  • Poor Mar vin was tryna keep up with the band (they were playing entirely tooo fast) and Tammi was trying to sing at normal speed...and you can tell they kept getting thrown off beat but they still pulled it off none-the-less!

  • Absolutely lovely post! Thanks so much. As for those that have chosen to 'dislike' evidently do not have any appreciation for the great Marvin Gaye & beautiful Tammi Terrell

  • they looked so relaxed and chilling while producing those powerful voices...

  • just listen to them, such talent :')......does anyone else get bummed when some prissy old twit thinks that Diana Ross (no disrespect, love the supremes!) is the original?

  • it was live because you can even hear him snapping his fingers to the rhythm and if you have the 33 you do not hear any fingers snapping on it... its live

  • Thanks!!

  • Thank you sooooo much for keeping The KING alive!!!

  • Two great singers benefited from the best R&B song writers of that generation made music that is still great today. The brevity of their lives is a tragedy but they left a musical legacy to us all that will live for a very, very long time. Their is really nothing much better to be said for any artst.

  • If u watched "Unsung". U would have know that the stage did not collapse. She fainted in Marvin ' s arm while they were performing.

  • SkidRowJosephine. Really Negroes. U got to be at least 100yrs or more still saying Negro. Wow!!!!!

  • Great duet!! RIP Don.

  • Fine looking negros!

  • Why are they rushing the song? Did the show only allow so much time?

  • Fantastic !

  • yes she was. Way to young to lose her life in such a tragic way! Both her and Marvin were wonderful together. Then best duet of all time. Sad to see both lives lost so early.

  • Did any kind of criminal charges ever get brought up to James or David for this? If indeed this is the case of her death being due to beatings, i would think a report would have been made. I also wonder if she died due to both brain injury and also a tumor that was not diagnosed until it was too late for her.

  • I found it strange that Diana Ross wanted to cover this song. I also read somewhere that Tammi would have replaced Diana Ross after she left the Supremes if she (T.T.) had lived. IMO Diana would have had some tough competition had T.T. lived. She had the beauty, voice, and brains ( I read she once pursued medical school). She would have blown Motown up had she survived. The song went to the top the year T.T. passed on.

  • i agree with oboybfresh, Taraji would be great at playing Tammi

  • This clip begins with Johnny mentioning that the show's running 'behind schedule'. The band starts the intro while Tammi & Marvin are walking onstage - and the tune sounds fast. Marvin's going with it but just before Tammi sings she looks over to the band with a 'this tempo doesn't feel right' look (0:40)..however, they quickly settle into the tune.

In the choruses, though, they sound a bit like they're chasing the band.

I guess 'Pat' really had to get on the show..

  • @geoffreydlang Yea,I felt that too,& then kind of liked it. It had a jazzier feel, & should have been faster than the Motown, soulful version, but still, should have been a bit slower, even for that particular arrangement, which was prob. thrown together right before or during the show.. I didn't think of the time constraint issue. That makes sense now. Tammi seemed irritated or sad. So did Marvin. They showed a lot of class, imo, though. Bing ,bang,boom...k,bye.

  • For legal reasons I will not identify certain persons by name, but I can tell you that Tammi did not die from a brain tumor as reported. . My friend was a ny dj and partime Apollo emcee at the time and witnessed the "Godfather" beat her half to death back stage. Tammi never fully recovered and had repeated surgering to stop the sporadic bleeding and atrophy of her damaged brain tissue. The "handlers" covered up the beating and put out the brain tumor crap. Tammi was killed!!!!!!!!

  • @kevinpd99 Without a doubt, SHE WAS MURDERED!!!

  • @Red2001Rum SHE SURE WAS,...THANK YOU FOR YOUR BRAVENESS ...ALL TO MAKE ROOM FOR THAT BYTCH DIANA ROSS.

  • @kevinpd99 ...When I saw The Temptations movie when that scene came up when David Ruffin was confronted that they knew what was going on with Tammi. I didn't know if that was fact or not, but after seeing Unsung, it started with James Brown. he beat the mess out of her, then David. The said on the show that the beatings had nothing to do with that tumor, and that she's been having problems since she was younger. Please, you keep getting beat in the head, something will go wrong.

  • @kevinpd99 SHE WAS KILLED AND THIS SORTA SHIT HAPPENS TO THIS DAY CONCERNING OUR BLK SINGERS, ACTORS AND ATHLETES...SHE WAS A KID AND SHOULDA BEEN HANDLED WITH MUCH PROTECTION IN THAT SHADY ASS MOTOWN SCENE!

