with or without belief, is your unique journey and self empowerment or self destruction is up to individuals. My pooint is that a lot of self empowerment is really self destruction and that's all too true in music no matter what you do or don't believe in. Thankfully, Ihsahn, unlike most of his former bandmates, excelled instead of self destructing!
Ihsahn is one of the biggest musical geniuses to come out of the black metal scene...whether it's Emperor or his solo project, everything he does is brilliant :)

Well.. all I would say is that it's kinda dick to trash Black Metal but like Ihsahn's solo stuff- you should appreciate everything in his catalog including all of Emperor, especially the pure early age Emperor that he is known best for.
It's hard to find a good metal band in this time. Everyone is trying to copy someone, who is popular. I've been looking for something orginal for three days. Everywhere are Slipknot shit copies, Children of Bodom copies and gothic shit. For now Ihsahn is the third band that is different, even if the clean part is very simillar to Opeth. Mayby anyone would help me. I like Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Limbonic Art, etc. Do you now something interesting for me?
Thx. I know them, but there's too much chaos in their music. I like clean, powerful and epic sound. Mayhem mayby is a legend, but they sound like they were recording in my garage :) (mayby Chimera is different). HAIL BM!
Thx! I know most of them, but Sanctification is something new for me. I've found a band from 2005 called Lyfthrasyr. For now they have released 2 albums, but they are very good. And now I'm listening to Winds of Plague. Sounds nice too. AVE!
Sounds nice, I'll try them. Mayby Arcturus and Kovenant are litlle too industrial and it's hard to call them Black Metal, or even metal. Thx for help!
You know who Ihsahn is right? Of Emperor and stave church arson fame? One could argue that all but the three or four black metal bands centered around Mayhem, Darkthrone, and Emperor are all copies. I'm not doing that, but you could.
You think it's just another Ihsahn black metal masterpiece, then 2:44 hit and he's like "Fuck genres." with that clean neck slide.

I agree with you about this song, but I think that the bad production black metal has its charm. And yeah - Ihsahn is very good musician!

how the hell are you gonna trash black metal yet hail Ihsahn at the same time?
intodusk 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
simple.because ihsahn isn't plain black metal(which I hate).this band is much more than that...that's why I like it
steveharrismetalgod 2 years ago
Well.. all I would say is that it's kinda dick to trash Black Metal but like Ihsahn's solo stuff- you should appreciate everything in his catalog including all of Emperor, especially the pure early age Emperor that he is known best for.
intodusk 2 years ago
it's only a matter of taste man...me,I only dig his latest stuff-never liked old emperor...

Do you now something interesting for me?

try anaal nathrakh mayhem gorgoroth burzum those are some good bands
projektmayhem666 2 years ago
Thx. I know them, but there's too much chaos in their music. I like clean, powerful and epic sound. Mayhem mayby is a legend, but they sound like they were recording in my garage :) (mayby Chimera is different). HAIL BM!
killerazazello 2 years ago
try also Dissection,Naglfar,Graveworm,Gorefest,Hypocrisi "virus" album,Ex Deo,Septic Flesh,Sanctification,Dark Funeral...
666Battor 2 years ago
Thx! I know most of them, but Sanctification is something new for me. I've found a band from 2005 called Lyfthrasyr. For now they have released 2 albums, but they are very good. And now I'm listening to Winds of Plague. Sounds nice too. AVE!

Try these bands: Gire (hun), Watch my Dying, Madder Mortem, Arcturus, Sear Bliss, Thy Catafalque (hun), Stormlord, Kovenant...
uquera9 2 years ago
Sounds nice, I'll try them. Mayby Arcturus and Kovenant are litlle too industrial and it's hard to call them Black Metal, or even metal. Thx for help!
killerazazello 2 years ago
Arcturus industrial? Now that's an interesting opinion. O_o

You know who Ihsahn is right? Of Emperor and stave church arson fame? One could argue that all but the three or four black metal bands centered around Mayhem, Darkthrone, and Emperor are all copies. I'm not doing that, but you could.
ctvwr 2 years ago
Ihsahn was not involved in the stave church arsons...that was Samoth, also of Emperor.
lohryx5 2 years ago 16
I was led to believe that Ihsahn was present for a number of them as well? And the main figure was Varg correct?
ctvwr 2 years ago
No, Ihsahn was not present. He steered clear of actively engaging in such actions.
lohryx5 2 years ago
And Tchort and Faust, also of Emperor.
Ihsahn has stated that he valued his freedom to much to risk an action with consequences such as imprisonment.
coalhalo 2 years ago
i guess Immortal could be added to the list of "four"
Faze390 2 years ago 2
Undoubtedly. I did not mean to give a full catalog, nor would I be able. I just blurted the most influential big namers on the tip of my tongue.
ctvwr 2 years ago
mayhem, bathory, burzum, satyricon, marduk
