HOLY SH*T!!! I was expecting some really crappy playing, but you totally blew my mind!!!!! Great playing, great tone, and great amp! Marshall is and always will be #1 in my book.
@prabowoputra - Yes it is. While the Marsha doesn't have as many features as the JVM - it's simply the best sounding 'Marshall' type amp out there right now.
@Soldano88 - Hey man - how's it going? I the the last time we hung out was at The Baked Potato in North Hollywood to catch either Michael Landau or Jeff Kollman... (those guys are so good!) Actually I just got back to the UK yesterday after a very eventful 2 weeks in LA, OC, Vegas and New York (for the Amp show)... shoot me an email and let's keep in touch! I just picked up a new Les Paul which sounds ridiculous!
@WolfStatic I'm doing good bro but I forgot about seeing you at the baked potato since I was wasted that night lol! It was Jeff Kollman the man with Cosmo Squad! Yes we should hang out sometime or catch a show huh?Gibson makes some killer guitars! Would like to take some lessons from you sometime as well...!
Hey geat playing! I just have a quick question. When it comes to the Marshall JVM and the Splawn Quick Rod, which would you say has a smoother tone? The JVM seems more versitile but if the Quick Rod can produce a smoother tone I'd rather have that than all the extra stuff that the JVM offers.
@guitarchef91 Thanks for checking out the vid! To be honest - I hardly scratched the surface of the JVM's rich features. I do find with good high-gain amps, that there's always a trade-off between tone and features. The QuickRod has enough features to satisfy most players, while the JVM has it all! If you can do without the features and want to go for straight up tone - get the QuickRod. Make sure you get a good cab too. I recommend a Port City 2x12 Oversized with a pair of Scumbacks (M75 + H75)
Did you write those pieces starting on 1:50 an 2:44? If so, then I am SO jealous. Some of the most creative and refreshing playing I've heard in pretty much ever.
@DarkJinx257 - Thanks - I'm speechless! Yes, those are originals - the first one was a little bluegrass mish-mash I did for an exam at GIT, and the slow piece is called "Wild Canyon" on my upcoming record.... once again, much appreciated!
Marshall has the most obnoxious high-gain tone in the world... Diezel VH4 loaded with 6L6s owns any Marshall amp... Diezel Herbert delivers the metal like nothing you've ever heard... Mesa is better also... shit, what isn't better than a Marshall??
@squirttilithurts - First off, the Diezel Schmidt is by far one of the best amps I've ever played through. I prefer it to the VH4 and the Herbert for my kind of stuff.
Personally, I judge an amp based on the degree to which it enables me to perform what I set out to, both technically and stylistically. Beyond that it's down to personal taste.
So if Mesa, Diezel (& apparently every other brand out there) sound 'better' to you than all Marshalls in existence, then good for you -you're entitled!
@squirttilithurts It's all about taste...the taste for the in your face marshall tone has waned and has been replaced for the want of a smoother tone. It doesn't mean one is better than the other.
@inflames927 - Thanks! Yeah, I guess Marshall's aren't for everybody - I don't think I've ever heard them trashed that badly before though... after all, some of the best rock albums of all time had that classic Marshall roar! One of my favorite Marshall moments is the intro to AC/DC's "For Those About To Rock"... so original, refreshing and distinctively Marshall...
Are you running through any stomp boxes or does that JVM sound that good raw? I've been out of playing for about 15 years. :^( Just life, ya know? Played for about 20 years and, I've been really wanting to jump back in. I'm REALLY outta the loop on what's what, as far as equipment goes. You sound great! Bums me out big time that once upon a time I was not quite as good as you but, in the ballpark. Now.....hell, I'm nothing.
@Paynekillah - For this vid, I plugged straight into the amp, with no stomp boxes or post-effects. The amp just sounds great by itself and that's one of the things I wanted to show.
Hey thanks for the kind words man! I do think you are being a little hard on yourself though. In fact, you should be celebrating playing again, and return on a real high. I'm guessing that once you find your fingers - you'll come back a better and a wiser player than before! So go for it and have fun with it!
Thats is some inspiring friggin' playing, Who said desi's cant play guitar! (coming from a fellow d). I have a Gibson SG and a Fender mexistrat.Just ordered a Mesa Boogie Mark V combo and had been checking out youtube vids comparing the jvm's and the boogie 5. You got some great technique and riffs there and am going to save this vid to one of my favs. If you ever make a record or have some songs up, let me know so i can buy them!
@Kingnothing75 - Wow... thanks man... and a very happy new year to you, sir! The Mesa Mark V is a rockin' combo and you'll definitely dig it! Put up a vid or two when you get it! I'll definitely keep you posted on the record... I've decided to have it mixed and mastered in London, so that'll be cool... there's just something about British engineers!
