The song is brilliant as it's so simple and uplifting, but the verse lyrics are negative referencing the Vietnam war (Reagan didn't listen to the verse :-) ). Anyway, the chorus is ironic, but that still doesn't mean he is saying America is stupid - he is saying the war was stupid.

This song has been misinterpreted for so long that Bruce won't sing it live any more, or maybe it's because that period of politics is gone AND the reference is v. similar to the Iraq war, which is still occurring.
