The original was by Barbara Acklin back in the 60s - it's up on Y/T somewhere if you just search for it. it was written by her husband who was lead singer of the Chi-lites. Dusty also did a fabulous version. This is pretty good though - they've done a nice job!
Soulful Strut / Am I The Same girl has been redone so many times. Soulful Strut instrumental originally by Young Holt Unlimited, redone by George Benson, Grover Washington twice. Am I The Same Girl was done by Barbara Macklin, melissa Morgan on Marcus Miller Cd and both versions have a host of other versions. BTW, I love most of the versions that I heard. If you get a chance, listen to Grover Washington's version...it is so nice. may he Rest in peace.

You can say the same thing about Everything But the Girl. Tracey is the voice but Ben is the sound. Together, they're great and that's why we love them.
The original version was by Barbara Acklin in 1968. The instrumental, called Soulful Strut, by Young-Holt Unlimited was released at about the same time. Dusty Springfield also did a cover version.
"Am I the Same Girl" was first released in the autumn of 1968 as an instrumental track without vocals, entitled "Soulful Strut" and credited to Brunswick soul-jazz combo Young-Holt Unlimited. "Soulful Strut" became a Top 5 hit in the United States.

Yes this is a tough one to nail down! The instumental you mention is called the Soulful Strut. I think part of my own inability to find this one is that I thought it came out in the 80s with SOS other big hit: Break Out.
When I first listened to this song on MTV, I rushed into my nearest cd store and got The Best of Swing Out Sister, I never regretted that I have bought the cd, instead I can't stop listening to it
"Push your luck too far with me, but if you push it any further you won't have any left."
YOU TELL EM' CORRINE!!!
Unfortunately, because Americans don't appreciate good music these days, Swing Out Sister have chosen to concentrate their career where it is most popular, at the moment in Japan, the source of about 98% of their income...
The instrumental version from 1968 is called 'The Soulful Strut' and was done by Young-Holt Unlimited. Great song with or without words. The original version of the song was 'Am I the Same Girl' but it was recorded without the vocal and was released as 'The Soulful Strut.'
dub version in soulful strut instro tune including falsetto vocals by ex-secretary Barbara Acklin back in 1968 - i think...- but soon after there's another fantastic version by legendary Dusty Springfield only in 45', hard to find and trully xpensive, but soooo soulful!!!!
this song reminds me of a girl I kind of dated. she was what, 14 maybe, and I was 24 (lol) I kissed her one time and after that told her goodbye. years later I see her in Lincoln and she pulls over and gets out and says, ''hey Miles, am I still too young?'' she was smashing gorgeous. I hear she married a fat slob with money and let herself go, too.
I love the colors in this video, the aqua, reds, and the contrast of the Spanish people, so innovative, and also the face paint for the singer, what a "classy" singer.
i heard this as background music in a cafe scene of Prime Suspect 2 and it was driving me crazy not knowing what this song was! merci for this! :) really, why did i have to run out of itunes credit last night?!
This was a hit back in 1992...Unfortunately it was dimissed as "Adult Contemporary" while VH-1 played this video, it was clear to see that in 92', music was dominated by grunge & hip hop.
Hugh Masekela is tops!

This song is simply visually dazzling and wonderful.
It is like a beautiful overload of stlye and colour.
S.O.S is simply smart,elegant,fun,hip,and cool.
This group still puts Britney in the loser and hasbin crowd.
These new girls can't compete with S.O.S. ever so they just need to hang up their bra's and retire.
Simply think Corinne is smashing and wonderful.
