I don't understand. If you were to say, model for games or animation, then why would you bother with a base mesh outside of Zbrush? You're just going to have to retopo the whole thing anyway, so why worry about edge-loops?
I totally agree, I would much rather build my base in Maya. I think it gives you much greater control over your edge flow, than with using the ZSphere armature. Even with the new skinning methods in 3.5, I would rather build my base in Maya, and then bring it into ZBrush for detailing and polypainting. Plus I think it gives you a greater level of control when you want to model to reference images
