on the desktop, click where the time/battery is and you'll get a drop down menu, click "internet connection" and choose the wifi you want to connect too. You'll be asked for the security key if you need one.
after that the phone will remember the hotspot and automatically connect to it.
I've been away from home for the past week watching youtube videos on 3G and its been a godsend. So much nicer than having to launch loads of different apps.
@inmedx Yeah i agree, i cannot wait till the device itself arrived, and im hoping the Maemo community will really grown with developers, its running the same hardware (CPU/GPU) as the iphone too and look where that is!
The browsers amazing from what i hear, full plugin support, flash, java css, the lot.
At the moment it supports things like Google talk, jabber, ovi, skype. etc and I'm sure they'll add more eventually for yahoo and MSN. They can be integrated into the actual phone so they work with your contacts properly. Fingers crossed its released soon. Open source possibility is endless. Someone might already be working on it over at the Maemo site. So you could ask there, they'd know more than me.
In the mean time, the phone can (and does) run net based applications like eBuddy.
Absolutely loving this phone. Have had it for a week now. If you are having problems with flash content, but your cache to automatic(default is 5mb and max is 40, but in automatic it can even go further than that).
Thought some flash content just won't play smooth and that is most of all because of the flash and more about Adobe not releasing proper flash for mobiles.
Thankfully when flash 10 comes early next year N900 got HW 3D acceleration so it can fully use it. Should be great.
1. Off the bat, hardly any lag. You may see some if you're running around 8 or 9 applications that require a lot of memory, like 3D games or full flash-based sites. But you'll hardly even notice it.
2. Oddly, there isn't a native application for FB. The widget simply displays info: messages, requests, status updates.. etc.. when you click it it'll send you to the full FB website which loads impressively well over both 3G and 2G cellar connections.
3. It has access to full chat, taskbar & applications which all work. I was playing Mafia Wars today while chatting to a friend. :)
4. The flash version of the phone is 9.something I believe. Although updating to 10 seems likely to happen at some point. I haven't encountered any flash content that's failed to load at the moment.
Well having flash embedded in the browser is a good thing... there is more to flash video on the web than youtube.. many sites have flash vidoes that arent hosted on youtube.. this gives you the ability to watch them on the move.
It has a jerky playback on the iPlayer site. It's something to do with how to stream is coded, because its made to be viewed on a desktop.
The iPhone uses a lower resolution and a specific applet/codec. Someone (Probably BBC themselves) should be able to code an application for Maemo that solves the problem.
I was wondering about this whole flash thing on mobile browsers. Though it does give you more freedom to view and use more content on the net, does it really make a difference to viewing youtube videos?
How is the experience any different from having a native youtube client on the device like with the iPhone or Android or HTC Sense UI based devices have?
Anyways, thanks for the review and one again keep up the good work and keep posting videos.
Tbh having the full flash 9 is great, it gives you so many options and allows you to get the most out of sites. There is an application available for maemo 5 that lets you view youtube videos outside of the web browser, but I haven't tried it yet. The browser works well and you can add a comment, fav, rate, etc etc as you would normally.
I've compared the youtube playback to that on my N97 and Blackberry Bold 9000 which both use an application, and I have to say it looks a LOT smoother.
So whats the bid deal, if they can both show the same content. I realise that the N900 is a far superior device, but is there any difference in the youtube viewing experience between the two devices?
For example, is it possible to watch HQ and HD videos on the N900? Previous reviews have said that this isn't possible.
I don't think they give you an option for HD within flash 9. Maybe if its upgraded to flash 10 it would. Still, the videos play well in standard resolution.
I dunno if the app lets you view HQ or not, like I said I haven't tried it.
Depends how much you wanna have running, I've not had any problems loading up youtube and having facebook, twitter and google running in the background. Then again if you're watching a video chances are you won't need too much multi tasking, as you'll be watching it. But yeah, it handles it pretty well. When you have a few things open and you switch back to YouTube you might notice a little jump in the video before it plays smoothly again, but thats down to the memory switching I should think.
how to connect to wifi????? reply plsss...

If your connected to wifi, yeah.. If you wanna browse through your service provider you have to make sure you have a data plan.

Plus it's good idea to play youtube videos in full screen because then it's 100% smooth always.
tissot233 2 years ago
Yep :) that way all the processing power goes on the video, not the page content.

so does it have wifi built in?...i dont need a 3g plan to use my wi fi, right?
sourskittles4295 2 years ago
yup, wifi is built in and no you don't need a 3G plan to use that. :) Although it would help when you're on the move and no available wifi is around.

Finally somebody made a sensible video on the youtube playback. Thank you.
Could you also possibly try BBC iPlayer? It works really well on the iPhone but early reviews show poor performance on the N900.

iPlayer for iPhone is a program version. Tests done on N900 were on browser iPlayer version.

There is a simple youtube client called zoutube. I expect more youtube client versions to come.
mayo705 2 years ago
Why? You can just use youtube through the browser.
razumichini 2 years ago
launching an application can sometimes hold more benefits. Both for quick access and performance enhancements.

thanks for the video!, and, what happens if you touch the full homescreen button of a youtube video?

The one that makes the youtube videos play in full screen mode? Just tried, they play full screen. :)
