Because Cambodia was the largest kingdom in Southeast Asia they didn't need martial art unlike thai people that had alot less number and they also fought with Burmese. So thai people created Muay Boran to protect themselves and their family. It's true that thai culture is similar to Khmer's but there is no solid proofs that say Muay Thai was from Cambodia. Well Not every country in SEA likes to promote it as muy tie. That's is why there is Muay Lao, Lethwei, Kun Khmer, Tomoi etc. Some people can get too cocky about the origin and i think thats not cool. That is why I'd just like to call it SEA Boxing since they share almost the same principles and techniques.

alright i'm khmer and I train muay thai in san francisco. Stop with this muay thai is better or kun khmer is better. people train to fight and that's all that matters...i have respect for both, but here in the USA it's easier to find muay thai gyms and i happen to prefer muay thai over kun khmer.
