This makes me really wish my dad had opened me to piano lessons at a early age instead of 9 years old. Now 13, I'm still not that great and can barely play Rondo Alla Turca. Is this okay, or am I slacking? ): and that kids amazing!!
@N33rDow3ll1998 Lol, sorry, I don't know how to reply to this in a way that doesn't make me sound like a cocky prick! I started at 8 and at 13 I'd done my grade 8. But at the start I practised loaaaaads, every morning and every evening. I'm now 17 and I haven't kept up that level so I plateaued off a bit, but you will be fine. The fact you're still playing shows you have musical talent, so you're good. Have confidence in your skillz, I'm sure they're pretty awesome :D
At this age I think deep concentration could be mistaken for lack of joyfulness. No child can be pushed to do this unless that child has an inherent love of music. Most kids this age, when concentrating deeply, look like she does. There is joy in her playing!! I wonder why so many people think parents pushing a child is a bad thing. Really, we can never push anyone where they do not want to go.
In many ways she reminds me of me when I was young. I developed a huge facility at a young age, played big pieces. When I was 16, I went to Adele Marcus. She built from that foundation and I then learned 'how to' get that singing sound and make what I feel transcend to the listener. She opened my ears and taught me to listen and be smart, and have great range of sound. I do predict and hope this for this young and gifted musician.
"She doesn't look happy." I don't smile when I play, but playing piano (performing and practicing both) is my very favorite thing to do. Let Lang Lang smile when he plays if he wants to.
"Lang Lang sucks." Lang Lang is a good pianist. I don't agree with all his musical ideas, but I just listen to other pianists if I don't want to listen to him.
"Bad dynamic and tonal contrast and phrasing." Video cameras often destroy all of that.
...i'll give her that she is an extremely talented girl. (MUCH better than me, that's for sure) but how many times, exactly did she have to practice such a complex, not to mention repetive song?...She must be bored out of her mind...
Lang Lang is indeed a showman and so was Liszt. Lang Lang has great interpretive ability musically and so had Liszt. There is nothing wrong with being very demonstrative. If you listen to him play Schubert's Wanderer Fantasie; his impeccable Mozart and the Chopin concerti, you will see that uses great subtlety as well as awsome bravura in strategic places. Lang Lang feels the music very acutely: you can see and hear it.
@concerto35 how can you feel music 'accurately'? Isn't that a contradiction in terms? Please don't get me wrong here, but accuracy and feel don't fit together so well in my opinion...
@LuckyArchibald: Sorry Lucky/Archibald the intended word is not "accurate" but "acutely." Looking into the dictoinary it means: "marked by keen discernment or intellectual perception especially of subtle distinctions : penetrating."
She has not had the discipline to do any Hanon, Schmitt, Czerny exercises with any focussed depth of concentration. She did Hanon for a few months, some Cznery for a few months, but the Chopin etudes are musically more interesting than 5 finger exercises. Yes, she mainly does both hands together when learning new piece, but for tricky passages, she does hands alone.
This girl has good technical control, but there's not much music coming out at this point. Time to open her mind to the beauties of phrasing and shape and dynamics. I'm not a Lang Lang fan at all - he's got great technical command but his musical taste is usually circus stuff. In this vid, however, you can hear the difference between his phrases which leap and sing, and the girl's which don't go much of anywhere. There *is* a lesson here. She's young - she'll get it eventually.
Langlang is too young to be a teacher for you~ because you are also genius~~ so you need a teacher for genius. Does classical music needs to be populized?? i don't think so. Why do we need to populize Bach, mozart, etc...?
I think it needs to be popularized more for the simple reason that most concerts and recitals are poorly attended by younger generations. I've been to so many concerts and recitals where it is over half empty. There needs to be more music education and music awareness for younger generations.
Lang Lang is a showman, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. He is also a good teacher and very inspirational to lots of kids. He has done a lot to popularize classical music, which is good thing considering how badly attended most recitals and concerts are. Anyone who gives a recital knows what its like to face a half emtpy room, like no one cares. Somehow classical music needs to be revitalized.
@LarsenPiano He may indeed be a showman but that doesn't mean he has nothing to give to younger generations. As you have accurately pointed out, he spends a great deal of time teaching kids. I don't care for his showboating either but you don't get to where he is on style alone. I also give him credit for trying to raise the awareness of classical music.
This young lady is very talented. I'm looking forward to hearing more from her in the future. Please keep posting !
it doesnt make much sense to me to give the best little piano prodigy in the world a lesson with Lang Lang. After all, how much better could she get really?
Bravo to Anna. I watched another video oh her playing the winter wind etude form Chopin. In this video she is so much better. Bravo to this little child. I really hope the best for her!
@labcdaire......How is one suppose to look happy while playing? Does a smile count as being happy? Have you ever seen someone play a video game with a smile the whole time, or a baseball player standing in the batters box with a constant smile....probably not.....Anna is giving a look of concentration, like any other activity that requires it.
@oHsNaP1337 I did not pretend that one must look permanently happy while playing. I have just made a comparison between Anna Larsen's playing and others' like George Li, Aimi Kobayashi, Nobuyuki Tsujii, Yuja Wang at the same age... not to compare her with other even greater pianists on YouTube. Anna does not give the feeling that she enjoys playing the piano at all. Parents naturally like to show off their children, believing that they are worth the show. Sometimes, they are not, alas.
@labcdaire that could be true, but then when playing pieces like what she plays, It is critical to focus on dynamics, tempo, and finger techniques, so in my experience, I'd say its pretty hard to be smiling or thinking of being happy while playing pieces like this. Only professionals could do that, like search up Valentina Lisitsa playing Chopin etude op.10 no.5
@labcdaire i learned to play piano since i was 5 years old (im 19 now) and it was because i wanted to.. i never smile while playing, although it makes me really happy, i still cant figure out how i can make beautiful music come out of my fingers lol.. but yeah, everyone has it's style and you dont need to be smiling or nearly having an orgasm to show that you are enjoying what you're playing :) if she didnt like it, THAT would be showing as much as she tried to hide it, i think..
Wow, your daughter is amazing! I wish my baby daughter could play like that when she grows up :) I am a piano major myself. When did Anna start piano lesson? Keep up the good work.
Please do more dynamics. It's great that you know all the notes and everything, but some expression would help. You look talented, though. How old are you?

The more I watch her video recordings, the more I feel like she is being pushed by her parents, unlike Aimi Kobayashi at her young age for instance.
