@TayouJin I wasn't putting the plane down, and I did hear that it was actually MORE switches that had to be flipped. The problem with that "old" configuration is pilot saturation. They become too absorbed with flipping switches while their adversary only has to hit a couple of buttons.

@TayouJin Not comparable. MIG 35 is a lot faster and better manueverable than F-15/16. I think it is a fair comparison to F-35 even tho F-35 is a 5th generation stealth fighter. F-22 is still the hardest hitter out there.

They did loose aircrafts, quite a few, that's absolutely true. But the dogfights were all won, meaning that the NVA did a tactical retreat or was completely defeated.

@jc005e Those mig that were shot down didn't have Zhuk AE and Irbis E radar with range of 200km and 400km and didn't have R 37 with range of 398km and R 77M1 -160km. F15 and F 16 has 120km of radar and AIM 120 with max range of 105km. Russians have R 37 with 398km and K 100 - more than 200km missiles. Migs with these missiles and radars would shot first and a chance to avoid these missiles is from 1-15%. None of this migs would be shot down if they had these toys.

Russian radar systems are antiques compared what to the US F-15 and 16's carry. Read up why India didn't pick the Mig 35 in MMRCA, and this is one of the reasons.

Today the USAF has MALD, jammers, etc, to defeat these systems. If you look at history, you will find that SAM kill have drastically gone down per sortie flown.

No one can destroy your SAM system if you know how to use it. Example Serbia 1999 (none of our Kub system or Neva were destroyed. Only one radar were destroyed nothing else). Iraq SAM crew was stupid because they turn all the radars on and waiting for your attack.

The quote I provided came from India's asessment of the fighters in the competition, which included the Mig 35,which came in dead last. @TheTequilaShooter As I know the S 400 radars are built with protection of jamming. Irbis E has great protection from jamming and that's smaller radar if we re comparing it with S 400 radar. I think that he pick up size of the object so flares can do only if the missile are enough close to the plane because in that case missile picks up information directly from the enemy plane and missile doesn't have that kind of system. I'm not sure for this. THAAD also has great jamming protection.

Being a SAM operator is a deadly place. I recall an interview of an Israeli pilot that said he would rather have any other job than a SAM operator as they have become easy targets. Not only do their radar emissions give them away but their high states of energy, which makes them easily detectable.

US didn't destroy any SAM in Serbia 1999 and you lost 2 aircraft (of 700 planes). 700planes didn't destroy any SAM for 78 days that means the operators are great and they know how to use SAM. If the SAM system can be easily detected NATO would destroy all the SAM systems in Serbia 1999. So your story is dead. And S400 can't jam planes but planes has low probability to jam their missiles.

As for the F-117 getting shot down, US commanders admited they screwed up. The F-117s took the same flight path at the same time at night for 4 days stragiht. It's not to difficult to know when and where an aircraft is going to be if you provide a predictable pattern.

As for what airplane gets chosen. It will have more to do with politics and convenience than which plane is better.
Out of all the planes, the Mig-35 and Eurofighter and F-18 are the best.
However, I think they will choose F-18 because US is trying to ally with India and because indians want ties with US. Even though Mig-35 is better and fits with mig-29.

Indian Defense procurement doctrine says it must go for the cheapest option which full fills your requirement and Mig-35 full fills all their requirement.

I want them to go for the Mig-35 because it will complement their existing mig-29 production lines and squadrons nicely.

@TayouJin I wasn't putting the plane down, and I did hear that it was actually MORE switches that had to be flipped. The problem with that "old" configuration is pilot saturation. They become too absorbed with flipping switches while their adversary only has to hit a couple of buttons.
The mig-35? Much improved. HOTAS system, and very formiddable.

@TayouJin Not comparable. MIG 35 is a lot faster and better manueverable than F-15/16. I think it is a fair comparison to F-35 even tho F-35 is a 5th generation stealth fighter. F-22 is still the hardest hitter out there.

This is why all the MIGS are not really WAR MACHINES.
Real war machines not only need to work on expos but also in real war scenarios when maintenance resources are under strain.

Its more the skill of the pilot than the aircraft, lads. You cant say that a guy in a MiG29 will win against an F16 simply because the aircraft is better, there are so many factors more.

