Tanker 12, the oldest P2V now in Neptune Aviation's fleet. Fire was in 1991 on the Yavapai Cliffs, west of Grand Canyon. Back then, the airplane was owned by Black Hills Aviation of Alamogordo, NM. Carl Dolbeare was the pilot. he was killed in the crash of T-99 in 2003. I was co-pilot in my second season.
Jets are used for take-off nad climb and they are shut down until the drop. They burn a lot of gas. They are also used if you have to shut down a recip engine.
