This video just answered questions I've been trying to figure out for about 3 months. Thanks SO much! Is that filler the same as cab-o-sil? I've got some of that around, which would save me buying more supplies. ;)
good video, however if I may get picky, this is not a 'gelcoast' fibreglass. You can actually buy gelcoat which is thicker , thixotropic, and doesn't run like the regular resin. It is specifically for your initial coat. If you add more fumed silica to your resin it would be better at holding the vertical wall. Mix enough in so it turns into a pastle, then brush it on.
@Dach101 Yeah it's not true gel coat, but it's a cheap alternative that accomplishes essentially the same thing. These videos were not shot with any sort of pre-written dialogue, so please understand that everything I was saying was on the fly.
@2storyprops no problem, just wanted to make peeps aware that there is actual "gelcoat" always good to get an alternative though, also using fumed silica like you do gives a nice smooth finish and makes the resin go further :) keep the videos coming
Where did you get the powder to mix with the fiberglass resin? I've been to every auto body place in my area and no one carries it or knows what I'm talking about.
@microwavabletofoo you can get this also under the name cab-o-sil , try smoothon or other places that supply silicone rubbers. Be careful to use a mask while using it, it is very fine and can easily float into the air, you DO NOT want it in your lungs. Also known as "fumed silica"
@microwavabletofoo Definitely wear a mask! In another video, I explain that you definitely don't want any of this stuff getting into your lungs, and I show the respirator that I usually use. For the videos, though, I went without the respirator so that you could hear me. I don't have any fancy camera and mic equipment, so if I did have my respirator on, you would only hear "mmmm mmm mmm mmmmm mmm." ;) Safety first!
@pr4wn5tar silicone has a natural release, you can use a spray wax, which helps extend the life of the mold. Best to spray a quick wax but not essential
