If a pack of wolves were to hunt red deer (endangered), I wouldn't hesitate balancing the situation with a weapon, though it's not wolves' "fault" that the red deer are endangered and they've been hunting them since before we were a force to reckon with. Wolves will get a chance to restore their numbers, unlike red deer.
