  • Rogers was born one of a kind with his singing and it is just simply Beautiful. He was given a gift from God Forsure!!!

  • Wonderful music, thank you for celebrating your origin and bringing us beautiful music that fills us with nostalgia and love for motherland.

    Asante Sana:)

  • Roger Whittaker is a superb singer. He is a kenyan born and bred in Kenya. Together with his parents they lived in between Westlands and Kyuna in Nairobi Kenya and in fact his parents owned a bakery in Westlands - Nairobi Kenya.

Further evidence of this he has sang a song called "My land is Kenya" and another about the Old East African Railway. Confirm about these songs in Youtube and about his life, google for his biography. This song he has just sang is in Kiswahili language, spoken in E.A.

  • Roger is a white Kenyan. I'm a white Tanzanian. It's wonderful how he captured the spirit of Africa. Just like he felt sailing away from Kenya, I broke my heart to leave my bush-home, and sail away from Tanzania. I've never forgotten the wonderful watu, the amazing animals, the Swahili language. I'm not a musician, I didn't sing about my experience. I tried to recapture it in writing. And Roger's songs inspired me.

  • Roger Whittaker....Blue-eyed soul at its best!

  • Just wonderful

  • jsut amazing love his music

  • I heard an English verse and a Swahili verse (Huko musituni ni simba ye analala leo tu).. Let's just enjoy the music..

  • Whether Roger is Kenyan or South African can only be his choice, and he made that choice once and for all; KENYAN!

  • Soz Nairobi in Kenya (capital city)

  • it is NOT Afrikaans, it's Zulu. Native language in Southern Africa (Kwazulu-Natal) He was born in Naironi in 1936. Grew up in South Africa. Studied medicine in SA at University of Cape Town, Stopped after 1 year & became a teacher.. Then moved to the UK & started singing

  • @HenryViii2002 yikes that is SWAHILI lol

  • Afrikaans, Roger Is from South Africa.

  • He is/was Kenyan. He is also an Anglo-Kenyan and definitely not a South African.

  • @bigman1916 yikes such a liar he is was born and raised in Kenya,

  • @bigman1916 Hy is nie van Suid Afrika nie. Hy het maar net by UWK gestudeer.

Kry asseblief jou feite reg. Baie Dankie

  • @waynewrg Hoekom so kwaad? Almal weet hy is van Kenya!!

  • In which language besides english is this song sung?

  • @98jejq ...he starts by speaking in swahili, then he sings in zulu and english..

  • An Awesome Recording of Mr. Whittaker. I remember when I was a kid this song came out and very famous. Many artists did this number Roger does it best.

  • I reckon Jimmy Cliffs version is the best

  • Best version of this song that I've heard

  • Roger was born in Nairobi, Kenya on March 22, 1936, for those who were wondering.

  • Doesn't matter what language he sings in, he's still great. Thanks for sharing with us.

  • Music should be free to enjoy for everyone, those who profit from music are controlled by greedy managers and promoters.

  • Music is free for people to enjoy; that is why we have YouTube. But why should musicians be denied the fruits of their labor? Second, why is it that that they have to be controlled by greedy managers and promoters to want to get paid for their efforts. That insinuates that if you make music then you have no concept of the value of your worth. There is just so much wrong with this statement for as short as it is. It is sort of amazing in a brilliantly inept sort of way.

  • Barry..."Mkubwe"?

  • I'm pretty sure that this song would be in the public domain. Whittaker is originally a White Kenyan and has been a long-time supporter of black African causes. If he had to secure song rights to do this cover, I'm sure that he and his management would've taken care of it.

  • what a singer out on his own

  • Roger, tugendeh!!!

  • what a legend he is right up there with the best

  • i have been in love with you for sooooo long

  • Thanks FLORENCOM for posting this.

I've never heard it before, & it's great.

  • This is Roger at is best (Brilliant)

  • youre the best Roger

  • Really a great man

  • My gosh! I just learned Roger sung in German as well as English, and now what, Swahili? He was talented!

  • Roger was raised in Kenya and lived in certain parts of Africa.

  • there are singers who sometimes learned only the words of the song phonetically, but he is surely very talented.he used to live in capetown south africa in his twenties

  • Whether or not his songs played on the radio much are of little consequence. He sold over 55 million albums. I don't think Roger has to do it for money any more.

  • I heard that song on the radio (XM) from the 40's, it was titled 'Wimoweh'. I look at yard sales to find it.

    ersion

  • how cool to hear this song the way it was meant to be its a pitty that it was not played on the raido but then the general populas dont ofthen appericate such telant
