  • Always awesome DK thanks for sharing

  • Great teaching style!! thank you!

  • it may sound stupid, but this video is probably one of the most inspirational i've ever seen on yt. shame i son't have my bass with me i'll have to wait till day ster tomorrow to try those basslines. anyway, thank you marlovedk

  • That's some fine ass porn music...

  • Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou. Your lessons are the best.

I'm an international freelance drummer / percussionist who has recently picked up playing the bass, which is not only tons of fun but it enables me to teach drummers at my workshops and private lessons how to really lock in with a bass player.

Your lessons are giving so much great stuff to play and practise.

    Love your work !!

    God Bless.

    Chris Brien

  • Love this.....have you done any more for beginners?

  • Hi Marlow I'm a dane, im writing in english because other people may have the same question as me :)

Question: What program do you use to get the beat with the notes? I've been looking all over the internet for such a program/software without any luck, can you please tell me/us what you use thx a lot :)

  • @xxBimmerxx I used Garageband on my macbook

  • good for newbee

  • Hi everyone i got an 15 amp that came with my guitar (beringher) can i use it to play with my bass? Or it will damage the amp?

  • @verdelina

At low volume you can without, yes (max 20 % of amp's volume cap or something). It doesn't exactly sound great though, so a real bass amp will definitely be way better. You can get a really cheap secondhand 15-30W bass amp.

  • whats the track called so i can download it?

  • Thank you for posting this. I'm just learning BASS after playing guitar for many years. It's quite a bit different than playing guitar that's for sure so any advice helps. Thanks again.

But PLEASE speak louder because a lot of us are having a hard time hearing you. Thanks agin. You're very talented.

  • Great way to have us (the Audience) interact. wonderful idea. thank you. I'm so excited I must get out of bed and practice along with you. Constructive criticism is good but keep in mind for those who over do it not everyone is at the same level and could use step by step tutorials not only that these tutorials are free. Thanks again brother for posting this vid and God bless you.

  • Great way to have the us the Audience interact. wonderful idea. thank you. I so excited I must get out of bed and practice along with you. Again thank you. God bless.

  • Hey Marlowe. Thank you for this video, it was greatly inspiring! Where can i make these backing tracks?

  • wow que genial tus improvisaciones, y los bajos que tenes :D! algun dia tendre los mismos

  • you were playing great but you kept stopping wanted to hear you play the whole song make a another video play whole song please

  • Where to get the backing track, can't find it on the website. Anyone got the exact link?

  • wow this video has a really iconic feel, especially during the introduction. it's like looking back at the origins of a legend. well i guess it's not like that...it IS that!

  • I think all what you wanna play on the bass guitar is following the rhythm!

  • dang dude cant really hear your voice, but your lines are awesome

    thanks for posting

  • Hey. Can't find the backing track on the website. Got a link or hint?

  • your videos are great. thank you for your patience,

    .

  • this guy is like the justin sandercoe of bass

  • Teach us the way Moby!

  • Thank you very much - its all so helpful, and you have such a gift in imparting knowledge. Tak

  • This is extremely helpful! I am just starting out and I really like how you give the viewer a chance to try, alteranating with you. It's a great video. Thank you.

  • THis is perfect! I am a pianist, but have always wanted to learn to play bass. My theory skills are really good, but finding a beginnin and incremental way to learn was lost on me. Until I saw this video. GOOD JOB!!!!!

  • first i want to thank you for taking the time and making this video and sharing it with us , its really sounds good, its a long time when i didnt play bass and this video makes me want to go back to my old bass , buy a new strings and start playing again .

thanks you again and i hope to see you in a new videos

  • Nice groove. Now it's going to be in my head all day. MarloweDK's site is nice, especially for beginners (like me).

  • ur ryt hes an idiot :P

  • great!!!, i really learned a lot, diff styles of bass lines, you give me an idea on my practice, thanks a lot. And to those critiques, this is one of the top few great lessons that aspiring bass guitarist should watched.. i am a bass player myself..

  • English is not my first lenguage and I can understand 100% what he is saying, and you dont need to see what his left hand is doing, he is saying it:

    a) only root

    b) root and 5

    c) root and 3

    d) root 5 and 3

    d) mixed them etc

    chords are: C-G-F-F

  • You could dramatically improve this video by:

    1) decent lighting, the video is way too dark, can barely see what you are doing and there is a reflection right on the neck of the bass which makes it even harder to see what your left hand is doing.

