@3:18 probably the best chord in this song, so rich and melodic and it fits right into this beautiful piece and just lifts your spirit and places it into a realm of perfection, somethin on Mischa could acheive
"I never play for musical connoisseurs because they don't need me. They can appreciate music just by looking at the score. I play for the people who may be listening to a piece for the first time in their lives and I try to express as much as I can and as strongly as I can in an effort to help them appreciate at least a large part of the piece."
I love how he takes the time to play this wonderful piece, it gives me the pleasure of taking the time to listen to this wonderful music, and the delicate, simple, mastered notes allows me to bask in thoughts such as beauty, sadness, tranquility, love, passion, and life's simple joy.
if only music stayed this way, life would be a whole lot different...
While I do not really like romantic interpretations of baroque pieces - I feel that solo pieces are the obvious exception. When somebody performs something as beautiful as this, it needs as much expression as possible. And I highly doubt that people in the baroque ages, did not perform in this fashion.
@Samoriah The thing about solos, you can play them at whatever tempo you wish, it's your solo, as long as the notes are correct you can change the tempo, if he wanted to play this at 250 bpm, he cloud have, so I agree with you/
Funny how so many people see images hearing this piece. Making images appear in the listener's mind through music: that is the epitome of musical brilliance and this piece is a veritable proof of that.
I have personally seen a music sheet for this piece and this interpretation is very much correct. Basing on the piece's 'metronome mark', 46 eighth notes should be fitted in one minute of time. Therefore, a slow tempo is needed in this particular piece.
About my opinion, I truly love how the piece is played.
Happy notes+Sad tempo=Euphoria
The piece sure brought me in a trance, I thought I was listening for 20 minutes. But the video says that it only lasted 8 minutes 49 seconds. Beautiful!
imagine walking on a street with some natural expressions. it has nothing to do with this guy playing cello but god dammit, this has nothing to do with this guy being the best one in almost whole world.... idk....
"I never play for musical connoisseurs because they don't need me. They can appreciate music just by looking at the score. I play for the people who may be listening to a piece for the first time in their lives and I try to express as much as I can and as strongly as I can in an effort to help them appreciate at least a large part of the piece."
I happen to like the slowness of this piece and how Mischa takes the time to make every note distinguished.... it makes you think about things... life, beauty, happiness, love... it's wonderful :)
Here's an idea: so, the musician needs his instrument to play the music he reads. He learns the music first, then he gets better at it, and finally he understands it. The more he plays it, the more he understands it, and the more he understands the composer's intention. He is enlightened. There is so much more in the sound emanating from the instrument than mere vibration. It is a translation of the musician's spirit and mind.
@Violinater yes he surtanly is a genius, but I must say my musician 'préféré' is Beethoven. Bach is soothing, Beethoven has more emotions involved. And that's what I like about his (beethoven's) music. Never the less, Bach is a master of music, and kicks the assess of all 'modern' music! truly timeless...
well I enjoyed it.... don't know why people have to be so technical about music, just have fun with it and let your emotions come out.... btw the cello is my favorite instrument ^_^
The depth and intensity of any piece of music is going to come from the musician playing it. It is the translation of the musician that makes you truly feel any piece of music. This is why Bach played by robots is boring and cold. The human touch give it a heart beat, a breath and warmth. True musicians understand this.
wow this almost made me cry and i dont usually cry to music. fuck the slow tempo. just draw a picture in your head of somebody so fragile you couldnt touch. I seriously thought about my girfreind and beautiful she was and the fairness of her complexion and figure, and how much she meant to me. try that for a change instead of bombing this guy who is OBVIOUSLY better than all of you about a draggy tempo. Seriously, im a cellist too and i might play it this slow to paint that picture i thought of.
Whether Mischa is playing this too slowly or not is only of insignificant importance. The fact that he is getting the point of the Allemande across is more important. It would be dreadful if the Allemande were both slow and chugging along, like a clock that takes 3 minutes to get past 60 seconds. With that said, Mr. Maisky's phrasing is wonderful and he never loses direction. It is a work of beauty.
You people are WAAAYY too concerned with the tempo and how it was meant to be played. He played it by his own interpretation and l believe that is better than just simply following the music. It obviously means a lot more to those who listen if you become part of the music rather than just playing it. Of course, this is just my own opinion and do not mean to undermine others' opinions
...so technical. Close you eyes and let the piece move you. You ruin music when you don't allow personal expression or emotion to affect you. It's not always about the "correct" tempo.
that is because casals takes a reasonable tempo for the piece and one should point out that he also observes all repeats in the piece. So now you shut up and try to read the score with a slight idea about how a baroque dance should be played.
my opinion is that maisky s reading is interesting but very hard to follow.
You seem to know too much and highly arrogant while expressing your self but YOU dont know anything. First of this piece takes a full 12 munites on the dvd because of the repeat of the 2nd part of the piece which is not included in this video by time constraints. And if u think that Maisky is "right" about his interpretation because he is a master, then it would be very hard for u to gove an exlanation to the point why another master cellist, Pablo Calsals, finishes the piece 7 minutes.

totally ridiculous, harmony is completely ruined. In the 5 other suites, the allemande's tempo is 2 times faster, but cheerfullythis guy play that slowly and without any structure and an awful vibrato. Of course it is beautiful, there is no way a cello suite can be not marvelous. But for goodness sake, it is an allemande !
as always, beautiful interpretation, right? to me, suite 1 and 6 share that bind that makes this entire peice as magical as it is. thumbs up jekatherina.
Tears are springing in my eyes. There is a man that knows Bach. I absolutly love this. I think my heart just opened up. Enchanting and haunting all at the same time- that is hard to do in cello music, i know. Excellent, I'm in love with this, truly in love.
I love Maisky, but in my opinion that's a pity his tempo here is so slow. There is a lot of sense in this phrases, that must be articulated with some movement.
