Actually, if you already have some sort of microphone, all you need is recording software and you can do it!

Since you mentioned Windows Media Player I'm assuming you're using Windows, so options you have that cost no money at all include LMMS, Jokosher, Kristal and Audacity. Then you can either make your own music, use samples, or download backing tracks for singers and sing over that.

That's one of the great things about modern technology, anyone can make music at home now. :)

@FestFalang - It's the same guitar part... maybe re-recorded but it's the same part. The finished song has all kinds of layering on it and at least two or three guitar parts but you can still make out the original riff from this clip.

John, this doesn't surprise me at all. That you don't write songs. You engineer them using a small piece and then extrapolate. That's why most of your stuff I have heard sounds nice but lacks substance... because there is no song.. just a bunch of stuff that sounds nice. How about your write a song without protools and then use the overdubs later to sweeten the cake.. the cake you have been making is all icing. Make a real cake and you will have another monster hit on your hands.
