  • Thanks for the great vid. I shoot BIFs a lot, and it's always nice to learn from other like-minded enthusiasts! Love your kids too!

  • @RX350Sport Thanks for stopping by!

  • I have been working my way through your videos on You Tube & would like to say how much I have enjoyed them. The attention you give to the boys during what can be a nerve racking time gives you credit. I know from my own experience a laid back approach normally gets the photo. I have a 7D & just love it for this sort of work. Well done.

  • @alwayschiming Thanks for watching and commenting. Continued feedback is appreciated as you make your way through my channel. =) -Colin

  • Great vid man & nice shots . will check out your other vids

  • @3000KJH We have a bunch of them up! Thanks for watching

  • Best part of the video? Hangin with your boys! I really enjoyed this video and how you explained what you were doing.

  • i need one of those flash. is the beam everywhere in front of the camera or is it on a small point?

  • Wow, seeing the weather and overcast, I though the shots would be ruined but they are beautiful in color and sharpness!

  • @AnalogCaliga Make you're own light with the flash. =) Thanks!

  • Great shots!

    Which flash are you using?

  • @stevehendrickson 580exII

  • great. ! well done and cute kids youve got :)

  • military pays really good

  • Nice job looks like you got some nice shots. Thanks for sharing.

  • just beautiful!!! exactly why i want one of them :)

  • thats amazing

  • NOOO DONT SHOOT BLUEBIRDS... oh you meant photographing xD

  • maybe it's different for bird photography but overcast days cast great light for portrait and wedding photography. interesting.

  • here is a tip... be further away .... and leave the kids at home... it works.. it really does ;0)

  • @jammapcb Check my other videos and you'll see that I do just that.

  • @flecktonesrock sure will... that photo at the end is nice... but I usually use 1/1000+ for such fast birds.... a sunny day does help and a 5d/7d.... I prefer the 7d for the fast 8fps... capture at least twice the moments then... anyway keep them coming helps everyone into this type of photography.

  • nice pix man

  • @7:03 'the male's a little quicker, he's pretty much in'n'out' ;]]

so it happens to birds too

    ** high skill hobby

  • hahahaha that kid is soooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm 14 and I used this lens for 3 hours yesterday at a airshow. Simply amazing.

  • Awesome man!!

  • Indeed a nice setup. I shot lots of birds and video's with my 7d and ef 100-400 combo. Search gor Gipukan and you'll find some. P.s. I build my own gimbal head. Works on my tri-and mono manfrotto's :)

  • @gipukan Impressive- building your own?

  • @gipukan - Would love to hear about how you built your version of the gimbal head. What it looks like, etc. I like to see people come up with substute ideas for great products that are on the market.

  • What's the flash diffuser? Have been looking for something like that

  • @ThePhotory It's a magnifier- a Better Beamer.

  • Amazing work my friend!! didnt get the reason for your custom settings though... if you are shooting manual why do you still need them?

    THanks

    Allen

  • @bbq4smoke Different ISO/shutter settings for perched vs. flight shots. If I have both settings registered in the camera, I can switch between them quickly with a single click of the mode dial switch.

  • Great informative video, Thanks!!!!

  • @kalistalabuan Thanks for watching!

  • Ur kid is so so so so so adorable hahahahahaha nice vid enjoyed it, thumbs up:) love ur setup too!!!

  • Nice work, most haven't a clue the skill and patients it takes to successfully achieve well rounded wildlife photos. I actually like when I'm able to blow out the background to black mat and pull in the subject. Nice shots, I'm just now starting to use flash more on wildlife. Normally I shoot all manual as well and never unless super bright out do I use flash but it appears to yield nice results. Thanks

  • @CAJUNNSC Thanks for stopping by!

  • @CAJUNNSC How do you blow out the background and make it black.

  • @1jtrippy Adjust your settings so that the flash is the only source of light. Everything not illuminated by the flash will remain black.

