Culex is a boss referencing the Final Fantasy Series (it's the only enemy in SMRPG whose spirte is a static 2D image instead of animated pseudo 3-D like everything else, he calls himself a dark knight, he says he comes from "another game", etc), so it's fitting that his battle theme a remix is the FFIV boss theme.
The FF Prelude / Crystal Theme and the Victory Fanfare are also remixed and present in SMRPG.

No, the boss isn't FROM any Final Fantasy game, he doesn't appear anywhere in any game int he series. He's just a reference to the early games in the Final Fantasy series. He's only a Super Mario RPG boss.

culex isnt that bad just have someone wearing the lazy shell and the safety ring the safety ring makes anything the crystals do equal 0 or 1 hp and the lazy shell blocks the rest after awhile the crystals and culex run out of fp and just sit there

I used to be able to just use rock candies on him over and over again and beat him. Little known fact: timed hits also extend to getting Lucky! when using items.

Look, they make tons of rediculously terrible games: Super mario galaxy, A Kingdom Hearts ripoff with tons of control failures.
