if you double the length of a string... you move an octave lower.
cool huh. it takes twice as long for the wave to bounce back... and there is your math with the music. (measure your guitar from the bridge to the octave fret, then measure your guitar from the bridge to the top bridge. exactly double)

@TheeAldeen The amazing musicians that I know (see some of my other videos) really understand how their tools work. But the purpose of this video was to help the physics stydents understand applications of the theory they have to learn anyway.
The Pythagoreans were studying such a subject 2,500 years ago. The name String Theory comes from them. 99%, the frets on the guitar are the cause of such studies in dividing the strings to create precise harmonics and pitch.
Thank you for posting a very interesting Video, everyone in music (of any genre) should know such things.
informative and decently easy to understand. Thank you for speaking in plain English!! Im doing a project on the basics of music and math and looking at this really helped me more than all those complicated websites and videos out there! thanks!
Thanks Starcross42. Guitar is kinda like the modern day Harp, like King David played, since it would not be cool for guys go go around playing Harps these days, and it would be kinda cumbersome to carry. Drums are the modern day timbrel!!!
whoeverposted this video is a retard 'coz that's not even close to string theory. what u showed us here is nothing more than an application of newtonian mechanics and i believe the topic is call "Standing Waves"
if u wanna know what string theory is watch any on brian greene's "Elegant Universe
Sorry to ruin your life with my video. All my students loved the video and thought the title was funny as well. You should try and lighten up a bit. You thought that I would attempt 11 dimensional math on youtube? I did a video on 3 dimensional geometry and to scared people.
And if you watched the video, it was in fact on the math of strings.
On, Brian Greene's 'Elegant Universe' is nice... but no math either.
Oh, and by the way, At what point do you decide you are in a position to call someone else a 'retard'? I watched all the videos that you posted... oh NONE! so that just makes you a kid with a keyboard. Good luck with that!
oops sorry now you look like the retard because you didn't get that they were referring to guitar strings. they put music in (). read the description.
Thx for your help last yr I am doing Physics 2 now. We are doing Oscillation (restoring force, SHM. Could you do some practice problems dealing with spring and pendulum. Also if you could do some prob with doppler. Stationary observer vs moving. Your vids are a big help 2 me the math is my weakness. Thx Dr. A.
Ah, see, the video only allows for a short video, but the technology allows YOU to stop and replay something to your heart's content. So I don't have to go slow, just be clear. I taught this technique in an earlier video.
here is some easy math.
if you double the length of a string... you move an octave lower.

vibrating strings. math. physics.
i get it. not completely, but there is something to be said for math, music, and the order of the universe all being tied together.
"naysayers" beware. the truth is out there.
thanks for the video

Is this video serious ? I'd like to see your 3 dimensional geometry one :]

The Human Response to those wavelengths is what is interesting. To one it is music, and to another it is Madness.
But, only Holy Spirit-filled-Christian music TRANSFORMS the HUMAN SPIRIT from death to eternal life. Jesus is life.

As a Holy Spirit filled Christian myself, I can assume that the music I played transfored your human spirit.

that's as lovely in teaching, as a beautiful music coming by the string theory from a nice guitar...thanks for sharing :)
