@ulongkoror lol i watched a history channel on the battle of thermopylae and they said the movie 300 was quite accurate. The spartans trained since an early age, the roman children were still probably playing with toys, while spartan children trained for years and years to become the best they can. Spartans lived to fight, the romans could not better that. And just to clarify the romans were being humiliated by barbarians all the time.

@rofbum916 incorrect. the Spartans, along witho ther greeks were so weekend after looosing many battles to anouther greek city state, which at the moment the name of which escapes me, do to their redeveloping of the phalnex formation, which actully worked and this supprised the state that beat the spatans. however this state was also weakend during the wars so phillip of macadonia was able to invade quite easily. rome came later against the greek portion of A.T.G empire.

people doesnt realize that at first there where 8000 greeks. But then they saw that they where going to get trapped (because the persians came from the rear), so then they had to retreat. But if all of them retreated together, they would have been attacked, so the spartans and some thespians stayed ands held the persians back so the rest of the greeks could escape.

If it were on a plain the Persians would of flanked them with their horses and light infantry and they would of fallen in a few hours but at Thermopalye they would face them 1 by 1 which the spartans were very good at and held them off for a couple of days but they still were overrun but took a good chuck of xerxes invasion force with them screaming to hell

@Mattaboogum Shogun is already done, launches next month. Rome 2 is the one being worked on next from what i understand. Which is good, though i am a tad more partial to medieval, Rome is a very close second for me.

Yes you are right. they did prepare the rest of greece for war. Not one film ever has held back the fact that they had friends of other greek city states there!! but if you research right you will read the spartans did fight like no other and there king did not just do it for sparta but greece. plus athens did not fight on land with sparta they defeted the persian navy

Okay you are a moron, the reason why the spartan got credit was because of their last stand. When the Persians found a route to ambush the Greeks from behind, a Greek scout spotted them and told the the army about the attack. Everybody instantly ran away because they didnt want to die, except for the 300 Spartans who stayed behind, knowing they were going to die. And the Spartans played a major contribution to the war. You think 1000 farmer hoplites can withstand 1000000 unit soldiers.
All stayed except for two who were sent away with injuries! One of those ran back and was killed in the battle and the other rreturned home and was cast out for being a coward!
Like I said, the story is old, the spartans have probably made it more dramatic, to let them look more glorious...

During this time there were very very little female interraction, because they were'nt allowed to go beyond the military camps boundaries, and then not able to meet with women and therefore had to go to the other men for their sexual needs instead. No actually their ritual of marriage was during 1 night where women were prepared in their rooms and the spartan men would sneak in the room that night they would have sex and that was marriage. But the spartan government also placed men in some rooms for some reason.

Okay you are a moron, the reason why the spartan got credit was because of their last stand. When the Persians found a route to ambush the Greeks from behind, a Greek scout spotted them and told the the army about the attack. Everybody instantly ran away because they didnt want to die, except for the 300 Spartans who stayed behind, knowing they were going to die. And the Spartans played a major contribution to the war. You think 1000 farmer hoplites can withstand 1000000 unit soldiers.

everybody has it's own story and all I said is that there were Greeks aswell, who deserve credit as well (not all the credit)....
btw, I don't think all the 300 spartans stayed there and few of them ran either, or were you there when they fought and you counted them?
that war was long ago, and you know what happens when stories get old

All stayed except for two who were sent away with injuries! One of those ran back and was killed in the battle and the other rreturned home and was cast out for being a coward!

Like I said, the story is old, the spartans have probably made it more dramatic, to let them look more glorious...

Centurion. Its not exactly like that. The spartans were taken as children and brought to military camps to be trained as soldiers for about 30 years. During this time there were very very little female interraction, because they were'nt allowed to go beyond the military camps boundaries, and then not able to meet with women and therefore had to go to the other men for their sexual needs instead. Therefore it was very common with homosexuality in sparta

No actually their ritual of marriage was during 1 night where women were prepared in their rooms and the spartan men would sneak in the room that night they would have sex and that was marriage. But the spartan government also placed men in some rooms for some reason.