    2) Speaking louder or into the microphone and NOT having the sound loop playing OVER your voice in the beginning, can't understand what you are saying because you voice is lower than the sound loop

  • @transmitmedia Ive bettered myself in more recent videos. Thx anyway for the critique:-)

  • @MarloweDK gj i was wonderin wat u played at 4:24-4:34

  • @transmitmedia or maybe YOU need to buy a new computer and decent set of speakers hahaha

  • @transmitmedia i can see almost everything hes doing .... put your screens brightness higher...

  • @transmitmedia This is very constructive. There should be more honest feedback on the quality of videos without impugning the character or heritage of the poster.

  • that is a FANTASTIC lesson. love your approach.

  • lots of positive comments from the other disciples - thanks DK for more easy to follow/ easy to use riffs and ideas...

  • Genius ! I Love this guy !

  • oh man i really learned alot you are truly a blessing

  • it might just be my speakers, but i cant hear any bass...

  • Very very good lesson

  • Wow!!! This is just fantastic!!!!

Please keep posting stuff like this that is so useful in actual playing!!!

  • people in these videos love to talk for the first 10 mins just play

  • hey, I really want to get into bass, what kind of guitar would you suggest?

  • may i suggest rondomusic (dot) com

  • @ericthedead4 warwick

  • @cannibalpirate Thanks man, I'm still thinking about it.. I think I'm gonna try to go for a Fender, but those Warwick's look really nice.. Thanks.

  • be sure to get a bass that's well-balanced. Some of the Warwicks have too much neck dive. I'd recommend an older Fender, or a Mike Lull.

  • it really all depends on what type of music you like, if you like the more heavy stuff, like metalcore, metal, etc, you could check out an ibanez

or if you like a more classic sound you could go with a fender

its best to google this stuff in order to get more information, you knonw?

Anyways, good luck bro, and i got an Ibanez, and i like it :D good luck man

  • @djchimpster91 Thanks, I do like metal, but I think if I'm going to be playing any music, it'll be beatles/rush or something, I don't know. But I'll try with the fender first, if I get better I might get an ibanez.

    thanks for the help man.

  • I just started playing bass. I know what the root and fifth notes are but what are thirds? Please help

  • Go up three half steps from the root for a minor third and four half steps from the root for a major third. The third makes the difference between a major and minor chord, so it´s good to know the difference ;-)

  • @Enie009 the 6th too makes difference between minor and major ? no ?

  • no, th 6th has nothing to do with major and minor chords. However, there is a minor and a major 6th, which is one half step/two half steps above the 5th. As you´re a beginner, I would recommend to concentrate on root, 5th and thirds

  • @ coreon571. No, the 6th makes a difference in as far as "dominant 7", "major 7" "diminished 7" etc chords are concerned. E.g. C, E, G, Bflat = C7 (aka C dominant 7) chord. Sharpen the Bflat to make it C, E, G, B, = C Major 7 chord. If you flatten the Bflat to make it C, E, G, A, = C6 chord since A is the 6th of C. If you then flatten both the third and fifth but retain the 6th, to get, C Eflat, Fsharp, A,= C half dimished chord. Finally, C Eflat Fsharp, Gsharp = C diminished 7 chord.

  • You know, too much technical sounds like robot ,on my personal view, playing from soul its the real deal!

  • @ latino1302. You are right, playing from the depths of your soul is tha real deal ---- but before one can do that, and unless one is a mega genius, he/she needs to acquaint him/her self with all the technical details so that the same can slowly find their way into the soul from whence they will flow and manifest as sweet sounding music. Even the best naturally gifted artists seek technical knowledge not to play or sing technics but to understand the music better.

  • you're a great teacher, i am learning very fast...

  • wow !!! zen-bass :))

    Thanks,

    George

  • Marlowe, you are a genius my friend. Thanks for everything. =]

  • I had fun jammin with you Marlowe! Thanks!

  • Another great lesson, as always. You have the best teaching techniques I've found and it's given me fresh ideas that are a lot of fun. Thanks!

  • this is a fantastic lesson. learning the way melody and harmony tie together though intervals and building on them with out any fancy showoff stuff is something that makes a good musicain not just a bassist. Thanks!

  • i have 4 years under my belt and this is great great practice

  • Great class man, thanks for helping beginners like me !

  • tell me pls what kind of software do you use pls pls pls

  • The squier vintage modified jazz bass is really good for the price, or u could get a used fender jazz, there is quite a few around.