Nice playing man, you're a very versatile player, I like the country vibe. And at the end you do something that kinda reminds me of the "Crossroads" duel..Cool!
@turboblues - Thanks man! Actually - The Crossroads duel is still one of my all-time favorite guitar jams even to this date... unbelievable that it was all done in '86 when Vai was in his mid-20's huh?... Vai has just set the bar so high it's crazy!
@hoodiey - Thanks for checking out the vid... actually, that's one of my originals - but like most compositions- it started out with straight up improv!
Hey! Great review! I bought a JVM since I wanted a versitile marshall amp. I have a little trouble deciding what cabinet to get, though. I am not a fan of new age metal, I like the vintage touch better. Can you give me some input on what marshall cabinet I should pick up?
@sinusspex - Cab-wise, it depends on what you're looking for... I had a Marshall 2x12, with G12T75s in it, which sounded great. If you want the full blown 4x12 sound, in a 2x12 package - you could go with the Bogner 2x12 (like I had in the vid), or better yet - get a Port City Oversized Wave cab, and load it with Scumbacks (H75 + M75 combo)... you'll never need another cab again for high gain! Let me know if you have any other questions... peace!
Ive already decided on the 410H, but I keep searching for new videos because I can listen to those tones ALL DAY LONG! It dig your playing a lot, I gotta check out your other 5 vids.
@IncisalEdges - Thanks man! Actually, check out the 2-channel versions of the JVM also...(esp. the 50-watt version) they sound great, and they're not overkill on the features either!
@JoeBerlinGuitar - Hey man - sorry to get back to you so late! It's an ascending major 7th arpeggio. Piece of cake - 6th string : 7th fret 8th fret, 5th string 7th fret - 10th fret. Do the same thing an octave higher on the 4th and 3rd strings, and again another octave higher on the 2nd and 1st string. Shoot me a message if you'd like a tab!
@rocketman987654321 - I guess you could wangle a good 'death' distortion out of it, but seriously man... check out the ENGL Fireball... that would be a better option... I swear, when I gave that thing a really good test at my studio, it almost kicked my ass back to England in one power chord! I'm going to try and do a video of it soon... but yeah, I'm still freaked out by it!
Hey bro, where do you live? If you are not too far...you could swing by and try the Shiva when I get it. One difference is that I ordered mine with EL34s.
@richedie - Hey man, I live in Orange County, CA... but yeah, I think if you're local... we should definitely put the amps through their paces at the local studio... shoot me an email if this is a viable option!
@FreewayBandTV1 - Hmmm good question. I think amp-wise the Orange Rockaverb will get that Goo Goo Dolls sound... pedalwise, look into the Suhr Riot pedal or the BB Preamp by XOTIC... they'll enhance an already good sounding tube amp with more gain, without compromising its original tone...
In listening to 'Naked' by Goo Goo Dolls, keep in mind that it is a very well produced track - so expect to get close and not necessarily spot on! Hope this helps...
Is this totally stock???? Man! I was looking at a Bogner or something similar but I am impressed! How is the feel? How about the power amp? Tranny, etc?
@richedie - Yes, this is totally stock... I have to say that this amp definitely holds its own even with the likes of the Bogner XTC. I'd probably go with the 205H, rather than the 410, as feature-wise, it's less overkill! The feel is pretty colossal and it definitely cleans up better than the XTC... The JVM has more of a 'raw' and aggressive type of gain where the XTC is a lot smoother in its profile. At stage volumes, however the XTC wins.
@richedie - Right on! The Shiva kicks BUTT, particularly at stage levels! Bogner did a hell of a job on the 20th Anniversary Shiva, particularly with the clean channel... please put up a clip or two on YT when you get it!
@gblaisg - Thanks for checking out the vid! Yes, getting paid is always nice :) Okay, The Bogner Over-sized 2x12 has Celestion Vintage 30's in it... great sounding cab! The best sounding speakers in my opinion are still the Scumback M75 and H75... check 'em out - I have them both in my Port City Wave OS 2x12 and they sound pretty wicked! i'm actually doing post-production on my newest vid... it should be up shortly... it has the Port City with Scumbacks in it - Lemme know what you think!
