Thats simple, when you have the marking Vertical on the forehead, then he is Vaishnawa i.e follower of Lord Visnu, if its horizontal then he is Shaiva or worshipper of Lord Shiva, but both of them respect Visnu and Shiva, there is no rivalry
@overstand7 There are many sadhu in India who pretend to be sadhus just to swindle money or power, The markings on his head (tilak) are of the Shrii Vaishnava Sampradaya meaning he worships Lord Vishnu as instructed by Ramanuja Acarya so his tilak shows us he is a Vaishnava (devotee of Vishnu) if he spoke of Lord Shiva I wonder what the context was? It seemed you were discussing his hair, maybe he was eluding to the fact the dread locks come from Lord Shiva. If you need more info PM me..
