I have a question, I have a budgie and he is still a young budgie(3/4 months) he is quite tame, but i think since he kept seeing him self in the mirror, he is starting to think that there is another budgie. Because when he's in his cage, he often goes like really happy, moves his head up and down and make happy noises, and he does that to object in his cage. And i'm kind of worried about that, What should I do? Could I stop this?
well it appears that i have done everything wrong .... not long after i got home with my budgie i grabed him and took him out to sit next to me on the couch and i've sort of got him to step up but he doesnt really like my hand, he's fine just sitting on two fingers as long as they're no higher than 2cm off the ground but any higher and he will try to fly away. he also attacks me alot :/
I also spend A LOT of time with them. like 6 hrs a day. they sit on there playground and i do stuff. Pebbles I have a wk now. he runs over to me, loves to sit on my shoulder. I feed them out of my hand 2-3 x a day. My bird Niv watches me and chirps to me to get him out of the cage. They trust me big time. Niv is kinda quite didnt even chirp unless he heard chipring the first week. Pebs is very young and full of energy.
Pebbles i got exactly a wk today and he flys to me and sits on my shoulder. Niv i got 2 weeks ago and he does the same thing. He actually chirps for me to come get him out of the cage. Yes every bird needs it own thing but this is making a BIG deal out of something that doesnt need to be. I just took him out and let him bit me the 1st day. wrong yes but by the end of the first day both of them were finger trained
hi, i have a budgie for about one year and i didnt train him becouse i dint have time. but now i would like to train him but he doesnt want to came near me.HELP!!!
this is over complicating it. I just got my boy 2 days ago and he already sits on my finger and is working on my shoulder. i got another one 2 weeks ago and he does the same thing and did step up by day 4. seriously get real...
@kenpochic1980 You have either a very scared bird or a very trusting one. It typically depends on the enviorments of the budgies before they come into your care or even the care of the pet store. Every bird is different, I have one who is similar to the one you've described, but I have another one who needs this method. This is a very good method and I've used it on all of my birds.
i tried a bunch of trust exercises before my budgie was ready; i forced my budgie out of the cage and she ran away on the floor so i eventually had to grab her to bring her back, this happend a few times, so obviously she's still terrified of me. What do i do? How do i get her to trust me?
@MovieNature65 just spend time with her. With one of my birds, Eden, I put her cage next to my computer where I spend a lot of time and just talk to her every now and then. I also read to her in the mornings and evenings for about 20-25 minutes. A lot of the time it isn't any kind of physical contact in the beginning, it's just spending time near your bird. Soon, she'll be easier to work with, but make sure you move slow and if you feel yourself getting impatient STOP and take a break.
i never lock my budgies in the cage, they got a big 2m perch in the room to hang out on. had them for around 6 months and there still scared of me as if im some t-rex.
@ali84uk probably because they have no "safe haven". Their cage is their place to really be safe and secure, if your entire room is their "safe place" then you're invading it every time you go in there and that's why they are scared. Try to get them a cage and several days to adjust to it, then start using this method for training. To get them into the cage you'll probably have to use a net or a towel, just don't grab them with your bare hand. It'll scare them even more!
@WonderlandAudiobooks thanks for the reply, they actually do have a cage and love spending time in there. I always leave it open for them to fly in and out of. I never try to force them into it or try grabbing them. I think it might be my appearance which scares them lol.
@Yasmin241996 This can be tricky. A lot of the time, the best method is to cover up any spots that could get them in trouble, leave the room, and let them find their way back in. No matter what you do, don't grab them with your bare hands. Use a towel, if you must. My girl got stuck under the bed one time and I had to sleep on the couch. She was back in her cage after I got home from work the next day.
@klevdud Yes, get two. I made the mistake of getting one and she was so lonely that I ended up buying another one. They are much happier now together and have constant companionship :).

