DOES ANYONE EVER ASSOCIATE JIMI HENDRIX AS BEING AN INFLUENCE ON ALL GUITAR PLAYERS THAT EVER HEARD HIM. IF STEVIE RAY VAUGHN COULD SAY HE LOVED HENDRIX, BILLY GIBBONS, ETC,ETC, WHY DOES RACE HAVE TO COME INTO THE PICTURE. JIMI SAID HE LOVED BILLY GIBBONS TONE AND PLAYED BOB DYLAN MUSIC ALL THE TIME. YES BLACKBYRD LOVED HENDRIX I DO TO. IT WAS THE MUSIC THAT WE LISTENED TO TOGETHER WHILE HENDRIX WAS STILL ALIVE. AND WE TRIED TO PLAY AS MUCH OF IT AS OUR FINGERS COULD HANDLE. BYRD PLAYS BB TOO
JIMI HENDRIX DID FOR MUSIC WHAT NO OTHER MUSICIAN DID BEFORE HIM. HE COMPLETELY CHANGED MUSIC FOREVER. NOW SINCE I'VE KNOWN DWAYNE PERSONALLY SINCE 1971 WHEN WE WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL IN INGLEWOOD CALIFORNIA HE HAS BEEN GREAT. I LEARNED A LOT FROM HIM THEN ABOUT GUITAR AND I KNOW HE IS STILL PROGRESSING BECAUSE HE L-O-V-E-S THE GUITAR. HIS BROTHER BOUGHT HIM A TELE BACK THEN AND HE TOOK OFF ON A JOURNEY THAT IS STILL IN BLOOM...PLAY ON BIRD.....KEITH PARKER
To set the record straight, Hendrix is clearly a pioneer of an unprecedented caliber, both on the Guitar and in the realm of rock music in general. His work is so influential it became a primary building block of Funkadelic. So yes, most if not all the great funkadelic guitarists are very inspired by Hendrix, but I don't think a single one of them is trying to imitate him. Is his influence evident? Yes. Do they name check him with respect? Yes. Are these guys amazing guitarists? Yes
Peelick first of all get Jimi' dick out cha mouth. Yeah Jimi was the first to take the guitar way out there but black bird fo show has his own style like many other guitar players who play in that relm. Im sure your a muscian but you obviously suck because to make a comment like the you have no groove. O ya and I play all over the world and believe me there arent many bigger fans of Hendrix the me and you can ba lee dat!
@joeabr ....Peelick must have got choked on Jimi's dick because he hasn't posted anything lately. I think he is a frustrated wanna be musician that can't play anywhere but his garage and just wants to attack great guitarist like Blackbyrd. I don't why everyone wants to compare every guitarist to Jimi. Damn move on.
@Peelick....No need to debate with you because there is no debate when it comes to what a great guitarist Blackbyrd is! A lot of us are moving on and enjoying Blackbyrd's new cd Bout Funkin Time. All of it is Blackbyrd!!!
blackbyrd's cool he's good but peelick's right hendrix influenced the whole p funk crew eddie hazel was the only one who came closest to hendrix. too bad byrd only has 1 album out from the complete 30 years he's been with the mob sometimes p funk was too underground. eddie hazel was obscure and only 1 album in his lifetime. mike hampton only one album and not many people but hardcore maggots heard it plus that live gig in san francisco
Wow there is some people on here that just want to argue for no reason at all.
Byrd was definitely part of the nucleus of P Funk is missed very much.
This is one of the best videos and Byrd is amazing.
I don't understand why all the comments they were throwing at Timmyfunk1 about drugs and Eddie Van Halen. What does that have to do with Blackbyrd being an amazing guitarist.
Thanks for posting this video. I really enjoyed it and see why he was with P Funk for nearly 30 years.
maybe u youngsters who insist on bickering about hendrix/hazel need to know that in the early 70's eddie hazel was declared the "heir apparent" to jimi hendrix. this was BEFORE jimi died.
Eddie was influenced by hendrix, and back in 1968, what guitarist wasn't? eddie was never the showman hendrix was--it wasn't his style at all. eddie found his own sound and continued to build on it. i am not impressed with blackbyrd mck. just because he was with p-funk does not make him a guitar god.
and no ! mike hampton cannot fuck with eddie van halen but niether one of them in their own right fucks with the long spectacular superlative encrypted iron clad iconic legacy of the great JIMI HENDRIX. fact is there would be no them without hendrix and i think most of them know that which makes them all the more greater .
point is this , you cant have a child first then decide to create the parents , you have a parent that that creates children and often times what happens is that the children carries traits of the parent. looking at it like that makes it all the more simpler for those whom are just clueless , (Jimi is the father ) of these mother fuckers , maggot brain is like eddie hazels most noted work and compares to nothing hendrix, as for blackbyrd he is 1 hell of a guitar arpegiator but not much else
