Obviously the producers don't understand that "MMA" is a generic term. It simply means mixed martial arts. A collection of the best techniques from several styles. So I guess if Lyoto Machida, who comes from a Shotokan Karate background, were selected instead of Bas, his kick would also be called an "MMA kick".
im sorry, but that was a muay thai kick. Hitting with the shin, the piviot of the foot, slightly bent leg. There is no such thing as a MMA kick. That was a muay thai kick done by a bigger guy. Some of u guys are are claiming Rutten's kick is a little different here and there and this and that. Well that doesnt mean its some different kind of kick. its still characterized as muay thai with the rotation, shin, and slightly bent leg. And if it wasnt, it still wouldnt be a MMA kick.
Well, techincly he wasn't doing a Thai kick. I've been training Kickboxing, and Muay Thai (as well with many others at Conway MMA) and a Thai kick his front foot would have pivoted and his kicking leg would have stand much straighter, he was doing more of a kickboxing style which has a more of whipping motion do to the fact that Kickboxing was created by Kyokishen Karate black belts.
At first I didn't understand what the difference was but after seeing Bas explain it I understand the difference between his and a traditional muay thai kick. The main difference is that he extends his stabilizing foot to a 90 degree angle before kicking and uses the tension to help him release the kick. A muay thai kick pivots off the ball of the foot and goes in a more up and over fashion. I don't know if this makes Bas' kick stronger, or the weight difference.
@darkstarfear Thank you. I hate hearing little kids saying "I take mma!" MMA isn't even a martial art lol, just a the knowing of 2 or more martial arts.
Lol Bas Rutten's kicks are Muay Thai kicks since thats his striking background. An MMA kick could be anything as long is you are an MMA fighter i guess.
Bas is a full blown heavy weight striker. He looks about 50-60lbs heavier than the Thai fighter. That probably has more to do with the result than the fighting genre.
@stylezNout They aren't trying to test all that. They're trying to test how much potential damage it could do. When they test a car wreck those aren't accurate because a normal person would slam on their brakes, but thats what they're testing for.
Bas Rutten is Dutch, not Thai, little buddy. And in fairness, Bas plants his foot when he kicks, without pivoting, so it is different from a Muay Thai kick. :-D
this is stupid, Bass is amazing, but you are comparing a muay thai knee to a muay thai kick, of course the kick will be stronger, compare kick for kick then you will see similar results the motion from a knee to a circular kick will obviously give different results, you dont need a machine to prove that

hmm..its a bit biased, his numbers are off the charts b/c of his weight size,he's definitely 40 to 60 ibs heavier than the muay thai champ in there.
if it was a muay thai champed weighed in as much as him, results would have been similar.
Mass makes a difference when it comes to making an impactful strike
