When a device comes out and has features one likes, one tends to go for it. Then another comes out with the same features but with added features, and it is tempting to buy that too. I own an iphone an Archos 5, and a netbook. Greedy? Maybe but I use all 3 for different reasons and for the features each one provides. But for me I like gadgetry and I bought my Archos because I wanted to see the differences in the Android OS to the iphone OS, and as a gadget comsumer I like both :)
The camera is a god sent for me as well. I use it to take all my photos and videos.
As far as screen real estate is concerned, the Droid's sharp resolution allows me to read stuff that's really quite small, and the physical, slide-out keyboard leaves me the entire screen to use.
Tethering is still too expensive, AND it would never be fast enough for me.
Finally when I am at home I prefer using my computer.
Well MrBit10, I own a Droid, and I find it to be very useful when I'm on the go. I use the calendar, email. Messinging is useful when the person called is busy. I love being able to get on the internet any time to look up a word or a fact or catch the news. I also use it to read ebooks while trave and I'm not driving.
I don't really use my Droid to play games. The available games are either not interesting or get boring fast.
I think mobile devices will become as powerful as desktop devices. But powerful doesn't necessarily make them more functional or usable. And if you start getting in to that argument you start thinking about Keyboard & Mice computing vs. touchscreen. And I think Keyboard & Mice will be around for a while.
Tethering for all devices is not an option, at least today. I don't think the telco's networks are stable enough.
Tethering can be used on a Mac Pro, Dell, HP, Netbook or even an iPad if Apple allows it. There will indeed be hacks for theiPad.
This way you can surf the internet on your phone while at work or on the go and also connect it to your main PC and pay only one bill for both devices. I am single so tethering works great but buying a data pack for every family member would be much more expensive than a cable modem. Tethering will only work out great for a select few.
I guess I'm old school, all I care about with mobile devices is the phone. I do care about how the UI works, my Nokia phone is great, but it's terrible to navigate.
I was once like you mrbit ... why do people text each other? But that was a few years ago. I'm on who now expects a cell phone to have GPS, a camera, and an on screen keyboard that can play music.
I think portability i> screen size. As long as I can see the screen of course. If I can't fit it into my pocket, then to me it's not mobile. I don't consider netbooks mobile. I just think it's more convenient, but if I'm in a restaurant or a ball game lets say ... it has to fit in my pocket.
If I need a carrying case ... well ... I might as well just bring my laptop. And I don't concider a mp3 player and GPS fluff. Cause I just eliminated my Garmin and also I don't need to bring my iPod. The camera is nice because it allows me to look up bar codes and see if I can find something I'm trying to buy cheaper online, or another store.
Well with Android, GPS is free. It uses the GPS module with google maps. When the droid came out tom tom and garmin stocks fell. And for a good reason. Why pay for a device that is built into a phone that you already own? I sold my Garmin the week after getting the Droid.
It works well in my opinion. I actually like it better than the Garmin, cause it has traffic built in for free, unlike tom tom or Garmin. You have to pay 5 to 10 bucks a month for traffic.
I want a non-touch regular phone produced by Apple with an OS similar to the iPod Nano OS where you can deselect items from the main menu. That way i can give the the functions i need.
I am a bit like you MrBit, a phone was a phone, a watch was to tell the time not all the other stuff they can do now. I guess I just used to think things should be simple. Now we as a society expect our mobile devices to do everything and much more, they should be ready to do jobs in the future when new tech becomes available. I personally think that the mobile devices we are blessed with today are outstanding and I know many of the younger gen will call me an old fart lol. Awesome video mate
i like everything in one divice like a pda so i have everything fast at once an dits easy and most application in pda's are eady and straight forward mp3's are more advanced for these specific tasks and it has fetures you dont need plus you pay for an extra divice...
I'm a lower-price-range-mobile-gadget-lover. I demanded that a phone should be phone and nothing else. I'm more than happy with my 1st gen iPhone. The screen is great, the hardware is great, and I use all the features of the iPhone. I'm a geek, and a computing student and I don't need more than iPhone, in my mobile needs. I use it as a book reader, games, mail, safari, iPod, download manager, and sometimes taking photos. I only need a front facing camera(for skype) and I don't nothing else.
I wish PDAs are more popular. I wouldn't mind carrying a phone, a PDA, and a multimedia player. A phone is a phone and that's it's number one priority. everything else is just extra. I just have a plain phone for calling and text messages. The battery lasts me for 3-4 days without turning it off. My friends' iPhone, android, whatever... I see them charging it in the middle of the day. What if they played around with it all day, and need to call someone, but the iphone is out of juice?
Spread the pain around, and use dedicated devices I say. Phone to call and text, PDA for work on the go, and multimedia player for fun on the go.
Internet plans for mobile devices arn't much of a priority. I'd rather have wifi. Starbucks has wifi, Panera Bread has wifi (that's where I meet most of my clients), and I think McDonald's has free wifi now. That's free wifi on every corner. All I'd ever need mobile internet for is a bing search, or a quick wiki. That's good enough for anyone.
Youtube and Flash games are just extra stuff. Of course, if you NEED (not want) internet on the go, you wouldn't mind paying a little extra for internet everywhere.
no icall has stated they will make a 3g version, that is what i meant by apps, that most of all the wifi only apps will not make 3g as well. they were shut out by at&t before for no voip over 3g
VOIP can easily run over 3G, my home VOIP runs on wifi from other computers with no issue. there are other apps besides icall, like truevoice among others, since i have a jailbroken phone i can also use an app that fakes the 3g for wifi use thus blocking the sdk to use VOIP over 3G. It is not the best app, but it made calls.
I know VOIP can work of a 3G network. You can even use the Magicjack with 3G althoguh I do not consider the MagicJack a 3G app. I do not consider DreamWeaver a 3G app either yet it will work with PAM devices.
The point about AT&T is the lack of coverage. I have an ass kicking plan with Sprint but I have thought about switching to Verizon myself because of the 3G coverage. Your iCall may not work as good as you think it while on the go because of AT&T not 3G.
i cannot argue about ATT's shitty coverage, i know. up in brewer maine, hah forget it, my aunt lives up there. i stay pretty local to houston where it is good to go. how is sprint for you? I once had sprint a while back, no complaints. I have never been with Verizon though.
Sprint sucks hey? You might want to read up on 3G and data plans. Sprint is the only carrier that has 7:00 PM for any time minutes and the unlimted data plan for PAM devices. AT&T and Verizon had a 5 GB cap the last I knew. Beyond the 5GB you get charged per kilobyte unless they have changed that.
you know i read in a magazine that cell companies were bitching about data use. I wonder now that VOIP and other apps are allowed over 3G will AT&T up the cost, that would suck.
nah the ipad is the way need to be as for screen .. i use alot of time on the road and its perfect for me... screen i use alot of time with my iphone 32gb i have si much movies i do love it was a littel bigger so ipad FTW
