You have to look at the details of the 1924 law, because that law basically defined immigration from 1924 to 1965. From 1882 to 1924, the trend was toward excluding different Asian groups (Chinese and Japanese). I'd say that immigration law from around the 1850s to the 1960s were a kind of agglomeration of racism, eugenics, and religious bigotry rolled into one.

in 1794-1890 there were alot of people immigrating from other countries like germany, holland, ireland , ect. and those immigrats came through ellis island and were given an immigration test, that asked questions like what is the first ammendment and what is the capital of pennsylvania. but since they were immigrants many of them didnt do so well. they still got to come to america but many of them were cosidered unintelligent and were sterilized because of it.
America has one the most lenient immigration laws in comparison to most countries. I think it was New Zealand that didn't allow a british couple into the country because they were obese. TYT covered it.

Bachmann is an Idiot, I became a US citizen a little over 10 years ago and I had to pass a silly citizenship test, demonstrate that I wasn't a welfare sponge, and provide medical records. My parents had to do the same thing. Bachmann is a dumbass.
I'm an immigrant, when I applied for my green card I had to provide proof of immunizations and that I didn't carry any infectious diseases. I had to prove that I wouldn't become a tax burden, and if I want to be a citizen I have to learn American history to be able to take a test that most US citizens can't pass. This was in 2003. You have to look at the details of the 1924 law, because that law basically defined immigration from 1924 to 1965. From 1882 to 1924, the trend was toward excluding different Asian groups (Chinese and Japanese). I'd say that immigration law from around the 1850s to the 1960s were a kind of agglomeration of racism, eugenics, and religious bigotry rolled into one.

@platinumgirlful Yeah, it's impossible. It's like demonstrating one is not a spy, communist or has not killed anyone. Since innocence is impossible to demonstrate Bachmann not only made that up but clearly didn't even understand that such a demand would be impossible.
The Western system of justice espouses the principle "Innocent until proven guilty" for precisely this reason, but apparently Bachmann is not in line with the most basic principles of justice. Doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

in 1794-1890 there were alot of people immigrating from other countries like germany, holland, ireland , ect. and those immigrats came through ellis island and were given an immigration test, that asked questions like what is the first ammendment and what is the capital of pennsylvania. but since they were immigrants many of them didnt do so well. they still got to come to america but many of them were cosidered unintelligent and were sterilized because of it.

Bachmann is an Idiot, I became a US citizen a little over 10 years ago and I had to pass a silly citizenship test, demonstrate that I wasn't a welfare sponge, and provide medical records. My parents had to do the same thing. Bachmann is a dumbass.

I'm an immigrant, when I applied for my green card I had to provide proof of immunizations and that I didn't carry any infectious diseases. I had to prove that I wouldn't become a tax burden, and if I want to be a citizen I have to learn American history to be able to take a test that most US citizens can't pass. This was in 2003. Pretty sure Bachmann knows nothing about anything she talks about

white canadians and australians come up with stupid tests for immigrants too and when i hear one fo them say this (I am indian moved to canada when young) i tell them apply the test to citizens too and fine all citizens who fail and take away their right to vote. there is no way an immigrant will fail any citizenship test as it is too important.

I hate to admit it, but Cenk's wrong here. What Bachmann described is EXACTLY what we have in place right now. So she's asking for something that's already in place, which is something she's done in the past in congress.

Everyone has their views and while i respect them my views are just different. i say yes to those who legally are here and or are trying to gain citizenship. in a way it's kinda sad the way that they'll actually know more about american history then those who are actually born here. let me tell you this though. everytime i've gone out shopping it isn't a mexican at the corner wanting a handout, it's usually a white guy or girl, hell i've seen a man bring a baby in crazy heat & that's crazy!