@jazzi770 He's probably just a little scared because you let him out so soon. To budgies, the world is a scary place and before that even their cage is for the first 3-5 days. As far as not letting you knew him, again he's probably just scared. Take your time and be patient and repeat the steps above. If he flies away, don't react, he'll come eventually. @prettyprinces1 1) That's probably because she is distrustful of people. But don't worry, hope is not lost! With budgies like this the best thing to do is to be EXTREMELY slow with them (slower than normal). Before sticking your hand in the cage, talk calmly to her and watch her for a while. Then, open the door ad put your hand at the opening. Watch her behavior.Does she seem angry (puffed up, tail flaring), scared or energetic? You may have to only do this part for several training sessions before

2) several training sessions before she is comfortable. Work with her 2-3 times a day for 10 minutes and move VERY slowly. Talk to her calmly and only move/do anything when she's comfortable. You need to let her know that you aren't going to hurt her. NEVER grab or force her to do anything as this may permanently mentally damage your bird. Also, maybe you should move her to a quieter area in the house for a while without much human traffic and turn on classical music while you're away.
3) this may calm her nerves. One last tip, make sure only ONE person is working with her through this. That way she learns to trust one human and will more easily trust another. If everything fails, contact the breeder or store and ask about how they care for their parakeets. Try to do the same things as long as they fall within these guidelines. Remember, she may also just be aggressive by nature :).
My budgies seem to me scared when I put my hand in the cage .I tried to train them so they are not scared and I also tried to make the go on my finger but it is still not working .What should I do?
I have mine for 2-3 years now and he is still afraid of me and anyone else! The only thing he likes is his bells and going out of his cage...and when he goes out he just stays in one spot...and when he is in the cage he is in one spot too...but the weird thing is that when I eat at the table he eats too!At the same time,so he knows that i am actually eating...but i do not get why he is scared so much....
Hey .. Thx for the tips , but i got some problems over Here--
Look I have 2 budgies , they fight... ALOOT !! So i seperated them , after seperating them they started SCREAMING , really loudly .. maybe to call eachother or something, but when i put them back they start fighting again. Now I started to put my finger in the cage, just for about a minute in do this about 7 times a day , is this a good way ? I dont think my budgies will ever trust me, for what i did . So is that okay or wut ?
@paulaxa1 That's not you, that's the big scary world! He's just frightened of all the new things around him. Continue taking him out regularly and eventually he'll calm down and explore. It's good that he trusts you enough to take him out though!
@WonderlandAudiobooks thanks ... 2 months ago i was taking him out of the cage every day and he became wildier... now i take him out only sundays and sutardays
@paulaxa1 hmmm well this isn't really healthy for budgies, they need to be out at least an hour a day (some people say 30 minutes, but to me that's just way too short). I'm not really sure how you can calm him down other than rewarding him with praise and millet when he is calm. Budgies are smart and will catch on quick :). Also, it may just be him being... well, a budgie. They like to explore/nest in your hair/fly around. Worst comes to worse, get a one time wing clip until he calms down.
@WonderlandAudiobooks ooh ok i just thought their getting wildier if u let them out a lot... but ok if u say so i will :) whete i let them free they fly aaand doing thing ant then they go alone in their cage :P thats so sweet
mine figure out how to open the door of his cage from the first day.. so tape it, now (4 days later) he is still and i think he made some crackles on he's beak
(this will only work if thee budgie is on its own) i know a guy who reckons if you clip a budgies wings and force it out of its cage it will be allot easier to tame, and that he can tame it in 30 seconds. he says in its head it will only see you as its friend or enemy, and so if you show it your not its enemy then you must be its freind.
@moviefans100 leave it in it's cage for a day or so and see if he eats it. if he isnt leave it in for as long as it takes, it could take awhile for him to knw it.
I know you get a lot of comments asking for help, and I hope I'm not just bugging you by asking you this.
I've had a budgie for nearly three weeks now. It seems to have gotten used to my hand, but it doesn't trust me enough to climb on. Instead, it keeps on nibbling and biting on my hand, which is actually quite painful. It nearly tore a scab off my finger. Is this normal, and is the budgie just exploring my fingers or should I try and stop it?
I've had my budgie for about 3 months and I am starting to train on..it is a male budgie. It will not work together..I just make the slightest movement like if im pressing too hard on my keyboard then it becomes crazy and fly around! is this normal? I've tried to give food with my hand (ordinary food), and sometimes succeed in actually getting it up on my hand but it is as if he holds himself back a little ..?please, help me!

