They (Shabab) spread by opening mosques throughout the south and brainwash young boys as they see them as potential recruitment (for their perverted religious wars). That's why they should not get a foothold of that country.

Somalis are mostly Muslims themselves, why does Al-Shabab need to tell them how to be good Muslims? Because they want to be part of the government and plunder Somalia's treasury just as the warlords (they wear different hats but have the same ambitions).

Shabab but they control their regions through violence and intimidation. They are literally trying to change the mind-frame of the Somali people. I mean, how can you tell people not to watch soccer or listen to music? How can you tell men to grow beards and women to stay in their homes and wear veils? Now you see why they opt for violence and fear to win the hearts and minds of their own people?

That's Mogadishu...Somalia has various ports and airports :D The weak government couldn't control Mogadishu airport and its port facilities without the 8K AU forces. That said, AL-Shabab has Kismayo's port and various run-way fields for air-cargo. Then this region called Puntland (wants to rejoin Somalia once it becomes stable enough) has its own ports and airfields. The separatist region of Somaliland has it's own shipment hubs too.

Somalia is carved into various fiefdoms.