One of the best amplfier is the ENGL Raider 100. Maybe the JMV410 a bit stronger by the driving sounds, but no amplifier has the tonal clearnes and richness, that the Raider 100 have. Man can play country, r&r, olda rock, nu metal, and brutal metal with this amp. 100watt pure power, 4 channel, mid boost, and two separate master volume.=heaven.
does anyone know a similar type amp to the jvm i have a bugera v22 and a ibanez rg but not doing the van halen type distortion well at all almost no gain got a hot british pedal but too loose no tight distortion i want a jvm style sounding amp for under 700 dollars dont mind if used anyone know some amps
willl that get me a evh type tone i like the jvm because of eats clean distortion and not much hissing if i get rid of both it will get me about 500 bucks
1234 - You have to remember that EVH's tone is very elusive. The reason is because it's not just the amp - it's the guitars he uses, the pickups, his technique and most importantly - his fingers.
You might want to consider getting an Egnater Tweaker or a Rebel, and have it modded by David Friedman. That'll get you as close to EVH for that price range. I'm not sure what the mods cost for those amps - but you'll be more than satisfied.
Hey Beje0 - Thanks for checking out the vid! Okay... I use 500K pots on all my guitars, and I equip them with a 300K Cap and a 500pf Resistor. This allows me to roll off the guitar's volume, while retaining the highs and the lows. If you're going to go that route - call DiMarzio and get the Cap/Resistor kit from them, as they're the best.
The Singles in the vid were low output, however I replaced them with a DiMarzio Area '58 (neck) and a Dimarzio Area '67 (middle). They kick serious arse!
Hey Jackie... thanks for checking out the vid... well, I have to put my ENGL plans on hold for now, as I recently splashed out big bucks on my 50-watt Marsha and Port City Wave OS 2x12 Cab, loaded with Scumbacks... I still haven't quite gotten over the shock of how good that rig sounds!
I'm still on the lookout for a little combo / baby-sized rig, just not quite yet! I may even have Dave mod out a Marshall 2061X and run that with a Port City 1x12 with a Scumback M75... We'll see!
@WolfStatic Wolf - I know what you mean - so many amps, so little time and money. Which Engl were you considering previously? I've got a Sovereign 100 watt combo (1x12) and when I want a bigger sound, I run it into a Genz Benz, G-Flex cab with a pair of Vintage 30's. The Engl has a great clean tone and the distortion has lots of sustain and clarity. From what I heard of the JVM, it has a very decent clean tone and plenty of distortion on tap. BTW, nice job with the JCM800 reissue review.
Thanks Jackie! I was actually considering the ENGL Raider combo, which looks like a complete package in a single small unit. I think ENGL definitely make some of the best production amps out there currently. My favorite is still probably the ENGL Blackmore. So you run a G-Flex huh? Those cabs are killer - I ended up getting a Port City OS 2x12, with Scumbacks but I always loved the G-Flex's ported design! It's got some serious bass response!
The Raider looks pretty good and Engl finally changed their faceplate with that amp from mirrored chrome to matte black. It was difficult to see the settings in low light with the mirrored faceplate. Re: Blackmore, if only Ritchie would go back to his Deep Purple style and put the Taylor acoustic down for a while. : ) You're right about the G-Flex - major low end response !
The XTC 20th is one HELL of an amp! Tone Merchants have a 2-part demo of the XTC 20th so definitely check that out if you get a chance.
The XTC 20th to me, has more body and umph to the high gain sound, which makes it a better choice, particularly for live applications. The JVM, to me has more 'glass' to the tone, and is more responsive to volume roll-offs than the XTC.
The OD on the Marshall tends to be more raw and wild, while the XTC's is smoother. The XTC 20th also uses 6L6s not EL34s.
Thanks after11tv! Actually, I was blown away by the Mesa Roadster 2x12 combo... My buddy at GC introduced me to that amp and it absolutely kicked royal ASS!
Agreed. Ernie Ball guitars do rock! I kinda wish I still had that one. I'm down to 3 ESPs and 1 Charvel now - seems to work well for now - I just need to get that Suhr Classic T and I'll be all set!
Hey Gary - Thanks! The real trick for me to get that kind of tone on the shredding parts is to keep the gain just high enough to allow for those techniques. In other words start out by getting your gain to a nice crunch (not a blazing high-gain lead setting), so the amp is really open sounding. Then try your legato runs... work your gain up to the point where you can hear all the notes consistently. If you practice shredding with lower gain settings you'll encounter better tone and dynamics.
That being said Gary- I think on this vid, I recall starting at 50% on all EQs. Next I dropped the mids a touch, backed off on the treble and use the presence to get those highs back. The Resonance control on the JVM is KILLER... that really brings the thump of a 4x12 into a 2x12 cab. I just played a JVM the other day and yep, it still sounded as good as ever. Marshall have still 'got it' - esp. with their higher end line - particularly their Re-issues!
Wow you are so versitile. That's awsome. Who are your country influences? I'd love to learn some of that stuff. I love the Country Gritt stuff you played on the other video.