@fullmetalbitch hey something bad hapennedT^T i wanted to transfer my budgie into another cage but it took my so long to do it that my dad juz came in and TRIED TO CATCH THE BUDGIE he then slips and PULEED MY BUDGIE TAILS OFF .Will it ever grow back?i cried as if i was the one who lost the tail. After a few i hours i return to the old cage and now the bird who once was able to put one leg on my hand flew arond the catch like a maniacT^T pls help me!!!!!!!!!
unfortunetly the only way to train is to be patient.. a month is nothing it could easely take up to 3 tot 6 months to train them.. especially if something went wrong in the beginning
@vlogJVM if hes not trying to tear your finger off then its a good start. u should try not to yell at him becuz i did that and my budgie hated me for a long time whenever i put my hand in the cage his beak would make marks in it. just be paitent
@vlogJVM One reason why you may be having trouble is because you're forcing him too much. If you force them, they'll only be scared and if you continue to do so, it may be permanent. With parakeets who have been grabbed/got out before they were supposed to, training and trust takes a LOT longer. This happened to my girl and she had trouble eating for the first week. Just be patient and repeat the steps and understand that you have to rebuild trust that you've lost.
@vlogJVM I have a little budgie like this and I solved her "shy" attitude by buying another budgie that was the EXACT opposite of her (loud, adventurous, crazy, and outgoing). He got on my finger within a week of having him and she is getting closer than she's ever been to getting on my hand. If you do get a new budgie, just make sure to quarantine and that they like each other! My two babies are inseparable now :).
Excellent. Worth adding how important a ladder is in the cage . When you first let budgie out they fly to a high vantage point and stay there too scared to move. To get them back in cage don't try to grab them, use the ladder. They will recognise it and hop on. Helps build up trust and soon they will find their own way back. Eventually they will hop on your finger instead and then you're home and dry.! Be patient, Once you win that trust budgies are the most affectionate pets you will ever own!
@fullmetalbitch i have a budgie and i cant wait for 3 or 6 months to train him coz i have school etc. but now summer is coming so i will train him now :)
I do everything deeply nice, Calm exactly how you did it, but my budgie still is scared of me!!! Please reply! Plus, can we use different foods like seeds, lettuce.. etc to train them???
i have quite a few birds, but only one handrared, and i luv her, i had two budgies but one died, so i took the parnter in the house, he follows my cockatiel around constantly and she seems a bit peeved lol
he has followed her to my shoulder and head, i can sometimes pick him up and he doesnt seem to bad, i want him more tame
i will get him company, but if i get a handrared budgie will he tame quicker seeing both other birds coming to me?
btw how much do you suppose a handrared budgie is?
Thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for months i wanted to find a cure for my lazy budgies and and and you gave it to me
hi i have 2 budgies i brought them yesturdai there babies should i let them out of there cage when there use to me? im trying to tame then soon when they settle down going to do what you did in this video hoping it works=]
ok i have 1 budgie and he cant fly and we always keep the cage open and he never leaves or anything we have millet but he ignores it dossent like watter he used to just hop on my finger but now he dossent he runs awey how do i train him!
I am trying to hand tame my budgie, and it goes onto my finger, but it need millet, and bites before getting on.When its finished, goes back to its perch, how could I keep it on my finger without millet?
I have followed your guide and i can get 1 of my budgies on my fingre but when i put my hand in the cage it runs away from my hand. But, it still gets on my finger please some advice. Could it be to do with i have 2 and the other 1 doesnt like my hand??
why does my budgie keep biting me? everytime i try to tell him to step up and i bring my finger to him, he just bites me? how do i get him to stop doing that?
Anyways, I have a total of two budgies, they seem to moderately tolerate me, yet they won't remain on my finger for more than they have to. Is there really any trick to getting a pair of budgies to grow more attached to you? Or is it just plain too difficult to attempt when you have more than one? They are a male and female pair and seem to adore each other, they literally freak out when separated.
@Tarektioban play with them, try learning them tricks.. so they need to earn the jummy goods.. my favorite: try making them turn upside down on your feinger... it keeps them interested and improvs your bond
what if right away my bird ran from my hand.. i put it back in and it let me pet it.. i talked to it for about an hour and was petting it.. then i practiced step up.. now after 3 hours of owning young yoshi whenever i say step up and i put my finger just on his legs he steps up.. i was wondering if there is any way to improve step up so i dont have to touch him at all for him to jump on my finger?
@0wn4g3g4m3r you probably scared the crap out of him... if budgies listen to you without a few minutes or hour.. hes probably scared stiff and listens to you because hes afraid not to listen... leave hem alone for atleast a day! just talk
well now its a day after and when i slowly put my hand in her cage i can still do step up.. but the only thing is.. when i try to feed her millet or fresh veggies she never goes for it.. and i never see her eating her food.. what should i do?
your scaring him.. throw some food over the ground they tend to eat better when its on the ground.. but seriously.. leave him alone until he eats! if he doesnt eat in 48 hours hell might die..
ya weell mine is eating the heck out of its food right now and they are tweeting and whistling ..... i just got them yesterday and they are doing awesome ...they dont eat the millett but they did once .... i just held it up and he ate one bit and thats all so far but they LOOVVEEE to "kiss" each other .....i just need some advice on getting them to trust you
Thanx sooooo much!! They must have some trust left in me after a year and a half! I tried it today (3rd time!) and it took a while but they came and ate the millit!!!! Then my dad came in the room and started talking really loudly so they flew away. :(
I need URGENT help! I've had my budgies for 2 years in June and I just can't get them to like me! Even if I manage to get them to sit on a piece of cloth to take them out to play, they HATE me!
Cool vid though, this might actually help me! Addes to faves and 5 star!
hi, go to the forum listed i the end... talkbudgies
theres always somene online.. and explaining how to tame birds like yours takes some more words then here.. this because you probably already lost their trust a couple of times
2 weeks and male trusts you without millet.. thats great progress :) taming 3 is a bit harder then taming 1.. did you leave millet in there for a few weeks?? hanging it on diffrent places? sometimes it takes a while for them to discover it.
nope i never left millet some how i taught the male in a day but the females are goon wild just put the pen near the male and he steps up i dont even have to say up i need tips on rhe females they r afraid
if youv never left millet you dont know if they like it or not. try hanging millet in for a month. it will be a great tool to tame the females. in the mean while. give a lot of attantion to the male making the females "jealous" ofcourse still try to tame the girls.
ok il try that but i left a millit in the cage but the male ate all of it im confused when i get my male budgie to stand on the stick (taming) i try to take him out but he just flys back in the cage
Hi, gr8 video. i'll try it on my newly bought budgies, giving them some time to settle down right now. dear, could yu pls tell meh how to get them bak in d4 cage once dey come out to play? thank you =D
you got one angry budgie there... you went towards him or he came to you? if he came tou you blow him if he bites real hard.. if you came to him.. its probably your own fault. take a step back and let him come to you
there are more reasons for budgies to bite.. they also bite to show you who's boss.. though i agree blowing isnt best method. but its better then hitting him when biting real hard. but budgies bite for more reasons then just defence.. if the owner went to the budgie its his fault.. but the other way around its possible he's simply trying to be boss. and thats behavior that is not allowed.
lolz thanks i trained mine in 1 week and got it saying the words cool and hello. plus she loves watching familyguy i leave the cage door open and she comes out and watches it with me lolz parakeets name is kite thx for the video!

