there are obviously plenty of works for viola solo or with piano, and plenty of chamber music, where viola is very important. And trust me, it´s certainly everythig but not boring!
@Orangananas it´s a bit different, basicaly in the approach to the music, you need to practise much more your right hand to achieve right "viola sound", violin sounds much easier...
@jkabat The viola has a lot more of a nasally sound, the biggest difference is that when you play a violin you should use your whole bow most of the time unlike viola if you do use your bow like a violin you will get obviously a violin tone, it is very confusing but after you get the hang of it, it sounds fantastic and i would never trade my viola skill for any other instrument (:
The hardest part of this movement is the opening are the first 5 notes. It sets the tone for the entire piece. Of course this is only true if you choose to shift WAY up on the G string to hit that A4. =)
You could set a metronome to this performance. The rallentandos and allargandos are written into the music. A wonderful, precise and passionatev performance!
BRAVO! i have listened to this countless number of times. Im am currently working on this piece. I have learned it takes alot of maturity and you did a fine job. Keep up the good work. Matthew - Violist
Like I said in the rest of your Videos the best Violist on youtube. There's something in your playing I have never heard in any Violist! Your interpretation is just magnificent!
congratulation man, but i noticed that you and your pianist use to make too many change to the time like rallentando, allargando etc etc...I think that this sinata don't need this kind of things. Brahms used to be really precise with time changes
This magnificent violist is also a composer: * Starling Quartet concert date: 21.6.2007 v 18:00 | place: Třebíč On the program quartets by Dvorak and Borodin and world premiere of piano quintet by J. Kabat
What a beautiful performance! Great talent!
Bravo!

@jkabat Thank you for your you answer. Is viola different from violin in the practice or a violonist can play the viola, for example ?

...although, when asked about speeds in his compositions, Brahms replied "you think I play my music the same speeds, same way every day?"
I think Brahms saw his own music as versatile enough for many different approaches, as this remark suggests.
