I've been considering picking up Nier. I'm a big fan of most [J]RPGs on the Xbox 360, which is my primary console. I've heard that Nier is perhaps less than the sum of its parts but I am a fan of 'underdog' games. @xDilutedx It's more that, one, I can't find it cheaper than $25 here, and two, I don't trade in or sell my games, I collect them after I play them - but if it isn't worth it, I don't want to waste even a cent on it. I have free game rentals for that sole purpose.

@Zanryu you should def save it for dragon age II if you need that 25 bucks then, but over here to rent a game its like 8 bucks for 1 night depending on how new etc... so 25 is not much more to have that subconscious drive to play it knowing its yours. i'd say 25 is quite worth it but, thats IF you can still get dragon age no sweat.

I have $30 down on my Bioware Signature edition of DA2, For a 1 week rental (that's what I'd get on Nier), it's about $13, but even then - if it sucks, yanno. I can't find any reviews from reliable sources, only the players whose names I've never seen before. I read a lot of reviews after my shifts. xD
@Zanryu i trust IGN 75% of the time and the Aussie one gave it a 7.3, I figure for 25 bucks anything 6 upwards is worth it. though of course IGN have also done some douche ratings in the past.. from the gameplay footage i'm seeing here i'd give it about a 7 and action RPG's are my #1 preference of game style by far. fantasy + medieval elements all the better.

Then they rate Killzone low due to story, which is actually quite well done. But you're right on the action, it looks worth it, but that's the only reason.

If 90% of the gameplay is running around swinging a sword, make the the sword swinging fluid! Make a decent camera or targeting system. Seriously. This is by Cavia, the same tards who made Drakengard. Which also had a fucked up, ambiguous story with rigid, awkward combat.

Do you know any other games for the ps3 that is similar to Nier in terms of gameplay? I like to play games that are RPGish and open world in a way. along with the leveling and quest with the dungeon crawling and such.
@411MAGGOT - Considering this is one of the most action packed RPG game ive seen for consoles. Id have to say it looks good. God of War series is my style of gameplay. This reminds of me of Zelda, which i enjoyed.

Only people who appreciate artistic beauty will enjoy this game. It's that simple: there is nothing in this game for those who look for action and pretty graphics.

I can't believe people are complaining about the graphics. I personally think it looks great. Though the animation does get a little clunky a good bit of the time.
the movement looks a bit awkward at times, the graphics arent state of the art either but still looks worth playing... the cinematic like in battle camera angles are amazing though!

Then it was held back only by story/gameplay & you had some really great games come out of there.

@ChildrenofAmory It depends on what kind of a game you're going for. If it's a platform based adventure game or something of course the gameplay should be good. I like the gameplay in the Metroidvania's which often have relatively no story.
A game doesn't really have to differ much from a movie or even a book though... & many don't these days. Remove all the gameplay elements from many of the games out there & all you have is a straightforward movie story with CGI graphics rather than actors.

The same was done or attempted to be done in movies for a little while, where you'd watch a movie with audience-chosen plot points so different people could essentially watch the same movie with different choices input creating different experiences. @paskoxbox With most of the new games it seems they spend so much and work so hard on graphics they lose out on everything else. And the market's sort of driven them there. Most of them would do better just as a 2 hour movie or something and convey the same information. It's ok with some FPS or fighting games where you get a lot of gameplay and fun with good graphics and most of the gameplay is about PVP fighting and I love both of those but it comes up seriously lacking in other places.

Only people who appreciate artistic beauty will enjoy this game. It's that simple: there is nothing in this game for those who look for action and pretty graphics.
Story, characters, setting, and music are the highlights.

I can't believe people are complaining about the graphics. I personally think it looks great. Though the animation does get a little clunky a good bit of the time.

the movement looks a bit awkward at times, the graphics arent state of the art either but still looks worth playing... the cinematic like in battle camera angles are amazing though!

@paskoxbox Graphics are not all. I'm spending most of my time playing SNES (CT:FoE) and GBA(Castlevania) games on emulator because games today just suck ass compared to old RPG's with 2D sprite graphics.
Why do developers feel the need to appease idiots like you and make these "amazing" looking games at the cost of gameplay and story?

a great game has to have all the 3 elements story, gameplay and graphics thats why thay are GREAT games and not "somewhat great" of course 2D games are better than 3D those games where made in the pinnacle of gaming history , its unfair to compare 2d and 3d though, back in the day the it wasnt about impressing gamers with graphics it was about complexity and dexterity theyre acctualy fun to play and not stressing like nowadays games

You've got this whole history of gaming from like...1973? to 2011 & along that course games were kinda shitty & stupid then they had sort of an enlightenment era where you had enough memory that things looked good enough and you could fit a fair amount of information. Then it was held back only by story/gameplay & you had some really great games come out of there.

@PurityandDeath What!? Did you honestly compare the virtues of a video game, to those of a book? Games cost 60 dollars. Games are an interactive experience. All the story and pretty characters in the world doesn't excuse bad gameplay, in a GAME.
God I'm so sick of JRPG fanboys justifying crap gameplay. It doesn't have to be either/or. Oh and the stories in most of these JRPGs? AREN'T THAT GOOD.

@ChildrenofAmory It depends on what kind of a game you're going for. If it's a platform based adventure game or something of course the gameplay should be good. I like the gameplay in the Metroidvania's which often have relatively no story.
A game doesn't really have to differ much from a movie or even a book though... & many don't these days. Remove all the gameplay elements from many of the games out there & all you have is a straightforward movie story with CGI graphics rather than actors.

@ChildrenofAmory It's like a lot of what gets made really just wants to be a movie and they kinda throw some interactive bits in between. The same was done or attempted to be done in movies for a little while, where you'd watch a movie with audience-chosen plot points so different people could essentially watch the same movie with different choices input creating different experiences. Sort of a choose-your-own-adventure movie.

@ChildrenofAmory And price is... Beside the point. No one has to pay retail sticker price for anything. Especially for the wanton deluges of catatonically developed garbage spewn forth at consumers. Frankly all I really do buy, especially new, are books.
I don't give a shit about crap gameplay, frankly you can take your gameplay and shove if it isn't good just get rid of it, do something else like Hard Rain. Just be goddamn inventive for a change.
Also Chrono Trigger is a fucking awesome RPG.

I buy all my games used. The price point however is what companies expect to be paid. Whether or not you give them the finger by buying used is beside the point. @PurityandDeath I used to play text based games back on my Commodore 64.
If you want to make an interactive book, then MAKE one. Japan puts out such things every year by the boat load. This isn't an interactive book, it's an action game, that has poor action.
Don't create a shoddy RPG, or Action RPG, and then use the "interactive book" nonsense, after the fact, to justify poor and uninspired design. A good story is valuable, but in not at the expense of gameplay.

@paskoxbox With most of the new games it seems they spend so much and work so hard on graphics they lose out on everything else. And the market's sort of driven them there. Most of them would do better just as a 2 hour movie or something and convey the same information. It's ok with some FPS or fighting games where you get a lot of gameplay and fun with good graphics and most of the gameplay is about PVP fighting and I love both of those but it comes up seriously lacking in other places.
