  • @owenpeterson this actually is a parody of a temperance poem - an early example of an alcoholism PSA.

  • my dad taped this episode a long time ago and there was a tv version in my tape. and this cut off, but the fred and ward scene was there but not this.

  • In this slideshow, a little girl attempts to get her father to leave a local tavern because he hadn't come right home from work as promised and got drunk at the tavern. In the fourth picture in the slideshow, we see the clock tower, which reads 1:00 am. With mother home watching since tea and her son very sick in her arms, there can only be hope that the father comes home. The slideshow causes Minnie to cry her eyes out

  • can someone please put up the lyrics? I generally know them all, but up til Minnie's crying and Mickey talks through the song.

  • @audgiepoo1805 That part would be "And no one to help her, but me". I listened very closely to the deep voice, who happens to be the late Thurl Ravenscroft.

  • @audgiepoo1805 Lyrics in annotation form have been added.

  • I can't believe I found this song. On a lark I looked up the first song I remember playing on our hand cranked, yes it didn't use electric, phonograph and found it. This song was used by the WCTU to "encourage people not to drink.

  • can someone PLEASE upload the whole video

  • Touching! Very tounching!

  • Beautiful ;_;

How is the name of the song?

    Father, Dear, Father??

    Thanks :D!

  • Wilfred Jaxon

  • Heh, did you see some of the pictures on the bar wall? 0:20 for instance. Nothing too explicit, but that may just be because they're seen from a distance.

  • I sure did.

I guess that's one thing you'd find at any bars: explicit pictures on the walls.

  • This scene could easily be used as a PSA against Alcoholism if you don't mind my saying so.

  • The temperance movement was pretty strong in the 1890s.

  • @owenpeterson I agree. They should use this footage for a PSA against Alcoholism.

  • @tpirman1982 the slogan would be "For every ounce of alchohol that goes into your system, an ounce of your sense of responsibility leaves your system." or something like that.

  • @tpirman1982 I've done just that. Check the video response here.

  • The illustrations in the 'slide show' are based on the woodcut parodies of John Held, Junior.

  • Hahaha, "P.S. he came home!" in the last second.

  • In the original version of the song, he doesn't come home in time and Benny dies.

  • I don't recall that.

  • Was the original version of the song used in the original cut of this cartoon?

  • No.

  • MY mom wouldn't.

  • wat doya mean "your mom wouldn't?" Is she like the father in the video (hope im not being 2 personal)?

  • Oh, yes- Ben Sharpsteen's name also appears...

  • ...and not only that, 'baxter', the names of several animators appear on the curtain {Wilfred Jackson, Riley Thompson- the cartoon's director-, Les Clark...and Walt himself}.

  • Minnie reminds me of my mom during this scene. she would be just as bad if not worse.

  • What do you mean?

  • shed be bawlin her eyes out and honestly, my dad and i cant stand it.

  • Ah.

  • Do you have the whole Nifty Nineties short? I have it somewhere but I can't find it. :(

  • @katz640 It's floatin' around here on YouTube somewhere. Look around. You'll find it.

  • The father is a caricature of storyman Dick Huemer and "poor brother Benny" is a caricature of aniamtor Ham Luske.

  • I didn't know that.

  • Somebody get a lot of buckets before Minnie floods the entire audience out.

  • I love this. :) I especially like the musical harmony of the male voices. :)

  • I think Minnie should have thrown her arms around Mickey when she was crying her eyes out.

  • tpirman: But then, Mick would be weighed down by her sobbing form and he too would miss the show, hence why he tries to calm her down before were to do that.

  • Just saying as far as my opinion goes.

I mean, when my fiancee is as depressed as Minnie was, she throws her arms around me 'cause she desires comfort from me.

  • LOL "The clock in the steeple strikes one." *dong dong*

  • That's true. It's 1:00am according to the clock tower.

  • really beautiful, and those slide shows illustrations are priceless

  • I bet.

But ya' gotta have sympathy for Minnie on account that she cried her eyes out.

  • By the way, "Father, Dear, Father" is a parody of the old weepy tearjerker called "Come Home, Father"