  • @kevinpd99 That's the way I heard it,too, but I thought that was a rumor, probably not then.. So,they were both killed. So many of our greats in every arena, get killed, taken from us.

  • @kevinpd99 Rubbish. Her brain tumor is well documented over a long period of time and any doctor will tell you that physical trauma and tumors have no relationship. If it did then surely all boxers would be riddled with tumors.

  • loook at my pic im a fuckin playa but i love me some TAMMI TERRELL

  • Hate to mention, but I believe this appearance on "The Tonight Show" may have been only days before the big stage collapse. The 10/13/1967 "The Tiger" student newspaper at Hampden-Sydney mentioned that "Tammi and Marvin come directly over from recent appearances on the "Tonight Show" and "The Joey Bishop Show" for its scheduled 10/14/67 concert performance. Sad, indeed!

  • @DudeTC811 what big stage collapse?

  • @muziklova220 The stage collapse (while performing) on 10/14/67 at Hampden-Sydney College that eventually lead to the discovery of her brain tumor.

  • @DudeTC811 oh wow. so sad!! she was clearly an amazing person...

  • Oh God, fifty-two years.... awesome!

  • I love the trumpet at 1:59! Tammi's voice is pure magic. I wish she had longer to make music like this

  • so sad that Tammi died at only 24 :'( Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and all those other singers then were superstars, Tammi was finally there, but wasn't that for a long time and people just seemed to forget about her :'''''(

  • best of duet!

    great!

  • @suportable Tammi would def be great being played by Tamala Jones. Taraji Henson would make a great Diana Ross

  • It's clear Tammi has powerful vocals. She has to hold back so as to not blow everyone out of the arena.

  • People really had to sing back then...no lip synching. Raw talent! I love Tammy Terrell...so cute and vivacious :)

  • tammi terrell had star power man

  • What in the name of god are the band doing here. They should be deeply ashamed. And shot.

  • for sure. They blow end out of the water. Wonderful vocals everytime with these two

  • Agree they suffer from lack of support here, but their vocal cordance overcomes it. What a tandem.

  • wtih the band, it kind of sounds like they were going for the Jazz sound, but it didn't work with this song. Marvin and Tammi both were wonderrful, but the band needed some help

  • Johnny Carson's head looks like that lowlife animal, George W. Bush. I just wanna throw my military combat Boots and hope he gets nailed in the FACE!

Tammi Terrell was really a stunning young beauty back then. I love her voice too.

  • @BrownSugar253 : Carson=Bush? So all white folks look the same to you? Goofy talk. As far as your combat boots, best get a grip on your 'office poog' anger. Us heavy combat vets know how to put our anger in the bottom drawer - where it belongs. Start making this world a better place by fixin whats broken - that takes blood, sweat, tears and heart.

  • @JakeRyan1968

I never said all you white people look like George Bush. But Carson has that facial similarity, in my opinion. It's obvious you have a very low reading comprehension. You should have used that GI Bill and re-educate yourself in some community college.

FYI, I'm no "office poog" like your fat Navy daddy. I'm an infantry man and a Ranger. I trained out in cold, rain or shine. I also graduated with a Bachelor and Masters degree, dumb-ass loser.

  • NOT LIP SYNCHED! Holy hell! I wish the backing was better.

  • @wildsmiley my mom said the same thing .The band is terrible! Berry must have been pissed off at the turn out on this, They couldnt get that motown sound right on this!

  • its funny to see how new they were at this time especially to white america thses people are ledgends, but what must remember this is 1967

  • superbe live.

  • It's a nice song!

  • Thanks for posting!! I've never seen them do this completely live, without lip-syncing. I Love It!!!

  • The one person that didn't like this is a fan of gay midget porn!!!

  • How could this performance fail to elicit a smile? Lovely in every way.

  • I love her...She is SO BEAUTIFUL

  • Tammi is gorgeous ! She looks fierce !

  • She looked like she would have been good fun to hang out with that touch of mischief in her eyes.

  • "You're all I need to get by" I really love this song. and entire thier singles my favorite songs too. However the films like a live tell us the best of thier singing lively and vividly. Of course Tammi is sooooooooooo cute. And Marvin is so gentle to her. Things those I see and listen their filmo and songs give me a "smile" and "confortable". Thanks to god to give us the greater talented singers like Tammi and Marvin.

  • Thank you for uploading this rare recording of them live....The Magnificent

    Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

  • Effortless

  • They look so slick & their singing, what a fantastic combo!

  • to you.. no to youuuu. ;D I love this.

