Just to clarify, Buffett did NOT give 30 Billion dollars to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He is going to give 30 Billion dollars worth of Berkshire Hathaway Class A shares. There IS a big difference. He also did not give it to the foundation all on that day, he is giving it in increments. Charity is someway very difficult work to get into because it simply do not have the clear routes to get into. They are talking about vaccines and medicines its really good. Every now and then I donate little bit money when I see some kind of fund raisers (in Hong Kong here people always donate money for different kind of charity, e.g. building schools in the remote area of China, helping victims suffering from natural disasters). BUT after watching this clip, it suddenly dawns on me that PHILANTHROPY is a Science- maximizing the outcome with the limited available resource;allocating the fund to the best use of it.
The funny thing is that Bill Gates has at times been criticised for unscrupulous business ethics. But i'd rather he was the sole entity in a certain field than have an oligopoly, with business owners who are far less philanthropic than he is.

Just to clarify, Buffett did NOT give 30 Billion dollars to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He is going to give 30 Billion dollars worth of Berkshire Hathaway Class A shares. There IS a big difference. He also did not give it to the foundation all on that day, he is giving it in increments. This is just another way of the Media trying to make Democrats (and Buffett is a democrat) sound like they are the greatest people in the world. Fuck democrats and everyone that is not upper class.

HUman greed is widening the gap between the poor and the rich in the US to an alarming level. Part of the US population now lives like in the third world, and that's the result of the ownership culture.
What Buffet and Bill are doing is not out of greed. They are grown up men who made their fortune and must find a way to redistribute it in the best possible way. If Gordon Gecko is your hero you've got a lot to learn and unlearn. Good luck!

You obviously misunderstood me. Sorry about that, what I meant is that the best system we have is capitalism. BUT I don't believe a pure system works because huge inequalities occur and eventually a pure capitalist system kills itself. Capitalism in my opinion should be a partnership between stakeholders with cooperation and honesty as the ultimate goal for businesses. My examples would be Wholefoods and Apple. Oprah is a talk show host... not someone who will change the world. I respect Oprah although i truly believe the only reason she backed Obama so rigorously was because of the colour of his skin and, although i believe Obama to be the best potential president, i think Oprah negatively affected his credibility in the eyes of international spectators, and has set a bad example for potential voters and young America.

I wonder if mass philanthropy runs into the same kinds of problem as a command control economy. No individual can efficiently alocate resources to the masses. The goals of the Gates Foundation are impressive -- but when hordes of money are thown at a problem it hogs up the air in the room. Only the ideas funded by the big money get addressed without the benifit of self interest driving efficiency.

Our country has a culture and economic system of amassing wealth and giving it back to society. It's not perfect, but I am VERY proud of this incredible system, not just the people.
As Michelle Obama has self-declared and clarified multiple times that she has never been VERY proud of her country, then she cannot see and feel how good it is when things in this country work really well. Such a person will not hesitate to CHANGE them and thus put the good things at risk.

I am proud of the U.S. for the atmosphere that fosters this kind of success. The people who become successful can then use the money they made when they became successful to help others who are less fortunate if they choose to, and many of them do choose to donate their money for philanthropic purposes. They actually put a lot of thought on how they will spend their money to leave a 'legacy' unlike gov't which just redistributes wealth for political gain. Did Michelle ever think of that????

Charity is someway very difficult work to get into because it simply do not have the clear routes to get into. They are talking about vaccines and medicines its really good. I think there is lot of money around but finding ways to spend it to maximise outcome is just too great. Thank you for warren buffet, Bill and Melina for thinking good about world. There are really lot of people suffering without basic drugs and basic food

Every now and then I donate little bit money when I see some kind of fund raisers (in Hong Kong here people always donate money for different kind of charity, e.g. building schools in the remote area of China, helping victims suffering from natural disasters). BUT after watching this clip, it suddenly dawns on me that PHILANTHROPY is a Science- maximizing the outcome with the limited available resource;allocating the fund to the best use of it.