  • Great video. Thanks for allowing us to see your setup for shooting the BlueBirds. Could you please give us a list of the inventory used that day? Thanks

  • @w1ljmm 7D, 500mm, 580 EX II, Better Beamer, remote. That's the major stuff.

  • @flecktonesrock Thanks for replying. I was interested in the Better Beamer which I will start researching. I was also interested in the mount that your 7d is attached to. Please tell me what the make/model of it is, and your thoughts (pro's and con's) are of it.

  • @w1ljmm It's a Manfrotto/Bogen 393 head. They're nice, stable....etc. But they are cumbersome. You can buy it if you want. =) I upgraded to a Gimbal head awhile back.

  • Dude, you need to work for Nat Geo. You really know your stuff!

  • @THSimagery I just emailed then our latest and best video. We'll see what happens. haha.....nothing I'm sure. Thanks!

  • awesome awesome work... that is dedication... phew... as on today... 5 people dont understand photography! :P :D

  • @droidari This video has more dislikes than all my stuff combined. LOL 40,000 views isn't bad though. =)

  • @flecktonesrock Not bad atall... i have not seen any videos as informative as this... or even being close to this work... thanks a lot for sharing! :) cheers!

  • hahaha kids was distructing me all the time!

  • Great Video! thanks for the tips I've been trying to shoot birds in flight for a while but never get it quite right, especially for smaller birds. What's attached to your flash? Thanks again.

  • @ynwared1 It's called a better beamer.

  • very impressive video..great pictures! i can't believe how perfectly your idea worked. thanks for sharing. cute kids, btw :)

i love shooting with 7d..if you get a chance look at the two videos i've uploaded.

    happy shooting!

  • @anaytarnekar Thanks for watching and for the kind words!

  • Cool kids yo.

I wish I had kids to bring me lemonade when I'm doing photography :(

  • @Anton338 I'm normally not in a place where the kids can come along. =)

  • @flecktonesrock its cool! bring them along more often. :)

  • Great photos, keep up the great work. It would be great to see some more bird and wildlife vids. Hope you manage to get a Wimberley gimble head. I use one and it really helps with large lenses.

  • @wadermanuk I picked up an Induro Gimbal a couple months ago. I love it!

  • Thanks for a GREAT upload. I appreciate your creativity in building the perch, your patience with the kids and for sharing your settings. U DA MAN!

  • @kissesincharleston Thanks a lot! You in Charleston, SC?

  • Great technique

  • @birdsculptures Thanks for stopping by!

  • what a dream place to live mate! i had to say!

  • @Aerolipe111 Thanks for viewing!

  • @flecktonesrock Where about is it?

  • @Aerolipe111 I live in South Carolina...

  • is that a fresnel lens thing on your lens? where did you get it from?

  • @huskykhtam sorry i mean *on your flash*

  • @huskykhtam It's called a Better Beamer.

  • beautiful pictures.

  • I would like to commend you first and formost on what seems your endless amount of patience and love for your youngsters...they'll be looking at these clips when you and I are long gone and their will be good memories....of course I love all the tech talk on photography as well but I'm sure you can appreciate how insignificant the later really is in life...thank you for sharing...

  • @tscholent I enjoyed reading your comment...thanks!

  • It's like fishing, lot's of waiting.

  • so do you now that you can make a slideshou of the blue busrd and showit to us HELLOW donde esta el BLU BURD ESE.

  • I get weird looks also sometimes when I photograph reflections in puddles showing cityscapes.... People are like 'Why are you photographing a puddle, that's just weird!' Then I show them the image and they are like.... 'Aaaaahh....' And in their mind I'm sure they're still going 'Your still weird dude!' LOL

  • @renebruunphoto I guess that would look funny....keep shooting!

  • Almost 32,000 views- my most popular by far! Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • tack sharp! nice shooting sir

  • @123456789longboard Thank you sir!

