Is this a wire cage? Hermit crabs need high humidity and heat, these things can't be maintained in a wire cage. They also need a deep layer of moist substrate in order to molt their shells. Please research and provide proper care or don't have these animals.

but seriously, you should give them a better home. They need at least 70% humidity to survive. The wire cage retains no humidity and could kill them. I have nothing to say about the painted shells. If the crab chose the shell, and the shell is no going to chip, then the shell is nothing.

thats not the actual cage you keep your crabs in is it? :( wire cages are so bad because they do not trap humidity which crabs need in order to breathe. Also there is no visible sand for them to bury themselves in when they need to molt, and painted shells are so bad!! You should get some natural shells for them to change into :) paint is toxic and if they eat it, it can kill them. Plus it blocks the pores in their shells which regulate temp and humidity

The paint can be toxic to them. I have read stories and witnessed first hand where the paint would bubble up and start to chip. The crabs would eat the paint chips and poison them. Also sometimes the crabs can be treated inhumanly when being put into the shells. This second thing is not always the case, but has been known to happen.

Okay so all these people who say they "actually take care of their crabs" are like change to sand!! Gravel is terrible!! I don't get it! I believe that the pet stores and places who sell hemit crabs wouldn't sell gravel if it's bad for the crab. Plus I pay for my crabs things and I don't have 4 bucks for every tiny bag of sand. When I went to buy my crabs I went to 2 different places and both had pretty nothing but gravel. One had 1 or 2 teeny bags of sand for 4 bucks each. I really just dont

@speedstacker51 My pet store ONLY sells sand as hermit crab substrate. They are absolutely against using anything else and you can go to a hardware or landscaping store and buy 20kg bags of sand for ten bucks. Mine always lasts two changes (once every 4 months or so).

What kills them is the shippers and preparers literally RIP them out of their shells and stuff them into the painted ones. Hermit crabs have been known to tear their own limbs off for being exposed forcefully from their shells.

change the substrate, NOW!! They cannot burrow in gravel and will lead to stressed crabs. Stressed crabs=R.I.P. Use either sand, coconut fiber (Eco-Earth, Bed-a-Beast), or both. Make sure that the depth of the substrate is at least twice the height of your biggest crab.

They paint the shells for money. the paint does chip because i had one that was GLOSSED and it still chiped so when the hermit changed i took it out. when they go in to their water the paint has chemicals that goes in to the water and you cant see it. the paint IS NOT SAFE BECAUSE IT IS NOT MADE OUT OF FRUITS!!! there is paint that is safe for us but NOT FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY ARENT PEOPLE i have more to say but not enough room

I'm sorry if I sound like a nag but here goes:1. Get a glass tank please... Wire Cages don't hold the humidity or tempreture Hermies need. A 10 Gallon tank can be bought for $16 at walmart.

2. Use sand instead Gravel is fare to abrasive and they can't tunnel in it like they can in moist sand, and they need to tunnel to molt.

3. Like everyone else said please remove the painted shells, the paint is toxic for hermit crabs ( even if it says nontoxic that only applies to you not the crabs)