  • Not one but two commercials play this song in the UK now. Am almost starting to like watching the commercials LOL :P

  • Could someone please find out where the Joey Bishop footage of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell is singing, Your Precious Love? I know it is out there somewhere. Lovers of Tammi and Marvin need to see this. I was too young to remember them singing together, and I want to see more footage. I refuse to give up or believe that none exist. Just like this just so happened to pop up, so will more. A movie will do while we fans wait. LOL!!!!!

  • Sensational. She was a force to reckon with

  • Thanks for posting this Marvin and Tammi had that chemistry that was magical and their voices blended so well together seeing them on Johnny Carson is a first for me because I was born in 1983 and it's great to see music like this

  • I don't know if it exists, but I would give my first born to see the performance of Diana Ross and the Supremes of "Somewhere" the night Martin Luther King was assassinated. Do you know if this is available?

  • So sad. Probably just a few weeks or days after this, Tammi collapsed onstage into Marvin's arms and later found out she had a brain tumor - one she died of about 2 1/2 years later. SO sad. She would have been a legend. She IS in my mind. I've read that she dated James Brown and he beat her and many think the blows to the head led to the tumor. RIP Tammi

  • @retrop75 -she had a brain tumor most of her life. She didn't find out about it until late in her life. She kept performing until the end. She dated James Brown & David Ruffin, & they did abuse her, but it wasn't a result of her brain tumor. She was a wonderful singer, & greatly missed.

  • @swright1104 What wasn't a result of her brain tumor, her being abused. No, I wouldn't think so,either. The abusers had their own problems & the abused, that is so difficult to place a judgement on one. It's bad enough that they were abused. Sometimes one could just be a kind & gentle person who finds them self frightened & stuck, between a rock & a hard place. Maybe if she lived longer & stabilized her fame, she could have overcome this. That's one interpretation, anyway. I still miss her.

  • thank u so much for this post of marvin and tammi...its rare to see clips of them performing live together so this a tru gem...keep it comin and thanx again

  • the best love the old stuff just great love the facial expression

  • the best love the old stuff just great love the facial expressional

  • the best love the old stuff just great

  • I love the way she does her lil dance moves. so cute

  • @TheDolphy3 yes she is cute, you know Diana Ros is animated when she dance/sing. Do you think Diane stole that from Tammy?

  • RIP Nick Ashford. What a gift!

  • RIP Nick Ashford who along with wife Valerie Simpson wrote this song.

  • Ok, who disliked this?

  • @Deedy06 It must be a deaf AND blind person. I hope it was just a clicking mistake.

  • Sooo Sexy !!

  • Rhianna is totally biting Tammi Terrell and she doesnt even know it

  • who thinks teraji p. henson would win an oscar playing her? i do

  • @oboybfresh I was thinking the exact thing. If not her maybe Trina could try out since she resembles her as well. But I think Teraji would be an excellant choice as long as it is someone who can appreciate such a singer.

  • @oboybfresh - DEFINITELY!!!!!!! In the movie I Can Do Bad All By Myself. Taraji P. Henson looks just like Tammi. The way she wore her hair she is a dead ringer for Tammi. When my 10 yr old son saw the movie, he was like Hey Mom, there's Tammi Terrell. I read where Taraji would love to play Tammi in a movie abt. her life.

  • @oboybfresh

Taraji does resemble Tammi and happens to have a bubbly, vivacious personality just like Tammi did, but she is a bit old to be playing Tammi. People often seem to forget that Tammi was only 24 when she died. Taraji is in her 40's. Taraji looks good, but does not look like she's in her 20's, so if they're gonna make a movie about Tammi and cast Taraji, they'd better do it soon.

  • @oboybfresh ...yes. Teraji would be the best actress the play her, and pretty much favor her. They always get actress who look nothing like the person.

  • I just watch the unsung doc on Tammie. All I can say is, I wish she had lived longer.

She was only 24 and on her way.

  • @ILuvMusic4real

Me too!!!! The only thing I can say is at least she is in a better place watching down over all us goofy fans. smile!

  • MARVIN GAYE AND TAMMY TERRELL!

Two great singers. They had a special chemistry together which made this Duet fun. Awesome and great! Marvin was already a

Motown great and Tammy became one!!

My Wish: The had lived longer and were still performing their great Duets! God Bless both Marvin and Tammy!

  • Wow...great...just imagine the racism they had to endure you can tell the crowd wasn't used to their type on this show just by the introduction smdh...

  • kinda seemed sweet & innocent back in the day

  • I must think about somebody.:-)

  • This is so sweet to watch. Thanks a million times for uploading. Such a beautiful Lady.

  • Ain't no "like button" enough to give this clip what it deserve.