Blackbyrd is the shit! And people need to recognize. Too bad some fools took up so much of the comment space to debate something entirely different. Thanks for posting BB shredding
I agree with timmy byrd is an amazing player he played witrh p funk 30 years you outta hear birdie from the brides live cd plus you outta hear dog star, quickie, and he did the freeze and acupunture byhimself.
This is whacked!!! His Tone is horrid, He has no Technique, he's just playing a bunch of fast rammed together bullshit! Put his ass on stage with Greg Howe, he'll get his lunch money took....
Greg Howe couldn't clean the crustations out of Blackbyrd's fingernails. This solo only sounds the way it does because of the way that the audio is mixed. I was there to see this axe molestation throw down and it sounded like heaven to my ears. Don't just hear...LISTEN!!!
And if you ask Paul Jackson how he feels about Blackbyrd, he'll tell you the same thing that I'm trying to tell you, and that is that Blackbyrd is the shit.
Dude, it is painfully obvious that you can't tap into the instrumental genius that is Blackbyrd. So why don't you go and listen your Yes records and we'll agree to disagree and call it a day.
U can't possibly be a musician man. However I do actually own 1 yes album. It's the shit for sure. Trever Rabin on guitar. But you've probably never heard of him either. Man put the joint down and get hip. This cat's not even known outside of the Funkedelic world. May they rust in peace..........
Yeah, I got a Yes album too. Whoopty damn doo! It's obvious that you don't get out much, because Blackbyrd is certainly known in the avant garde musical circles. His work with the Headhunters(who you probably don't have one album by) and the Red Hot Chili Peppers speak volumes. I don't even have to get into what he's done with P-Funk for the past 30 years.
Well actually I did a tour with Enemy Squad in '99. Gabe Gonzales is from the P-funk allstars. So I know a WHOOOOLLE Lot! And it was basically parliment rehashed. Bored me to tears.
And what have you done lately? P-Funk has been influencing generations of musicians for the almost 40 years. At least Gabe(who I also know personally)knows what's up. Obviously, none of what Gabe knows rubbed off on ya, did it son?
Toured Europe. What have U done besides smoked a joint and listened to Maggot Brain. Gabe doesn't have anything to teach me cause I was out there when I met Gabe in '87. I think he was in high school. U might wanna find out something when U talking to me pothead......
And I've been archiving this thang called P-Funk for the past 30 years, so that mugs like yourself could have an accurate history to reference, as well serve as videographer and archivist for the band. And your last comment doesn't hold a drop of water, since I do not smoke, drink, or use drugs.
All of those P- Funk cats think they're on Jimi's level. And they're all hilarious!! I guest there's just no help for the musically RETARDED..........
Now I know you are a lost soul. And yes, I would definitely put Eddie Hazel on the same level with Hendrix and I'm sure you think of that as blasphemy. And you know what, I don't care. When you think that you can reach half of the level the P-Funk guitarists have achieved, you can call me. Otherwise, pick up a copy of "Maggot Brain" or "Game, Dames And Guitar Thangs" and free YOUR mind!
Oh stop with the whole "Jimi's the untouchable angel" crap! That shit don't hold up anymore. Eddie represents the same level of excellence that Hendrix does. It's a new day, son. Smell the Java and free your mind.
ok so i was readin u and timmyfunk's lil argument and i gotta say timmyfunk is definitely right. jimi's style was less original than eddie hazel's or any of the p-funk guitarists. jimi had a really strong traditional blues kind of sound, he just played it louder and faster. so i would say that stylistically, eddie opened more doors than jimi
Jimi created everything those parliment guys did AFTER Jimi had did it. There's no Parli-Funkedel guitarist that has or will ever be compared to the musical genius that is JIMI HENDRIX! Can I please debate on youtube with someone who knows something about MUSIC!!!
Well I guest you were out that week, when they taught the history of Rock & Great Guitarists. Hendrix is in the encyclopedia, find me a parliment guitarist in one.
unfortunately for you your doctorates means nothing in this here forum , the truth of the very matter is you can have 20 doctorates , and it will not make you the poster child for music and soul and knowledge of music and the essence of what you have actually have to be born with to understand beyond just a a doctorates . Peelick speaks the truth and it doesnt take a doctorates to see that