You may have to only do this part for several training sessions before
WonderlandAudiobooks 5 months ago
2) several training sessions before she is comfortable. Work with her 2-3 times a day for 10 minutes and move VERY slowly. Talk to her calmly and only move/do anything when she's comfortable. You need to let her know that you aren't going to hurt her. NEVER grab or force her to do anything as this may permanently mentally damage your bird. Also, maybe you should move her to a quieter area in the house for a while without much human traffic and turn on classical music while you're away.
WonderlandAudiobooks 5 months ago
3) this may calm her nerves. One last tip, make sure only ONE person is working with her through this. That way she learns to trust one human and will more easily trust another. If everything fails, contact the breeder or store and ask about how they care for their parakeets. Try to do the same things as long as they fall within these guidelines. Remember, she may also just be aggressive by nature :).

My budgies seem to me scared when I put my hand in the cage .I tried to train them so they are not scared and I also tried to make the go on my finger but it is still not working .What should I do?
MrKryst13 8 months ago
I have mine for 2-3 years now and he is still afraid of me and anyone else! The only thing he likes is his bells and going out of his cage...and when he goes out he just stays in one spot...and when he is in the cage he is in one spot too...but the weird thing is that when I eat at the table he eats too!At the same time,so he knows that i am actually eating...but i do not get why he is scared so much....

what if my budgie is too scared and is not even interested in my millet? :/

So is that okay or wut ?

