I have this tank encyclopedia and it says this tank had horrendous engine failures and was unreliable I don't know the Chieftain in this video looks like it could do alot of damage and like the guy said it looks as though it's built from good material does anyone know if the engine failures are true?
@ak907jk The early engines had a 90% failure rate - lot's of cylinder liner problems. Add to this lot's of leaks, which got onto the steering discs - causing steering problems. My first Chieftain in 1975 had 4 new engines in 3 months - with a total mileage of 200, about 50 miles per engine!
I saw the Chieftain at Grafenwoer in Germany....it's crew described it as a "rum lot." It was a bit long in the tooth by then, up against Leopards and M-60A3's. They came in 4th that year (out of 4).
@Jan38A You're right about Chieftain, it was woefully underpowered with a crap engine, but by the time Challenger came along, lessons had been learned.and the engine was a much more powerful Rolls Royce diesel.
