nah if it was running on 2 cylinders i would have noticed right away since it would stall easily when taking off. I use to have a 4cyl Tempo that was running on 3 cyl and it would stall every time i put it into drive.
i recommend thick oil to most older engines anyway. but that noise can also be the crankshaft. they can get warped on a really cold start. using premium gas on an older car and then cold startin it can be very bad too. id have to look at the engine to tell u whats up. if it goes away when the engine warms up thats piston or valve slap.
jtreign9097 said thicker oils good for older cars maybe he mistyped when he said 5w30?
jtreign9097 feel free to correct me if Im wrong ok buddy? =)
But yeah thick oil is worth a shot thats why I think you should try lucas oil stabalizer. Lots of people who have bad engines keep their engines going a little longer with Lucas Oil stabalizer.
My friends transmission lasted a good 6 months longer after using Lucas Transmission fix.
i did say 5w30 only because that engine is a 3cyl so thicker oil may bog it down alot 5w30 wont hurt that 3cyl...i do recommend thicker oil or 10w50 with a lil lucas oil for a leaky/smokey engine or anything over 100k needs that stuff for better compression
the oil you been using all along may have contributed to this but thats piston slap i had a customer today with a 1.3 on a 4dr swift and had that same sound. i replaced crank pulley and no luck and replace 2 lifters and 1 warped valve and it got better but the piston was still slapping so installed a new oil pump and used 10w50 with some lucas it stopped the slapping completly but the pistion did cause damage to the valve i had to replace.
Ive herd the same sound with my metro. i warmed it up and havent herd it snece that day..

rod bearing is out and most likly you will have to replace it with an oversize bearing

For a minute I thought it was the valves clacking

@chazcoinc if its wont stop its a blown piston.

check if your vacume system is hoked to the pump
davison1021 2 years ago
yeah it was a loose hose that goes to the throttle body.
jmoyet 2 years ago
a loose vacuum hose?
davison1021 2 years ago
that puffing sound was a loose hose at the throttle body (the part the air filter is on and looks like a carb).
if its not that i have no idea.

running on 2 cylinders? bad wire, dist cap or fouled plug. watch it in the dark and watch for wires arcing...

but thanks for the suggestion.

i could be wrong just throwing it out there was your a/c system on? sounds like it cycles on and off
dsanchez74087408 3 years ago
no a/c in this metro.
the noise already went away. check my other videos
jmoyet 3 years ago
change ou the connecting rod bearings and main bearings. dont forget the thrust bearings. 3 hour job....save the engine. not a hard job at all

either the crank pully or the a/c very easy things to fix
jtreign9097 3 years ago
no a/c on that metro...
haven't heard the noise again... yet.
jmoyet 3 years ago
what oil do u use for that motor?
jtreign9097 3 years ago
10w40 synthetic mix
jmoyet 3 years ago
you should try 5w30 this issue may go away. 10w40 may not be good for the oil pump. it does sound alot like a harmonic balancer/crank pully
jtreign9097 3 years ago
car has always taken 10w40 even the auto parts store computer says it takes 10w40.
dont know why all of a sudden it would require a different oil type....
iv heard of people using 5w30 on 3cyl engine but thats usualy when they have done performance mods to the engine.
such as turbo charger/super charger, performance head replacement (valve, camshaft, spring replacement, and port & polish).
iv been thinking of installing one of those underdrive pully.

Try adding Lucas Oil Stabalizer
That stuff is really thick and a lot of old timers swear by it.
Its worth a shot for $9
JohnFromSpace 3 years ago
cool i'll try it...
iv been thinking about trying zmax also.
im not too sure about 5w30 dont want something wrong to go bad in the engine due to the 5w30 oil

Dont bother with the Zmax.

ah ok good to know.
so how is your metro doing?

hehe... just my luck...
now it does a loud vibrating ROAR at mid rpm. it goes away if i go at high rpms or lower rpms... to me it sounds like internal mechanical problems.

If the car has a/c it could be the a/c compressor if not then not sure.

no a/c in that metro model