Thanks shredmn - I'd say my country/roots/rockabilly influences include Brian Setzer, Blues Saraceno, Carl Verheyen and of course Joe Bonamassa (who, for me is the best guitarist in the world).
As far as learning that stuff goes, definitely get into hybrid picking as it's such a versatile technique and definitely conducive to the dynamics you get on a good Marshall! I'm sure there are some neat vids out there on that - I'll talk to my buddy and try to recommend some! But thanks again...
When I saw Joe a few months ago, it looked like he was going into Marshall JCM800s (2205 or 2210 I'm guessing). He uses Carol Ann, the Marshall Silver Jubilee, (more recently a Bogner Ecstasy) among others.
Joe really teaches us that knowing how to dial in a good sound is more important than owning a top notch amp... Check out his slide performance on the Guitar Center session... type "Joe Bonamassa Slide" and it should come up!
Thanks a lot for answering and especially for the link. Tremendous. If you havn`t already -buy the live DVD Joe Bonamassa at the Royal albert hall it`s "QUITE" cool. The man is a genious. Keep posting those fine videos.
Think of it this way, the JVM series is an attempt by Marshall to nail all the historic sounds under one roof, while the JCM 800 2203 Reissue is a dedicated vintage amp designed to nail their popular flagship model of the 80's.
The JVM 210H or 205H should do the trick for all of the above except for certain Metallica sounds, like those on "And Justice For All" or the "Black Album".
Tonewise, I like the 800 better, but you'll have to drive it with a pedal to get the higher gain stuff.
Im looking forward to getting one of these with a 1960 Marshall cab..but..should i get the slanted one or the straoght one?.. Any suggestions? I'd aprecciate some suggestions :D By the way awesome playing man..just wonderful..
Thanks - To me they both sound great, and will do the job. In general, I like the sound of straight cabs better personally though... they tend to have more bass and less highs. I guess this is because they're off-axis to the ear.
i've not tried the JVM with the slant, and each amp does respond differently to different cab types. I'd try them out both (at stage volumes) and play sitting down, standing up and with different EQ settings.
Thanks Stormo - the combo does sound great, doesn't it? Okay, for the OD channels, i only have my gain typically set at 40%, treb all the way down bass at 50% and mids at 40%. I then use the Presence control to get my highs back. Presence for me works better in most cases because it's not as shrill as pre-amp eq (My JCM800 being an exception!). To add the thump, throw in the resonance to taste...
For the clean channel, I kinda like a little higher gain, that way I can roll it off to sparkle.
Not one for classic rock (and old-school shred), but that was very good dynamically and entertainment wise. I did enjoy the bluegrass sections more however.
You really push the amp and guitar to it's fullest capabilities. What kind of speakers do you have in the Bogner?
Thanks tookedeamon - The Bogner 2x12 had V30's in it and I have to say it was definitely a huge sounding cab! I'm using a Marshall 1936 2x12 loaded with G12T75's now, which works really well for me, with my JCM 800. Although I do miss my Bogner Ecstasy and the Cab - I just think that tonally, it's hard to beat the JCM800 with an SD-1 running into the front... I can't wait for my Marsha and ENGL which are both coming soon! Watch this space... Thanks again.
haiiyaman - Thanks... In the video it was the stock single coil that came with the guitar... I upgraded it after this vid to a DiMarzio Area '58 and wondrous things happened. If you want a true 50's sounding single-space pickup, WITHOUT the hum - look into that pickup.
LOL... Wow... you're the 2nd person to ask about the Sum 41 thing... i'm going to have to check them out now... (No, I'm not the guy)... Thanks for posting!
I just did a clinic at a GC in Arizona today, and I used a JVM 205-H... man, that thing sounded great! I used the OD channel, with the Amber setting. Gain at 40%, Bass at 50%, Treb at 50% and Mid at 40%. Resonance and Presence both at 40%... hope that helps!
LOL... Thanks...! Actually, I was at it again late last night on my new JCM 800 Re-issue video.. the best part is that I have to re-shoot because the levels were all off! Ugh!
Hey colmMICHAEL - Thank you so much... the song is actually an excerpt of one of mine called "Wild Canyon". The JVM did okay on this one, but really - it's nothing compared to how it sounds with my JCM800 Reissue, with a touch of extra gain, courtesy of my Axe-FX ULTRA.
I almost bought the JVM before I bought the Splawn. I am just trying to save someone from making the same mistake. The Splawn sounds like an amp your favorite players record with. It gets those sounds. The JVM is decent amp, but it can NOT hang with the Splawn; Marshall logo or not. A new Splawn Quick Rod will ship to your door for $1,850.00. That is less than the two channel JVM sells for, and it will beat the Marshall senseless all day long. I thank God that I came across Splawn amps.
