The backer board is polystyrene not drywall. The polystyrene is covered with the same fiberglass as used in Dryvit. The board is a copy of the superior WEDI brand product. Also at each joint caulking was applied along with the standard mesh tape and a clear waterproofing. ( the clear waterproofing can also be seen in the video tileman does an exterior wall) The combination of all the steps makes for a strong waterproof backing for tile. Please reference W-246-07...

However you made the correct call in that: If this had been drywall it would not have lasted. I personally don't use any gypsum based products during the installation of ceramic tile in wet or floor areas. Thank you for your comment!
Interesting. Ive never seen board like that. I was curious why you used the nails/screw with the plastic tabs. From the way you were crawling around in the mud it looked like you knew what you were doing so it didnt make sense why you had used drywall (which I now know you didnt) Im used to using kerdi. Regardless, my apologies for sounding so rude. Keep up the good work. Theres to many hacks out there. Oh and by the way, Im waiting for my new 2010 tcna handbook to come in the mail any day.
there no waterproofing membrane on the shower walls though. and it looks like just regular drywall board....which once wet, is going to break down
