What are you talking about the subtitles, 'seecolrd'? They are just as sung. Just enjoy the beauty of this work without complaining. Thank you Epogdous for posting this. I had never heard it until recently and wanted to hear it again. I really appreciate your putting up the text.
Robert Shaw probably was better at balancing chorus and orchestra so all voices could clearly be heard than any other conductor. He was passionate about the music and compassionate toward the musicians. He learned his lessons well from Nadia Boulanger and it was a joy to work with him.

Wait wait. I messed up, excuse me. It's 5 movements and the part we're talking about is at 2:24. But the new movement doesn't come in until 2:55. In which case you're still wrong.
No it's not the new movement we're talking about. Its more in the middle of the video. The song is split into 4 movements, correct? And clearly if it's 2 1/2 minutes into the song it wouldn't be a new movement yet.
This piece is sooooo difficult. Especially considering the numerous key changes and the contrasting pacing that williams takes it through. There is such a wonderful feeling of accomplishment when you're actually able to due -any- part of it justice haha...
We're playing this at Southern Miss this semester, and this is my first semester of voice, and they put me on tenor (when I'm a baritone) and as soon as I saw those Ab's in the second movement, I was done. hahaha. SO hard, but fantastiiiic music.
silly people having a go over a title *eyeroll*. I'm more offended that stupid YouTube fingerprinting doesn't know it's Atlanta Symphony Orchestra from London Philharmonic...
And it's beautiful music, so calm your squabbling and listen to it.
@dented42 you make no sense. Why on earth would decide to put the title, THIRTY SECONDS INTO THE PIECE. Obviously you have no idea what we're talking about. It's not a repetition and it is DEFINITELY not the title we're talking about.
@seacoloured I wrote the subtitles and I get the damn libretto to make them. "Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem". That's all what it says about the text of the first movement. I would have needed the score to be more precise.
@seaof2010 I don't want to argue with anybody. Especially over such a thing. English is not my mother tongue. Even if you don't like my videos, try to be more respectful please. Enjoy the music!
@Epogdous hold on, hold on. I NEVER said i didn't like the music. I also didn't know that you weren't a native speaker of english, so i apologize. But i love the music don't get me wrong. I wouldn't have put it on my playlist, put it as a favorite, or be listening to it RIGHT NOW.
@seaof2010 No one suggested that you didn't like it. For the love of God, don't get your knickers in a twist. And most importantly, get some perspective, he messed up on a subtitle, it doesn't really matter. In the long run, is it worth arguing?
@dented42 he clearly said, "Even if you don't like my videos". and this is obviously one of his videos.
Yes he did mess up a subtitle everyone does it. But he could have responded to this by saying, "oh yeah ur right," he doesnt even have to agree with he could have said i messed up, hell, he could have said shut up bastard everyone makes mistakes. but he didn't and defended himself saying that seacoloured was wrong. I saw this and tried to verify what seacoloured was saying.
@seaof2010 When I said "No one suggested that you didn't like it.", I was referring to the music, not the video. I apologize for the ambiguity.
Technically, the poster of the video was correct. The title of the first section is 'Angus Dei', and therefore it makes perfect sense to put those words at the beginning. The libretto for this passage is 'Dona Nobis Pacem', NOT 'Dona Pacem'.
The lyric is 'Dona Pacem', but here the subtitles mirror the libretto, a practice that comes from opera IIRC.
@seaof2010 The point being, it does not seem to me that he made a mistake. He made a conscious design decision that is neither correct or incorrect. Therefore you may or may not like his decision, but to say that he did the wrong thing is just silly.
@seaof2010 He put 'Angus Dei' because that is the title of this segment. After that the libretto says 'Dona Nobis Pacem', which is correct, because libretto isn't supposed to contain every single repetition, it is supposed to contain enough of the words so that the listener/reader can understand what is being sung.
can someone help me out what is the musical term that Vaughan Williams uses in a lot of his works you know when the Sop-Ten sing octaves from each other and also the Alto-Bass do the same..this is seen a lot in this work
Sang this with the Pomona College Choir last year. So epic. I've been searching for it on YouTube ever since. Glad to finally find a good-quality recording of it! Thanks!
@donnacentanni This recording was released in 2001 for EMI Classics. It's part of a double cd set that you can easly find on Amazon or look for elsewhere. Good luck! =]
@MisterHowe: Really? I don't know much RvW, but from what I gather from my fellow musicians (I just sang in a performance of this), it's sometimes considered his magnum opus.
I love the diction on this recording, by the way. Apparently Boult is on top of his Robert Shaw game. "Would the singer attempT To sing?" You can actually understand the text. Excellent job by the choir.
The absence of this powerful piece on You Tube was something I have long wanted to correct, but you have done it with one of the best recordings of this piece I've ever come across. Thank you!
Thanks for posting this, Epogdous, and for filling a vacuum on youtube that very much needed filling. I performed this piece years ago, and what a marvelous experience it was!
what a great piece

Walt Whitman's poetry is absolutely stunning and powerfully set to Vaughan Williams's music. A real message for everlasting world peace.
Very forward thinking for its time?