@MrCptGonzo Not all the dogfights, the F4 phantom wasn't equipped with a gun at first, so they would often be shot down by tighter turning MIG-17's which used their 37mm cannons, and later on several Vietnamese pilots scored gun kills on F4E, and in Korea quite a few F-86 and F-80 were shot down by Russian aces

@jc005e Those mig that were shot down didn't have Zhuk AE and Irbis E radar with range of 200km and 400km and didn't have R 37 with range of 398km and R 77M1 -160km. F15 and F 16 has 120km of radar and AIM 120 with max range of 105km. Russians have R 37 with 398km and K 100 - more than 200km missiles. Migs with these missiles and radars would shot first and a chance to avoid these missiles is from 1-15%. None of this migs would be shot down if they had these toys.

Russian radar systems are antiques compared what to the US F-15 and 16's carry. While the F-15 and 16 air fleet is being modernized with AESA radar, Russia still is developing its, and still hasn't put it in service any fighters. Read up why India didn't pick the Mig 35 in MMRCA, and this is one of the reasons.

@Putin34000 There are many ways to defeat SAMS. Look at how the US used drones in the first gulf war to simulate aircraft. they overwhelmed SAM defenses. Today the USAF has MALD, jammers, etc, to defeat these systems. If you look at history, you will find that SAM kill have drastically gone down per sortie flown.

No one can destroy your SAM system if you know how to use it. Example Serbia 1999 (none of our Kub system or Neva were destroyed. Only one radar were destroyed nothing else). Iraq SAM crew was stupid because they turn all the radars on and waiting for your attack.

@TheTequilaShooter As I know the S 400 radars are built with protection of jamming. Irbis E has great protection from jamming and that's smaller radar if we re comparing it with S 400 radar. I think that he pick up size of the object so flares can do only if the missile are enough close to the plane because in that case missile picks up information directly from the enemy plane and missile doesn't have that kind of system. I'm not sure for this. THAAD also has great jamming protection.

Being a SAM operator is a deadly place. I recall an interview of an Israeli pilot that said he would rather have any other job than a SAM operator as they have become easy targets. Not only do their radar emissions give them away but their high states of energy, which makes them easily detectable.

US didn't destroy any SAM in Serbia 1999 and you lost 2 aircraft (of 700 planes). 700planes didn't destroy any SAM for 78 days that means the operators are great and they know how to use SAM. If the SAM system can be easily detected NATO would destroy all the SAM systems in Serbia 1999. So your story is dead. And S400 can't jam planes but planes has low probability to jam their missiles.

As for the F-117 getting shot down, US commanders admited they screwed up. The F-117s took the same flight path at the same time at night for 4 days stragiht. It's not to difficult to know when and where an aircraft is going to be if you provide a predictable pattern.

If we take technology and number advantage in this case then 2 planes destroyed (in flight, 15 NATO planes were destroyed on the ground in Tuzla) with loosing less than a 20 tanks and few armored vehicles and more than 50 planes (mostly mig21) destroyed is impressive. And F16 was shot down by very smart operating of SAM system.

During the Swiss simulation Hornet had an AWACS on it's side, and MiG did't. MiG also had Hornet locked on for a few seconds,and that's more the enough to fire the Archer and wipe out that Hornet from the sky, but no, it had to be a win for the west, so they decided MiG has to disengage. I would love to see Falcons, Eagles or Hornets go against MiG-35's now, with the newest radars, ECM's and weapons.. It's a loosing game !! Ok, I always say I might be wrong , but, let it happen and see the results. The main advantage of 35's in this case would be their ECM pod, there's nothing in the wourld that could even get close to it's jamming capabilities, and if jammed back for fireing BVR missiles, 9 or 35, never mind, would easily out-turn any western aircraft (except 29 can't OT F-22).

Everything spoken honestly, without any national proud, they speak about fights and what was on Western and what on Eastern (MiG-29 ) side. Not really... Defense sector is amazingly corrupt. Nearly 30% of defense budget lines their pockets before any weapons are procured.
As for what airplane gets chosen. It will have more to do with politics and convenience than which plane is better.
Out of all the planes, the Mig-35 and Eurofighter and F-18 are the best.
However, I think they will choose F-18 because US is trying to ally with India and because indians want ties with US. Even though Mig-35 is better and fits with mig-29.

God know how much % is eaten by govt officials and their middle men. I dont think they will go for F18s though. Its a carrier based fighter and I think no air force is using it. I think it would be eurofighter or Mig-35 but the eurofighter is a lot more costlier and is not a true value for money. Indian Defense procurement doctrine says it must go for the cheapest option which full fills your requirement and Mig-35 full fills all their requirement.

However, keep in mind India is trying to gain US favor and alliance and if it means buying some shitty F-18's then so be it. Even the Israelis are telling India to buy the F-18.