Splawns are just Hot Rodded Marshall (and thats how they started their business), FJA mods do a fantastic JVM mod which i was lucky enough to play through and i can say, it'll beat Splawn senseless all day long!!!
Scott Splawn was one of the best around at modding Marshall amps when he still did mods. He has true gift in this area. People like Splawn, Bray & Cameron all do the Marshall thing amazingly well, & they all now make top notch amps of their own. I have been playing many years & my Splawn beats everything I have ever owned or played. I am glad to hear you dig your amp. I have seen some cool FJA clips, but my dream amp search is over. My Splawn can hang with anything Beck, Yngwie,Lynch or VH has.
Thanks! it's awesome you're getting one in a month... I think you'll really like the JVM! With some tweaking, it really rocks! Be sure to put up a video or two and let me know!
No, thank YOU... now I have to get off my arse and make some new vids! But first...! Tonight... I have to upgrade my iMac to 4GB, throw in Snow Leopard AND upgrade to Logic 9.. I'm so thrilled!
Is this an amp that sounds good on 'bedroom level'? I have a modded JCM 900 combo but it has to be quite loud to sound good and it isn't the best amp out there. And i'm looking to replace it in the future. Btw i don't gig.
Agreed. To be honest, I was never a big fan of 900's - the diode clipping just didn't do it for me. I've not heard any modded 900s, besides the clips on YT. If it's a variety of different sounds you're looking for, then the JVM will do the job for you. If you know the type of sound you're after then I always recommend going with an amp that does it best.
I only had the JVM for a short time, and don't have it anymore. I use a JCM800 2203XL Reissue, and I couldn't be happier with my tone.
It depends on the cab, and what you're looking for. I've always had good luck with 2x12s and the Marshall 1936 that I'm using now is just what the doc ordered! All other things being equal, 4x12's typically give you a tighter bass response than their 2x12 counterparts and give you that 'thump' more convincingly...
To answer your questio - yes there is a difference of course - BUT.. how big that difference is, is totally up to you, the cab and how well you dial things. I love the Marshall 1936!
Thanks mook! I agree... I'm going to start mic'ing from now on! Actually, I've been using Sennheiser 609's and a 906, and I'm getting much better results with them, than I ever did with my 57. Both great mics though.
Good Video! I've got the same AMP but with 30 years old 1960A cabinet with G12 80 Celestion speakers, and sounds really great. You can hear it at my profile and my band profile - ALLSIDE. Keep rocking!
what songs are you playing??

Nice playing man, you're a very versatile player, I like the country vibe. And at the end you do something that kinda reminds me of the "Crossroads" duel..Cool!
turboblues 1 year ago
@turboblues - Thanks man! Actually - The Crossroads duel is still one of my all-time favorite guitar jams even to this date... unbelievable that it was all done in '86 when Vai was in his mid-20's huh?... Vai has just set the bar so high it's crazy!

WolfStatic 1 year ago
Hey! Great review! I bought a JVM since I wanted a versitile marshall amp. I have a little trouble deciding what cabinet to get, though. I am not a fan of new age metal, I like the vintage touch better. Can you give me some input on what marshall cabinet I should pick up?
sinusspex 1 year ago
@sinusspex - Cab-wise, it depends on what you're looking for... I had a Marshall 2x12, with G12T75s in it, which sounded great. If you want the full blown 4x12 sound, in a 2x12 package - you could go with the Bogner 2x12 (like I had in the vid), or better yet - get a Port City Oversized Wave cab, and load it with Scumbacks (H75 + M75 combo)... you'll never need another cab again for high gain! Let me know if you have any other questions... peace!

rocketman987654321 1 year ago
@rocketman987654321 - I guess you could wangle a good 'death' distortion out of it, but seriously man... check out the ENGL Fireball... that would be a better option... I swear, when I gave that thing a really good test at my studio, it almost kicked my ass back to England in one power chord! I'm going to try and do a video of it soon... but yeah, I'm still freaked out by it!
WolfStatic 1 year ago
Hey bro, where do you live? If you are not too far...you could swing by and try the Shiva when I get it. One difference is that I ordered mine with EL34s.
richedie 1 year ago
@richedie - Hey man, I live in Orange County, CA... but yeah, I think if you're local... we should definitely put the amps through their paces at the local studio... shoot me an email if this is a viable option!