  • @ruderkonge1976 Yes,there is. I clicked it. The Like button on You Tube is always right below the video,on the left. Hope you get to click it. You can get it shared & liked,+1'd, etc.,on a ton of sites.

  • She was 22.

  • omg...she must have been what 21 22...what a voice..she did outshine marvin..her voice...WOW!!!!!!...ced

  • What I especially like about this vid of them, is that in those days Motown acts' live performances were usually always so choreographed and set up like excerpts from Broadway shows -- here's a rare one where the Motown hit's starts, Tammi and Marvin, are just kind of ad-libbing and being themselves while giving a typically great performance. Thanks for posting again!

  • omg who been hiding this this is a classic

  • Remember this is a tonight show band playing behind them. Not the Funk Brothers.

  • The band put more pop & swing into it instead of that good ol SOUL!!! LOL Nevertheless marvin & tammi put it down! lol

  • the singing and song are awesome ... the band sucks though .... its not loud enough and its well kinda crappy... but it was the 60s too...

  • They were such a good musical match RIP Marvin & Tammi

  • This is the white washed made for television version. No need to wonder who "stole the soul," he's easily identifiable with this gig.

  • @memory1000 Do you think that there's any footage from their appearance on the Today show as well? I mean, if there are photos like there are from this one, there MUST footage out there somewhere right?

  • Pure Gold "Live" !

  • For some reason this just LACKED luster! But then again it was the 60's

  • @gene1536 Of course, it may have seemed to lack luster (did you define this word before you chose it?) Just curious. Well, Johnny Carson like a lot of hosts had bands that were pitiful. If I am not mistaken, groups had to use this joke, I mean band when they came to perform. The band was probably not bad but could only do certain music (limited talent) To see the light LOL!!! No one could do it like the Funk Brothers!!!!

  • @gene1536 Yeah cause Johnny house band just don't have the 'feel' of The Funk Brothers'.

  • Are there any performances of them singing "Your Precious Love"?

  • @Merv366 They performed "Your Precious Love" (and were interviewed) on The Joey Bishop Show around the same time they sung on the Tonight Show. After both shows (between Aug. & Oct. '67), they left to perform at the small college in Virginia where Tammi collapsed (not in Marvin's arms) but he caught her. I tried unsuccessfully to get a copy of the Joey Bishop performance but was told that it was possibly not recorded. I DON"T BELIEVE THIS AT ALL! I just believe it will somehow surface.

  • @memmory1000 It had to be recorded. That's bullshit. Just like Tammi's sister said Tammi and Marvin were on The Ed Sullivan show and a fan remembers seeing her and talking to her outside. 1968. She had already been diagnosed w/brain tumor and had at least one surgery. He remembers seeing her outside holding her head and looking like she wasn't feeling well.

  • i LOVED how Tammi grabbed Marvin's hand and gave him a look at 2:07. soo much chemistry, charisma, and talent. for two people who were just friends it sure looked like it was more then that. RIP my brotha and sista!

  • O God! He was a very beautiful, charismatic, and smart man.....and she was very cute and sweet....What a beautiful couple...How many emotions can give you a song!!! God bless you, Marvin and Tammi, forever....Thanks for this special moments....! R.i.p

  • precious. special. classic

  • TIMELESS NOTHING CAN MATCH THIS PURE TALENT!!!

  • Excellent performance, but the release of this is long overdue. About time!

  • Marvin and Tammi are divine . The tonight show band however are not up to Motown ......Slow sluggish and not tight ....listen to the original and see....

  • did you notice on the come up from the bow tammi looked like she was having a blood rush

  • TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Thank you!!!!!!!!!! Seeing this is like finding money to me. I have always wanted to see this performed live. I just happen to run across it while looking for something else. And I agree, Tammi is PHYNE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i love them tammi is so pretty

  • Now if we could get others to release clips that I know are out there, we Marvin and Tammi fans will be satisfied. Please, please make their faithful fans very happy!!!!

  • Thank you Tonight Show and Carson Entertainment. :)

  • Simply stunning in every sense.

  • despite the band...their voices ....are gold

  • Simply adored this! They definitely loved eachother! You can just tell! Thanks so much for this classic post! And...Btw, how much do we all miss Johnny? He was the BEST!

  • "I love her facial expressions!!" My thoughts exactly! Her personality is wonderful! So joyous! What a performer!! Only discovered her recently as she passed away before I was born. She's tremendous!

  • You know, I also love her facial expressions as she sing this song with the Great Marvin Gaye. I hate she passed so young, I am sure she would have gave us alot more of her unique talent in her singing if she had the chance to. I love both of them singing together. They may be deceased but they will always be known as the duet couple of Motown.