  • 0:01, SHOOTING BLUE BIRDS!!! :'o

  • Great video, I loved the line 'Look, there is the mailbox photographer...' Don't worry, sometimes idiots don't have a clue!

  • @renebruunphoto I got a LOT of weird looks..=)

  • people said the name of the game is patients, and you got it bro if it wasn't for your kids i assume, you'll be done before anything, great fantastic pics by the way. God bless.

  • @elduque3311 Thanks a lot!

  • great mix

  • @robel6y Thanks for stopping by!

  • Great pics and cute kids! Where did you get your camo covering on the lens? I like the canon lenses but the white sticks out if you're in the woods.

  • @wagz900 You can buy "Lenscoat" for most lenses and places like BandH Photo. Thanks for watching!

  • @flecktonesrock I'm jelly thats my dream birding camera

  • @fuzzymonkey79 It's a good one!! So good I've picked up a second one since this video.

  • wow... amazing...

  • they're amazing photos!

  • @gagsterde Thanks so much!

  • are you a Marine?

  • @gagsterde No, I used to be in the Navy

  • @flecktonesrock I was kinda close, I just wondered because of your haircut

  • Great video and useful wild-life info too. Shall subscribe to see what else you have come up with. Thanks for posting.

  • I drop by at times to see if you have any new vids which I always enjoy. I have the same setup minus the 500mm...though that's next on the list. Anyhow, I think your pics speak for themselves and I tip my hat to a great talent. Keep up the great work my friend!

  • @marekeos Check out our newest Sparkleberry video if you haven't! Thanks for the kind words! We appreciate it.

  • Beautiful shots that matie.!

  • ABSOLUTELY wonderful to watch.... a good teacher to your little guy as well

  • nice one

  • Very impressed. Ii thought it was gonna be another dumb video but was pleasantly surprised. Screw whoever looks at you strange, ppl are really sick. The ones that think photography is a strange hobby are the Wierdos. Awesome pics!!!

  • @YIMMA996TT Thanks for watching! We have another video coming up in a day or so.

  • fantastic video! , What flash are you using? thanks :)

  • @payndew Canon's 580 EX II

  • Wait, nevermind. Stupid question, you were shooting wide open.

  • Were you using a TC?

  • Wow nice! Is that your Job or just a Hobby?

  • @TheARTnSTUFF Hobby. Thanks for stopping by and for the kinds words.

  • Great shots. grats :)

  • Great shots.

  • How far were u from the perch? One of the best videos I have seen showing a setup enc(others is from Allan Murphy).Keep up the good work.Cant wait to see a version 2 of this....But why did u choose 1/4000 for the pics in the video?1/2500 or so will suffice I have found.By going down u can increase your aperture to get more DOF.Great stuff though.

  • @Rooivalkable The distance was a little more than the width of the driveway. I had two settings as I stated in the video- one was a shutter speed for flight, faster is better with these little guys, and the other for perched. If I was shooting perched birds with a 1/4000 shutter than it's because I used the wrong setting. The image that one the contest was taken at 1/500 sec at f/4 of a perched bluebird. f/4 was used to keep the neighbors' garage doors from showing through the trees in the BG.

  • Thanks for replying. With high speed sync u loose alot of range.Thats why I asked what your range was and also to know the Dof(want to etup such perch too...)I understand now why u used F4(to not show the garage door)Would love to see a video of u making setups enc.Would be hugely popular too.Yes from the video I learned u use C1 and C2 custom settings.I tried that but when I dial my knob to C2 for example I loose my setting that was saved, why?I am using a Canon 50D.

  • @flecktonesrock hanks for replying. With high speed sync u loose alot of range.Thats why I asked what your range was and also to know the Dof(want to setup such perch too...)I understand now why u used F4(to not show the garage door)Would love to see a video of u making setups enc.Would be hugely popular too.Yes from the video I learned u use C1 and C2 custom settings.I tried that but when I dial my knob to C2 for example from C1,I loose my setting that was saved, why?I am using a Canon 50D.