WolfStatic 1 year ago
@FreewayBandTV1 - Hmmm good question. I think amp-wise the Orange Rockaverb will get that Goo Goo Dolls sound... pedalwise, look into the Suhr Riot pedal or the BB Preamp by XOTIC... they'll enhance an already good sounding tube amp with more gain, without compromising its original tone...
In listening to 'Naked' by Goo Goo Dolls, keep in mind that it is a very well produced track - so expect to get close and not necessarily spot on! Hope this helps...
WolfStatic 1 year ago
Is this totally stock???? Man! I was looking at a Bogner or something similar but I am impressed! How is the feel? How about the power amp? Tranny, etc?
Good clean and effects loop?
richedie 1 year ago
@richedie - Yes, this is totally stock... I have to say that this amp definitely holds its own even with the likes of the Bogner XTC. I'd probably go with the 205H, rather than the 410, as feature-wise, it's less overkill! The feel is pretty colossal and it definitely cleans up better than the XTC... The JVM has more of a 'raw' and aggressive type of gain where the XTC is a lot smoother in its profile. At stage volumes, however the XTC wins.
WolfStatic 1 year ago
@WolfStatic - hey man, yep stage volume is key for me. I just ordered a 20th anniversary Shiva with EL34s.
richedie 1 year ago
@richedie - Right on! The Shiva kicks BUTT, particularly at stage levels! Bogner did a hell of a job on the 20th Anniversary Shiva, particularly with the clean channel... please put up a clip or two on YT when you get it!

gblaisg 1 year ago
@gblaisg - Thanks for checking out the vid! Yes, getting paid is always nice :) Okay, The Bogner Over-sized 2x12 has Celestion Vintage 30's in it... great sounding cab! The best sounding speakers in my opinion are still the Scumback M75 and H75... check 'em out - I have them both in my Port City Wave OS 2x12 and they sound pretty wicked! i'm actually doing post-production on my newest vid... it should be up shortly... it has the Port City with Scumbacks in it - Lemme know what you think!
WolfStatic 1 year ago
One of the best amplfier is the ENGL Raider 100. Maybe the JMV410 a bit stronger by the driving sounds, but no amplifier has the tonal clearnes and richness, that the Raider 100 have. Man can play country, r&r, olda rock, nu metal, and brutal metal with this amp. 100watt pure power, 4 channel, mid boost, and two separate master volume.=heaven.
soencoe1 1 year ago
@soencoe1 - Agreed. I'd have to say that the ENGL Raider is among the most versatile and bad-ass sounding combos on the market. How I wish I had one!
WolfStatic 1 year ago
does anyone know a similar type amp to the jvm i have a bugera v22 and a ibanez rg but not doing the van halen type distortion well at all almost no gain got a hot british pedal but too loose no tight distortion i want a jvm style sounding amp for under 700 dollars dont mind if used anyone know some amps
12345678ix 1 year ago
If it's deadly tone you want at a reasonable budget...
1. Get rid of the Bugera V22
2. Get rid of the ToneBone Hot British
That should get you $350 at the minimum.
1. Get an Egnater Tweaker Half-Stack ($650)
2. Get a Suhr RIOT pedal ($200)
3. If you have any money left over - drop a Scumback M75 or H75 into the Tweaker 1x12 cab... ($160)
That'll get you a wicked sounding rig, at comparable wattage to your Bugera. I'm guessing you'll out-do the JVM's high gain tone with that rig.
WolfStatic 1 year ago
willl that get me a evh type tone i like the jvm because of eats clean distortion and not much hissing if i get rid of both it will get me about 500 bucks
12345678ix 1 year ago
1234 - You have to remember that EVH's tone is very elusive. The reason is because it's not just the amp - it's the guitars he uses, the pickups, his technique and most importantly - his fingers.
You might want to consider getting an Egnater Tweaker or a Rebel, and have it modded by David Friedman. That'll get you as close to EVH for that price range. I'm not sure what the mods cost for those amps - but you'll be more than satisfied.
WolfStatic 1 year ago
Great tone dude! just wonderin if you might know the value of your pots? ....oh, and the single coil pickups... are they hot or average in output?
Beje0 2 years ago
Hey Beje0 - Thanks for checking out the vid! Okay... I use 500K pots on all my guitars, and I equip them with a 300K Cap and a 500pf Resistor. This allows me to roll off the guitar's volume, while retaining the highs and the lows. If you're going to go that route - call DiMarzio and get the Cap/Resistor kit from them, as they're the best.
The Singles in the vid were low output, however I replaced them with a DiMarzio Area '58 (neck) and a Dimarzio Area '67 (middle). They kick serious arse!
WolfStatic 2 years ago
Correction: That's 560 pico-farad capacitor...not 500!
WolfStatic 2 years ago
Great playing and tone ! Are you still thinking of getting an Engl amp ?
