It's crazy how, Rainsborough is the spitting image of Aragorn...or I should say, Fasbender looks so much like Viggo Mortensen, and the man that plays Cromwell kinda resembled Sean Bean...Anywho, whatever, great series really sad but brilliant at the same time xD
This series wasn't perfect, but I liked the way they used regional accents for some of the leading characters (which is realistic). I always get irritated when British costume dramas insist on having ALL the historical figures speak like members of a posh Surrey golf club.
As someone with Irish family, I see Cromwell as nothing but a butcher that history has conveniently glossed over the atrocities he and his army carried out.
Unfortunatley history has glossed over a lot of things like that. Wheather it was Cromell's army butchering 1/4( FACT ) of the native population of Ireland, men, women and worst of all children. To Recently the British army driving into a gaelic stadium and shooting at the audience to Bloody Sunday where 14 unarmed innocent men and boys were shot down as they fled. The IRA did some terrible things as well, but do you think half or even a quarter would hav joind up if it wasnt 4 things like B.S.
Oh no, exactly. I have a foot in both camps so to speak (English mum/Irish dad); but being very proud of my Irish family I do get very mad at the way the Irish have been treated by the English has been glossed over. Cromwell's butchery in particular. They still say 'the curse of cromwell on you' in parts of Wexford.
Well there's yet to be produced any real evidence for him massacring unarmed men (other than preists) and within the context of 17th century warfare his actions were what was expected (no quarter, and the European wars were far worse). Cromwell appears to have sped up the crushing of the Irish but it was largely for English security rather than purely racial motives or religion (though it did contribute as did probably fianace to a small degree).
...There were commanders far worse than Cromwell in the Irish campaign and before him, why is Cromwell focused upon as a figure of hate and not them? As Cromwell was actually quite lenient - no pillaging. Andhe had been misinformed by stories of the 1641 rebellion and there was a genuine fear of Irish invasion (royalists). In my opinion this wasn't stressed enough , but then again it was a fictional drama, not - though sadly some of those I know interpreted it as such.

What did you think of the scene with Cromwell in Ireland?
Scoob505 3 years ago
Depends on whether you look at his actions from a 17th century viewpoint or whether you view them from a 21st century perspective.

I have many English friends from London and Bath and Exeter, some are half Irish half English, some are full English.

Bath is a gorgeous city, but VERY expensive to visit. Exeter's nice too, and a lot cheaper. :O)

Because he conquers...
And he is good at it.