my budgie when he is in the cage he step up on my finger... but when i put him out of the cage, he is afraid of me.. any tips?
paulaxa1 9 months ago
@paulaxa1 That's not you, that's the big scary world! He's just frightened of all the new things around him. Continue taking him out regularly and eventually he'll calm down and explore. It's good that he trusts you enough to take him out though!
WonderlandAudiobooks 5 months ago
@WonderlandAudiobooks thanks ... 2 months ago i was taking him out of the cage every day and he became wildier... now i take him out only sundays and sutardays
paulaxa1 5 months ago
@paulaxa1 hmmm well this isn't really healthy for budgies, they need to be out at least an hour a day (some people say 30 minutes, but to me that's just way too short). I'm not really sure how you can calm him down other than rewarding him with praise and millet when he is calm. Budgies are smart and will catch on quick :). Also, it may just be him being... well, a budgie. They like to explore/nest in your hair/fly around. Worst comes to worse, get a one time wing clip until he calms down.
WonderlandAudiobooks 5 months ago
@WonderlandAudiobooks ooh ok i just thought their getting wildier if u let them out a lot... but ok if u say so i will :) whete i let them free they fly aaand doing thing ant then they go alone in their cage :P thats so sweet

that's just horrible... he will not see you as a friend because you force him to do stufff...
i know this from experience: once the budgie DOES learn how to fly because you stop clipping, it will turn away from you.
He doesn't get tame from clipping, he just has to listen because he's scared of what will happen otherwise. i wish i could delete your post
Grasparkietjes 9 months ago
(this will only work if thee budgie is on its own) i know a guy who reckons if you clip a budgies wings and force it out of its cage it will be allot easier to tame, and that he can tame it in 30 seconds. he says in its head it will only see you as its friend or enemy, and so if you show it your not its enemy then you must be its freind.

Is this normal, and is the budgie just exploring my fingers or should I try and stop it?

i have had a budgie for atleast a month now.
i have been trying to force train him ,
and use the step up on a perch trick .
he got out of the cage tonight and i grabbed him
should i give him a few days to rest and try again?
because it's hard to be patient considering all he does is stare at me!
:( needing some help please!
vlogJVM 1 year ago
@vlogJVM give him some rest and start over....
unfortunetly the only way to train is to be patient.. a month is nothing it could easely take up to 3 tot 6 months to train them.. especially if something went wrong in the beginning
fullmetalbitch 1 year ago
@vlogJVM if hes not trying to tear your finger off then its a good start. u should try not to yell at him becuz i did that and my budgie hated me for a long time whenever i put my hand in the cage his beak would make marks in it. just be paitent
246bored 8 months ago
@vlogJVM One reason why you may be having trouble is because you're forcing him too much. If you force them, they'll only be scared and if you continue to do so, it may be permanent. With parakeets who have been grabbed/got out before they were supposed to, training and trust takes a LOT longer. This happened to my girl and she had trouble eating for the first week. Just be patient and repeat the steps and understand that you have to rebuild trust that you've lost.
WonderlandAudiobooks 5 months ago
@vlogJVM I have a little budgie like this and I solved her "shy" attitude by buying another budgie that was the EXACT opposite of her (loud, adventurous, crazy, and outgoing). He got on my finger within a week of having him and she is getting closer than she's ever been to getting on my hand. If you do get a new budgie, just make sure to quarantine and that they like each other! My two babies are inseparable now :).
WonderlandAudiobooks 3 months ago

ComFARTable... lol.

@0wn4g3g4m3r stop putting your hand in the cage!
first he needs to eat.. then you can train..
your scaring him.. throw some food over the ground they tend to eat better when its on the ground.. but seriously.. leave him alone until he eats! if he doesnt eat in 48 hours hell might die..

if youv never left millet you dont know if they like it or not. try hanging millet in for a month. it will be a great tool to tame the females. in the mean while. give a lot of attantion to the male making the females "jealous" ofcourse still try to tame the girls.

you got one angry budgie there... you went towards him or he came to you? if he came tou you blow him if he bites real hard.. if you came to him.. its probably your own fault. take a step back and let him come to you
fullmetalbitch 2 years ago
Everything else you got right, but never blow to your budgie! It's humans own fault, when bird comes to the final own defensive: biting.
Gretarina 2 years ago
there are more reasons for budgies to bite.. they also bite to show you who's boss.. though i agree blowing isnt best method. but its better then hitting him when biting real hard. but budgies bite for more reasons then just defence.. if the owner went to the budgie its his fault.. but the other way around its possible he's simply trying to be boss. and thats behavior that is not allowed.