  • Excellent Classes. IN fact The only thing I need is to buy the bass (duh) but well it is a good head start! Do you have any advice for me looking for jazz music (types of bass and/or best recomendation)? Thanks alot!!!

  • fender is great for jazz, but also very expensive. just go to different guitar stores and find the one that "feels" right for you. but whatever you do, don't buy a squire, stagg, or vintage ok lol :)

  • no no no, the vintage i'm talking about is a guitar brand which makes cheap copies of beautiful bass guitars. I had one, and they suck.

  • Thanks !!

    Great lesson :)

Keep it up for us !

  • best video , now i can use my bgsjambox thing and know what it means . it has very similar loops

thanks alot . very good stuff

i enjoyed playing along with you

  • i have now watched this video 8 times and jammed along 7 times lol great im teaching myself bass so this is great THANK YOU

  • thats what im talkin about... great teacher! keep up and thank you!

  • Man this is one of the most beneficial, informative instructions I've ever seen. Thanks so much for your videos. You're an inspiration to me to keep practicing and making myself a better musician all the time. Thanks.

  • I can't tell if it's just the bass drum in the backing track, but are you playing a ghost note in your basic rhythm?

  • Great stuff Thanks!

    Question please:

When you say we play the 5th then the next time the 3rd etc.

Does the 5th and 3rd refer to the 5th of the chord we are on or the key we are in?

In other word the 5th of C as I know it is G and the 3rd of C is E. So when on 1st measure (i.e. C chord) that is what notes I play, C E and G.

Now on the G using the same thinking I would play G(1) B(3) D(5).

Am I right? I know I should hear this stuff but I always wonder things....

    Thanks

  • I love the neck on your p-bass. Gorgeous tone too!

  • im 5 instruments old and i play 13 years.cool.

  • tnx man

  • This is a great lesson! It gives a chance for the student to play/repeat what you've played. I am a huge fan! Love your website and think you're an absolute awesome musician. I'd love to see more of these interactive lessons, they really help me to advance. Thank you for taking your time to post this stuff.

  • When you combined the groovy and the sustained notes, the bass guitar sounds incredible. Like some kind of electricity flowing through your spines. I'm glad I stumbled quickly into your site. You're playing exactly what I would like to learn. Thank you very much. And how would you advice beginners like me with some guitar background on choosing between the P-bass and the J-bass. I like your bass guitar. I like maple fingerboard. Which do you prefer:of the two types. I'm fine with 4-strings. Tnx.

  • Hi MarlowDK,

I'm just a new convert from elctric guitar to bass guitar. I got tired of the wailing and screaming plus I could not get faster than Michael Angelo Batio (hehehe, just for reference). Originally, I got inspired listening to Flea's "Soul to Squeeze" and The Bangle's "Something that You said". Also Candlebox's "Far Behind". I knew when I heard these, it's the kind of bass lines I want to be able to play.

  • i'm starting to play bass... thank you so much for this video... i'm trying to do those lessons

    one more time... thanks!!!

    (sorry for my bad english)

  • great english!

  • HAHAHA!!!

  • WAAA I NEED THAT BACKGROUND WHERE I CAN FINDIT PLEASE is just too cool men you are awesome but please tell me where i can find backgroundas like that it is really nice

  • made that myself, send me a message with your email

  • great lesson sir

  • you have a beautifulk stable of guitars by the way hha

    thanks

    INDIGO ALL STARS

  • nice ehr..

i love the background music, yet annoying,

in my mind i played a lot of imaginary tones you played

  • simple YET EFFECTIVE >>..thanks Mars

  • Where I can find that backgound music??

  • EN TU CULO

  • nice ending! lol :) Good video!

  • Great stuff man! Where can I get that background music?

  • i think hes using a drum machine, buy a chgeap 60 dollar one, incredible if you want to have some drums to play along with (sometimes if you get a reallly nice one they come with bass guitar and other instruments but then its really a synth) try a Alesis 16? i think its pretty good i myself have a MRT-3b which is more hip hop but yeah go for it! have fun happy bass playing!

  • Thanks a lot bro! Just curious... do you play a four string or a five string... or do you play both?

  • I really enjoyed the ideas, it may take a little more than the 6 minutes of the video so that I can incorporate most of the ideas, there are some really interesting stuff.

    Thanks!

  • many thanksssss.

  • the background music is a little gay

  • lol

  • i love all your videos