  • No plastic surgery ! and Tammi is splendid !

  • I love her facial expressions!!!<3

  • This Rare & beautiful! Love Marvin & Tammi!

  • Thank you so much! This is the first time I've seen any footage of Marvin and Tammi singing live together. So wonderful!!! Marvin looks so happy. They were perfect together.

  • Wow...a long awaited clip! Just marvelous. What a dynamic duo...oh how I miss them both!

  • For those of you who thought that there was no footage of M.G & T.T. here it is. I was not going to give up. Trust me, there is more footage from them somewhere out there. Cameras have been rolling way before the sixties and especially during the late sixties when these two were really going out performing. If I read correctly, they left this performance to go to Hampton where she collapsed while singing with Marvin in Oct. 67'.

  • I knew that there was footage from The Tonight Show & there is also some footage somewhere of these two on the Joey Bishop Show. If they sung another song or was interviewed on this show, please upload it as well. I know that I should be grateful for this, but I cannot help it, I want more from these two. Thank you!! You have made someone not feeling very well all better. I will keep tunning in for more, also I would love to see Minnie Riperton's footage from The Tonight Show as well.

  • Happy Birthday Marvin, you'll always be the greatest!

  • Happy Birthday Marvin, you'll always be the greatest!

  • Marvin suffered so much after Tammi's death--and so did I!! I still remember her!! She was so awesome and such a great talent.

  • This is super rare

  • its heart warming to see this two falling in love with each other. they can barly keep there eyes off of each other. they putted there love for each other in this song even if marvin was married and tammi was falling in love with a different guy. there was just something about them and this video that makes you feel the love for each other.

Start watching it at 1:35 to the end, watch tammi and the way she looks at marvin she definatly as feelings for him and he definatly has feelings for her.

  • @lmao8885

I totally agree, they are simply "MADE" for each other, personnally aswell as artistically. I read almost all available interviews and biographies of Marvin, and until the very end of his life, he always refers to here with the utmost compassion. I guess he never got away of he untimely death.

  • they do absolutely match up. they are in tune this is the best a duet can get. a measure for everyone.

  • Glad to see this clip finally!

  • Wonderfulwonderfulwonderful!

  • WOW,for years it was said that the first 10 years of Carson's Tonight show was gone do to some bonehead erasing the masters as a NBC cost cutting measure, but now to see something thought lost but now found and in pristine condition is absolutely breathtaking.

  • This is truly amazing! It is so great that there is actually live fotage of Marvin and Tammi performing! It's astounding that this hasn't been released before. These are two icons of the music world!

  • Marvin gaye and tammi terrell greatness!!

  • OMG!! I can't believe that I found this. I agree, who the HECK was sitting on this. I thought I'd have to write to NBC or whatever. I know that she was on TV so I was wondering why I could only find 2 videos of her and Marvin. She did a TV commerical when she first came to Motown. Was is that? I am so happy! I just LOVE Tammi!! Marvin too.

  • WOW!!!!

  • If you look in the Webster Dictionary under the word AWESOME you'll find this video.

It doesn't get any better than this and thank you Johnny Carson for having them on.

Something I'd never thought I'd ever see. Marvin & Tammy Live

  • By the way, dear Carson Entertainment Group: Thank you for posting all these Tonight Show clips. That's very kind of you, especially for all the Johnny Carson aficionados around here. But since you only tag this clip as being from the 1960s: This should be from late summer or early fall of 1967, since the "United" album was released on August 29, 1967. But I guess you have the precise date anyway in your database. Could you add it?

  • @Great2C We're so glad you like it. There's a lot more great stuff to come.

  • @johnnycarson: What's up with some Sam Cooke?

  • @Great2C I too would like to thank the Carson Entertainment Group for deciding to share a video that fans of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell have been longing to see. If you have any other footage hidden anywhere of these two, please, please, continue to make the public happy!!!!!

  • 37 "likes" and 0 "dislikes" so far. I guess that says it all. Sheer brillance and a piece of music and TV history!

  • Imagine how good they would have been in the 70's if she had lived? they would have given Roberta and Donny a run for their money

  • This is great! I always wanted to see this clip. I wonder if their performance from the Today Show with Hugh Downs is on the web somewhere.

  • BRILLIANT

  • wow, this was better than finding The Elgins on Swing Time, i wonder if The Supremes on Carson in 67 (Ballards last TV appearance) is on this cd set, i have that on VHS even the entire interview but its extremely distorted, Tammi was soooo beautiful, i love her eyes RIP Marvin & Tammi