The P funk guitarists could not have done what they did without the influence of Jimi Hendrix, period. They built on what he had created... a funky, psychodelic predominantly pentatonic based form of shred.
the contrary tim is totally wrong, and you would have to be literally a deaf or blind crack addicted buffon to even remotetly feel otherwise given the evidence. eddie is good , hendrix is better eddie co wrote and had a style , hendrix invented a style that eddie borrowed from as well as like millions of other guitarists, be they famous or not. hendrix despite not having any vocal training even utilized his distinct voice in implementing his vision in music
Eddie Hazel in no shape form or fashion is in the same universe with Jimi. What did Eddie do that was even within a fraction of what Hendrix did in 3 years. The only thing Eddie has in common with Jimi is he's dead. Man you're in the Fucking wind just blowing & going nowhere. Hell you're not even a musician. Keep funking oh lost one..
Yada, yada, yada. And you are still living in the past. You've made it abundantly clear that you drank the kool aid a long time ago. Eddie Hazel certainly does occupy the same space that Jimi does. Maggot Brain, Standing On The Verge, and his own solo album are proof enough. Face it pal, reality as you know it is changing. And you don't have to be a musician to know this. Now you try having a nice drug free night and just keep saying no.
Let's see Maggot Brain - Are U Experenced? Standing on the verge - Axis Bold as love Eddie's solo record - Electric lady land Not to even mention Band of Gypsys. And you try to compare these records. Jimi Hendrix is the Jesus Christ of Electic Guitar FOOL!! Eddie is just someone who walked thru the door that Jimi opened. Where's Eddie's song writing, Where's the ballads where is the presence & the ora that Jimi brought to the world of music & guitar. You're a dumb ass for even attempting this...
First of all, if you can't have a discourse without childish insults, then don't indulge. And yes I put all of the albums I've listed in that same category, and if that's something your delicate sensibilities can't handle, so be it. Eddie co-wrote the entire Standing On The Verge album. Eddie opened his own door FOOL! What's the use in arguing with someone who obviously not only drank the kool aid, but had it spiked.
Doors to the dopehouse don't count. Neither does attacking flight attendants. U so called funk guys are the biggest idiots when it comes music. Totally detached from reality!
The only one that is detached from reality is you. Oh yeah, Hendrix really displayed some stellar behavior while he was on this earth. The guys you call idiots are some of the most influential musicians of the past 40 years. Living under a rock certainly didn't give you any real vision, did it.
Actually i'm referring to you not the actual MUSICIANS (And we know you're not one of those) & the rest of you so called fans who just don't know a lot about music you just talk about FUNK & usually don't listen to any thing or anybody that's not BLACK. And you try in your whacked out minds to tell other people stupid stuff like Man, Mike Hampton can kick EVH's ass. And in your minds you believe this nonsense. And that's pretty sad, I guess there are all kinds of fools in the world!
Considering the amount of times I've seen Blackbyrd play, as well as other giants in the P-Funk guitar stable, I know just as much, if not more than most, thank you much.
Look dude, you are not going to change my viewpoint. Again, let's just agree to disagree and move on with our lives.
Wish I was there ! isnt that dennis chambers on drums ? BTW it's revolting about badass dudes like him being virtually unknown. Dude plays like Greg Howe now but 25 years earlier lmao... Racism in guitar world revolts me, even though I'm white. Every single guitar media presents is full of white players.

Considering the amount of times I've seen Blackbyrd play, as well as other giants in the P-Funk guitar stable, I know just as much, if not more than most, thank you much.
Look dude, you are not going to change my viewpoint. Again, let's just agree to disagree and move on with our lives.

Well your much ain't very much....

What a clever retort that was!
Dude, Yes ain't even on the scene anymore. P-Funk is still funking and rolling, so there goes that comparison.

As much as I love Eddie, he was somewhat out of it that night. I would have loved to hear more from him though.

This performance also features Paul Schaffer from Late Night w/ David Letterman, sitting in on keyboards. Eddie Hazel is also on stage.
