Yeah, it was written by Harland Howard and first done by Charley Walker, late by Buck Owens, Ernest Tubb, Becky Hobbs, Mel Tillis, Patsy Cline as well as Jerry Lee Lewis.
The song as you know it was re-written from the demo by my uncle (Jack D Johnson: Charley Pride's manager -he managed Ronnie Milsap as well, etc.) to fit with Charley Pride's style and experiences. Jack didn't take a partial songwriter's credit, -it was all for the benefit of Charley, his main client. Some may refute this, but it doesn't matter, it's the way it was.
