@ItsMeCrazyD It's suggested throughout the final season that the characters must first work through the fundamental issues they had in their lives (Jack understanding the relationship he had with his father via his relationship with David, Locke learning to just let go off all of the things he had obsessed over for so long via Helen and his surgery, Sayid accepting the kind of person he is but also the reasons why he does the things he does, etc.) before they are ready to awaken.

The plot was serviced in the island-storyline, the flash-sideways was a memoir to the audience.

It was partly responsible for why his whole life fell apart after they initially got off the island. Ben helped resolve this issue for him at the beginning of season 5.

When I first watched this scene, her answer: "No... that's not how you know me." broke my heart. And it broke my heart when I watched it the second time, after finding out what this was all about in the very end. Plus, the music adds so much to its sadness. I'm not even talking about when she said "I've missed you so much." That's beyond any sadness.

Yes, they are dead here, which is some sort of purgatory, or as Jack's dad said "a place that you all made up so that you can meet one another". When Kate said "I've missed you so much", it's obvious she lived long after Jack died, then she died too (old, that is), then their souls met in this "place", whatever you want to call it, then they all stepped together in... another life...

They experience this entire world as they die (but the key is that it is not after - reference both Juliet and Jack), and so that no matter what - they will never die alone ("live together, die alone").

Not that the details really matter. It's the same thing just with heaven being the subjective idea.
