Roger sang in the native language in MOST any country he toured in... he has recorded his music in many many languages... the man's talent is not anything that could ever be disputed.

I just love this man...my folks listened to him 30 years ago and now I'm listening to him on u-tube...my parents didn't kow about computers or videos but wow look how far we have come and I'm listening on here....Love you Roger!
SIMPLY ! ! ! Magnifique , Song In His NATIVE TOUNGE ( Nairobi KENYA ) Yes , White African , One of My Favorites Since first heard him Sing , in about 1977 , I Was 22 , ( Ships In The Harbor ). Lov U Roger , Your First Name , Is My Mother , MOTHER's Last Name , that would make it , "'My Fourth LAST MAIDEN NAME from my Grandma , IT IS FROM THE HEBREW , Translated to the French as Rouge or Red , Sephardic SPANIARDS " ROGER " = Hebrew ( ROSH ) meaning HEAD PRINCE ...
Roger Whittaker is a superb singer. He is a kenyan born and bred in Kenya. Together with his parents they lived in between Westlands and Kyuna in Nairobi Kenya and in fact his parents owned a bakery in Westlands - Nairobi Kenya.
Further evidence of this he has sang a song called "My land is Kenya" and another about the Old East African Railway. Confirm about these songs in Youtube and about his life, google for his biography. This song he has just sang is in Kiswahili language, spoken in E.A.
Roger is a white Kenyan. I'm a white Tanzanian. It's wonderful how he captured the spirit of Africa. Just like he felt sailing away from Kenya, I broke my heart to leave my bush-home, and sail away from Tanzania. I've never forgotten the wonderful watu, the amazing animals, the Swahili language. I'm not a musician, I didn't sing about my experience. I tried to recapture it in writing. And Roger's songs inspired me.
it is NOT Afrikaans, it's Zulu. Native language in Southern Africa (Kwazulu-Natal) He was born in Naironi in 1936. Grew up in South Africa. Studied medicine in SA at University of Cape Town, Stopped after 1 year & became a teacher.. Then moved to the UK & started singing
An Awesome Recording of Mr. Whittaker. I remember when I was a kid this song came out and very famous. Many artists did this number Roger does it best.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think Roger Whittaker is brilliant...but wonder if he was on the list of musicians who we to be sued a few years back for using this song and never taking royalties into cosideration...
The song was written by a black man in South Africa in the early 1900's and soooo many Hollywood films and musicians have used this song and never paid royalties to the family of this man...
Music is free for people to enjoy; that is why we have YouTube. But why should musicians be denied the fruits of their labor? Second, why is it that that they have to be controlled by greedy managers and promoters to want to get paid for their efforts. That insinuates that if you make music then you have no concept of the value of your worth. There is just so much wrong with this statement for as short as it is. It is sort of amazing in a brilliantly inept sort of way.
I'm pretty sure that this song would be in the public domain. Whittaker is originally a White Kenyan and has been a long-time supporter of black African causes. If he had to secure song rights to do this cover, I'm sure that he and his management would've taken care of it.
there are singers who sometimes learned only the words of the song phonetically, but he is surely very talented.he used to live in capetown south africa in his twenties
Whether or not his songs played on the radio much are of little consequence. He sold over 55 million albums. I don't think Roger has to do it for money any more.
how cool to hear this song the way it was meant to be its a pitty that it was not played on the raido but then the general populas dont ofthen appericate such telant