  • @Rooivalkable Yes, you do lose range, but that's where the Better Beamer comes in. I am not sure what problem you're describing. Are you saying the camera won't memorize settings assigned to the C2 function?

  • @flecktonesrock Yes thats what I meant. When I save custom settings on C2 for example and go to C1 my settings is being reset on C2.Then I have to start all over again. It is really annoying. So my camera actually dont memorize my settings.Whenever I switch to another setting C1 or C2 my camera ''forgets'' what settings was saved. Can u help?

  • @Rooivalkable Can you describe to me exactly how you are registering your settings for C1 and C2?

  • @flecktonesrock I usually select my setting beforehand like I want it to be saved. Then I go to Menu and select Camera User setting and press SET.I select REGISTER.I turn the left wheel to Select my position ex C1 and press SET.A confirmation dialogue appear and I press OK and SET.Now its set.Keep in mind this is like its described in the Canon 50D manual(which I follow)page 186.Easy but when I go from C1 to C2(another custom setting saved)in the field it ''forgets'' what was saved on C2.

  • @Rooivalkable This is puzzling. Sounds like you're doing everything correctly, as long as you're scrolling down and saving everything to C2 like you are to C1. Sorry, I don't know if you are doing something wrong, or if there is a software glitch. Both seem highly unlikely though.

  • @Rooivalkable Also, I am in no way trying to compete with Allan. =)

  • how do you use flash in bird photography? TTL or manual? or other?

  • @FinlandApollo I use E-TTL, but you have to watch it with the better beamer (flash extender) mounted on the flash. I'm frequently using flash eV compensation to harness the flash output.

  • @flecktonesrock I'm using better beamer too, but often when I use TTL mode, the picture is way too too bright. I usually use -1½ or -2 but it doesn't help. I try to pop the bird out from the wood but the whole wood is white and I can just see the bird, but its almost white too...Advices?

  • @FinlandApollo Sometimes people forget to switch their flash to hi speed sync. If you don't do this, your shutter is limited to 1/250 of a second, which is too bright for most outdoor applications. In this case, the camera will over expose severely, which is what you described. Set your flash to high speed sync to enable shutter speeds over 1/250 of a second and see if that helps.

  • Great Video. I just looked on your pbase website and cant see the results of the bluebird photoshoot.. Nice pics you have taken tho.

  • @rectify2003 When you go to my site, it's in the "Avian"' gallery. Thanks for watching!

  • oh my god!!!! that was amazing!!!!! great job!!!,and with the kids too,i could never do that, props man, greats job

  • @cugglester Thanks for the enthusiasm! Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Did you have your 7D in manual focus for a few shots? like when they came flying in? Thanks. Views have really jumped since the last time I watched this, Awesome, keep it up.

  • @BigCatsWildlife Yes, I would be manually focused on an assumed flight path for some of the flight shots. Thanks!

  • Absolutely amazing. Really inspiring, and really nice to see someone taking their time to get a really good shot. Well done.

  • wow!!

  • Hahaha your kid's expressions are so funny and cute.

  • Teaching the little fella's early =)

  • good job. who makes your flash diffuser?

  • @Gspsx It's not a diffuser, it's an extender made by Better Beamer.

  • what an informative and inspiring video! i "favorited" it right away. :-)

  • @hithereimdan2 Thanks for stopping by!

  • awesome shots!

  • :DYour son or you read Scott Kelby right? :D

  • who on earth are the two people that "disliked" this video, and why?

  • very nice video..

  • @jakal1591 Thanks! The views keep going up on this one. I have no idea why...LOL

  • @flecktonesrock The reason i like this video so much is because you took some fantastic shots outside your home in the street, but when you post the pictures they look so natural you could of been in the countryside!

You worked hard spent the time waiting and also made sure you had the camera settings spot on with

(C-Modes)etc so when the time came you captured those beautiful images!

You put a lot of thought into those awesome pictures (Grats)....