JackieMcGruffster 2 years ago
Hey Jackie... thanks for checking out the vid... well, I have to put my ENGL plans on hold for now, as I recently splashed out big bucks on my 50-watt Marsha and Port City Wave OS 2x12 Cab, loaded with Scumbacks... I still haven't quite gotten over the shock of how good that rig sounds!
I'm still on the lookout for a little combo / baby-sized rig, just not quite yet! I may even have Dave mod out a Marshall 2061X and run that with a Port City 1x12 with a Scumback M75... We'll see!
WolfStatic 2 years ago
@WolfStatic Wolf - I know what you mean - so many amps, so little time and money. Which Engl were you considering previously? I've got a Sovereign 100 watt combo (1x12) and when I want a bigger sound, I run it into a Genz Benz, G-Flex cab with a pair of Vintage 30's. The Engl has a great clean tone and the distortion has lots of sustain and clarity. From what I heard of the JVM, it has a very decent clean tone and plenty of distortion on tap. BTW, nice job with the JCM800 reissue review.
JackieMcGruffster 1 year ago
Thanks Jackie! I was actually considering the ENGL Raider combo, which looks like a complete package in a single small unit. I think ENGL definitely make some of the best production amps out there currently. My favorite is still probably the ENGL Blackmore. So you run a G-Flex huh? Those cabs are killer - I ended up getting a Port City OS 2x12, with Scumbacks but I always loved the G-Flex's ported design! It's got some serious bass response!
WolfStatic 1 year ago
The Raider looks pretty good and Engl finally changed their faceplate with that amp from mirrored chrome to matte black. It was difficult to see the settings in low light with the mirrored faceplate. Re: Blackmore, if only Ritchie would go back to his Deep Purple style and put the Taylor acoustic down for a while. : ) You're right about the G-Flex - major low end response !

WolfStatic 2 years ago
What is the difference in tone between this amp and the Bogner Ecstasy 20th Anniversary?
Alu122112211221 2 years ago
The XTC 20th is one HELL of an amp! Tone Merchants have a 2-part demo of the XTC 20th so definitely check that out if you get a chance.
The XTC 20th to me, has more body and umph to the high gain sound, which makes it a better choice, particularly for live applications. The JVM, to me has more 'glass' to the tone, and is more responsive to volume roll-offs than the XTC.
The OD on the Marshall tends to be more raw and wild, while the XTC's is smoother. The XTC 20th also uses 6L6s not EL34s.

WolfStatic 2 years ago
Hey, nice playing man Whats your settings on your shredding parts?
cheers
Gary182uk 2 years ago
Hey Gary - Thanks! The real trick for me to get that kind of tone on the shredding parts is to keep the gain just high enough to allow for those techniques. In other words start out by getting your gain to a nice crunch (not a blazing high-gain lead setting), so the amp is really open sounding. Then try your legato runs... work your gain up to the point where you can hear all the notes consistently. If you practice shredding with lower gain settings you'll encounter better tone and dynamics.
WolfStatic 2 years ago
That being said Gary- I think on this vid, I recall starting at 50% on all EQs. Next I dropped the mids a touch, backed off on the treble and use the presence to get those highs back. The Resonance control on the JVM is KILLER... that really brings the thump of a 4x12 into a 2x12 cab. I just played a JVM the other day and yep, it still sounded as good as ever. Marshall have still 'got it' - esp. with their higher end line - particularly their Re-issues!
i have a couple more amps coming soon..

Wow you are so versitile. That's awsome. Who are your country influences? I'd love to learn some of that stuff. I love the Country Gritt stuff you played on the other video.
shredmn 2 years ago
Thanks shredmn - I'd say my country/roots/rockabilly influences include Brian Setzer, Blues Saraceno, Carl Verheyen and of course Joe Bonamassa (who, for me is the best guitarist in the world).
As far as learning that stuff goes, definitely get into hybrid picking as it's such a versatile technique and definitely conducive to the dynamics you get on a good Marshall! I'm sure there are some neat vids out there on that - I'll talk to my buddy and try to recommend some! But thanks again...
WolfStatic 2 years ago
@WolfStatic
Couldn`t agree more on what you wrote about Joe Bonamassa! The best electric guitar player i have come across and i think i have seen the most.
Wonder which single amp gets one closest to Joe`s tone?
SimpleMind1 2 years ago
When I saw Joe a few months ago, it looked like he was going into Marshall JCM800s (2205 or 2210 I'm guessing). He uses Carol Ann, the Marshall Silver Jubilee, (more recently a Bogner Ecstasy) among others.
