  • What is the instrument playing the high-pitched solo? Is that a slide whistle or a "singing saw"?

  • Recorded on August 23, 1920, featuring Warren Luce soloing on the musical saw.

"Oh, yes, Elizabeth, of COURSE you may have another sandwich....as soon as Aunt Phoebe shuts off that goddamn music!"/"But I LIKE Paul Whiteman!"/"I dont' care if it's Pryor's Band!! SHUT THAT MACHIINE OFF!! I'm trying to relax!!".

  • Love it so much!!

  • Fredricmarch, Thank you. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

    Regards, J.

  • I have heard that the Victor 78 Wreck of the old 97 was also one of the first million selling records. Have you ever heard this? Sounds great.

    Thanks

  • Edisonphonographs, Yes Vernon Dalhart's Victor recording 'The Wreck of the Old 97' is also sometimes mentioned. Of course he re-recorded that electrically at the dawn of the Orthophonic era so both recordings are usually counted as one.

    Regards, J.

  • What year is your Victrola? I have a VVX from 1915. It only sounds right to play the songs on the "real thing" instead of mp3 or something.

  • DrKorn5, It's put away right now and I can't recall off the top of my head what year it dates to. It's a very early one, IIRC '21 or '22. I agree-there's nothing like listening to the real thing, acoustic reproduction is so very different than electric. Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for the kind words. Regards, J.

  • DrKorn5, I dug out the old VV-50 this morning. It's #5737 so it's a very early machine from the first part of 1921.

     Regards, J.

  • Somehow, I can picture this as being part of a picnic somewhere. A car with a rumble seat, deli sandwiches, glass bottles of soda pop, fresh fruit, and perhaps a Mason jar full of "preserves" (It WAS during Prohibition, no?).

  • MrUnidyne, Sounds perfect! Who's going to bring the 'preserves'? Ha Ha! I'm glad you enjoyed the clip, now that the warm weather is here again I'll be posting some more from the parks. Regards, J.

  • One of my favourite songs! Thanks!

  • DGatsby, Glady like it, it is one of the hallmarks of the Roaring Twenties! A very fun number. Thank you. Regards, J.

  • That is one beautiful song and one beautiful record player!!!

  • Shurayuki18481. Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm very glad you enjoyed it. Regards, J.

  • I never tire of that record...

  • It is a fun one isn't it! I'll have to do another clip of this inside sometime soon. Regards, J.
