@deficithawker Sorry not saying "includes" was a mis-statement. The example still holds. I don't know what your food and energy budget is, but I live modestly and can say that mine averages about 35% of non disposable expenses.

So if food and energy prices double (which they have in the last 3 years), it's downright irresponsible to mis-represent them.

@deficithawker I've given you two things to check out. It would take 1 minute for you to google image arm reset charts, and 15 mins to watch the chrismartenson fuzzy numbers video.

If you actually wanted to be as through as I was, it should take you about 2 days to collect and crunch the numbers in excel yourself if you know your stuff (and it seems like you do).

I also carefully track my own finances back 6 years now and they don't fit the BLS numbers at all.

Spend 16 mins to look.

@deficithawker Google image arm reset chart. See for yourself. As for bonds there's a huge bubble in bonds right now. The Fed is the default buyer and they've stated that's what they are doing now. Because they simply write a blank check to buy it, it's inflation.

You stated headline food and energy are supposed to be 3.1%. Strange, since the farmer's bureau, measures a 11% increase in food alone this year. (Not even counting energy.)

Although I didn't implicitly say so, when I said CPI, I used core CPI as that is the number that is seen in the media 95% of the time.

The banks can now borrow money for virtually free. If you can borrow money for less than a percent, and turn around and invest it for over 50% in BRIC countries/commodities. Most ARMs have 5 year reset windows. This Oct/Nov has a huge amount of resets similar to 2008.

@deficithawker Everything I stated is true. Have you ever tried calculating CPI using the BLS numbers? Try it.

Prices were considered "volatile" because when a month was posted a storm or drought could have caused a wild swing in the numbers, giving misleading information. But if the ENTIRE YEAR (and following years) were off expected it certainly wasn't volatility.

Google chrismartenson fuzzy numbers. Then check his numbers with the BLS's actual numbers.

@deficithawker They changed the way they calculated inflation in 1981, and the 1990's. They took out energy and food from calculations, they now weigh things very strangely (like medical costs being next to nothing) and they substitute goods from a basket of foods (which defies the entire point of inflation!) as well as use hedonic measurements only when it's favorable low inflation numbers.

He's right, if measured the same way as 79, we'd have 10% inflation.