Joe really teaches us that knowing how to dial in a good sound is more important than owning a top notch amp... Check out his slide performance on the Guitar Center session... type "Joe Bonamassa Slide" and it should come up!
What a player!

WolfStatic 2 years ago
which amp would you recommend for Metallica, guns n' roses, led zeppelin, iron maiden and Zakk Wylde; JCM 800 2203 or JVM410h?
Alu122112211221 2 years ago
Think of it this way, the JVM series is an attempt by Marshall to nail all the historic sounds under one roof, while the JCM 800 2203 Reissue is a dedicated vintage amp designed to nail their popular flagship model of the 80's.
The JVM 210H or 205H should do the trick for all of the above except for certain Metallica sounds, like those on "And Justice For All" or the "Black Album".
Tonewise, I like the 800 better, but you'll have to drive it with a pedal to get the higher gain stuff.
WolfStatic 2 years ago
Im looking forward to getting one of these with a 1960 Marshall cab..but..should i get the slanted one or the straoght one?.. Any suggestions? I'd aprecciate some suggestions :D By the way awesome playing man..just wonderful..
Slasismyhero 2 years ago
Thanks - To me they both sound great, and will do the job. In general, I like the sound of straight cabs better personally though... they tend to have more bass and less highs. I guess this is because they're off-axis to the ear.
i've not tried the JVM with the slant, and each amp does respond differently to different cab types. I'd try them out both (at stage volumes) and play sitting down, standing up and with different EQ settings.
WolfStatic 2 years ago
great playing man.
i just got the jvm410 combo.
it sounds amazing but i'm having trouble finding the right sound. do you have some suggestions for the eq? i use mostly the clean and od2 channels .
StormoRider 2 years ago
Thanks Stormo - the combo does sound great, doesn't it? Okay, for the OD channels, i only have my gain typically set at 40%, treb all the way down bass at 50% and mids at 40%. I then use the Presence control to get my highs back. Presence for me works better in most cases because it's not as shrill as pre-amp eq (My JCM800 being an exception!). To add the thump, throw in the resonance to taste...
For the clean channel, I kinda like a little higher gain, that way I can roll it off to sparkle.
WolfStatic 2 years ago
i'l try the master controls.
thanks for the advice.

You really push the amp and guitar to it's fullest capabilities. What kind of speakers do you have in the Bogner?
tookedeamon 2 years ago
Thanks tookedeamon - The Bogner 2x12 had V30's in it and I have to say it was definitely a huge sounding cab! I'm using a Marshall 1936 2x12 loaded with G12T75's now, which works really well for me, with my JCM 800. Although I do miss my Bogner Ecstasy and the Cab - I just think that tonally, it's hard to beat the JCM800 with an SD-1 running into the front... I can't wait for my Marsha and ENGL which are both coming soon! Watch this space... Thanks again.

I thank God that I came across Splawn amps.
thebibleisalltrue 2 years ago
Splawns are just Hot Rodded Marshall (and thats how they started their business), FJA mods do a fantastic JVM mod which i was lucky enough to play through and i can say, it'll beat Splawn senseless all day long!!!
syxxsyxxsyxx 2 years ago
Scott Splawn was one of the best around at modding Marshall amps when he still did mods. He has true gift in this area. People like Splawn, Bray & Cameron all do the Marshall thing amazingly well, & they all now make top notch amps of their own. I have been playing many years & my Splawn beats everything I have ever owned or played. I am glad to hear you dig your amp. I have seen some cool FJA clips, but my dream amp search is over. My Splawn can hang with anything Beck, Yngwie,Lynch or VH has.

Nice tone and awesome playing!
I have a question for you:
Is this an amp that sounds good on 'bedroom level'? I have a modded JCM 900 combo but it has to be quite loud to sound good and it isn't the best amp out there. And i'm looking to replace it in the future. Btw i don't gig.
Do you still have the JVM btw?
tnx!
geertsakke 2 years ago
i have a jvm410h, and i can say: yes! sounds great on bedroom level, too! (but of course is louder better)
recell312 2 years ago

Is there a big diference betewen 2x12 cabs and 4x12 cabs?
1akez1 2 years ago
It depends on the cab, and what you're looking for. I've always had good luck with 2x12s and the Marshall 1936 that I'm using now is just what the doc ordered! All other things being equal, 4x12's typically give you a tighter bass response than their 2x12 counterparts and give you that 'thump' more convincingly...
To answer your questio - yes there is a difference of course - BUT.. how big that difference is, is totally up to you, the cab and how well you dial things. I love the Marshall 1936!
WolfStatic 2 years ago
This would be so much better with an SM57 on the cab. Great playing though!
